Crib Climbing, Big Boy Bed?

We have a great Crib and we love it, but my son keeps trying to climb out. He can't, because we got a climb-proof crib, but he has skinny little legs that keep getting caught between the slats when he plays before and after nap and bedtime. I don't want him to get hurt.

I'm torn as to whether or not we should get a crib tent thing, or try a big boy bed. He's only two, but I know a big boy bed isn't that far off, and we already have one from his grandma. How old should a kid be when s/he moves into a big boy bed?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We're going to make the transition!!! My husband is making a nice 'frame' for the bed that will go around the three sides and be cushioned so be doesn't roll off (sort of an extended headboard), and I bought the inflatable bolster instead of a rail from one step ahead.

We will be in our big boy bed by Christmas! Thank you!

Hi!
It sounds like he is ready to make the move to a big boy bed! It is not too early--my son moved at 16 months to make room for the new baby! He transitioned just fine and never even tried to climb out! I set it up first and let him get in and out and try it for a day or two and then he asked to sleep in it and that was it! Not hard at all!!

Good luck!

I would try the regular bed but keep the crib up just in case it doesn't work. I have had more then one daycare family lose MONTHS of sleep cause of taking down the crib.

We had toddler beds--2 were given to us so we went ahead and bought a third--when my first born were 2. The transition was pretty simple. He may need a little "coaching" at first so that he stays in bed when it is bedtime but he sounds like he it totally ready.

After never being witnessed even lifting a leg to climb out of her crib, my daughter climbed over the top rail and fell on a well carpeted floor breaking her arm three weeks before her third birthday. I'm a bit of a spaz myself and always concerned about the right thing to do. I would have much rather dealt with a big girl bed than holding her in my arms while she had her arm reset. She's now almost six and luckily doesn't remember any of it except knowing that she broke it.

I think it all depends on your comfort level of your child being free to roam his room. My son was 3 when we transitioned him and it was perfect. My daughter is 20 months and I wouldn't consider putting her in a bed yet. We will probably wait till she is three also. My son could climb in and out of his crib, did it once, fell out and cried and then learned how to do it safely. BUT never did. I think it all depends on the child and your comfort level. But I wouldn't rush it.

We put our son in a big boy bed at 16 months, right after he climbed up/fell out of his crib for the first time. Thank goodness he wasn't seriously hurt! Forget the crib tent. All my mom friends with boys told me that they don't work and are very expensive. Our son was fine in his big boy bed and got used to right away
