Crib Mattress - Forest Hills,NY

IKEA has a wide selection of foam and spring crib mattresses for less than $100. I can't remember if they do a natural latex one, but they take many steps to ensure that they are safe for babies and chilren.

We got the Naturepedic Organic mattress (252 coils) and love it. It's pricey, though we got it on a great sale. I've always heard that mattresses contain some pretty toxic stuff even for adults, so I felt better about getting an organic one for the baby, but I'm sure a conventional one would be fine if you want to keep the budget down.

There's a soy foam core mattress I found at Walmart too, and it's pretty natural, very firm, and much cheaper than the organic coil mattresses. I've heard good things about foam mattresses in terms of firmness for newborns.

In general, I have heard good things about Colgate, Serta and Sealy mattresses. If you get a coil mattress, just make sure you get the highest coil count you can -- 150 is minimum, but 250 is better.

I work at a baby store. Don't waste your time/money on organic. Unless you are going to get Organic sheets, bedding, mattress pad, etc. then there is no point. Colgate is a really popular brand. Foam is hypo-allergenic and lightweight. Coil is fine, its just heavier.

If at all possible, try to get a Naturepedic Organic! They are the best! I didn't know about all the info out there on how the toxic gasses from mattresses could be causing SIDS until I was preg with my 2nd daughter. I think you can get a pretty good Naturepedic one online for around $200. If thats too much, try getting a used one on craigslist.

organic. Babi spend many hours on their mattresses, you don't want off gasses being emitted into the air so close to their faces.

We went for the organic mattress. My feeling was they spend so many hours a days lying on it that it was a worthy investment. Yes, expensive, but you have to pick and choose when it comes to the baby items and the budget. I think mattress and stroller will be worth it since they get the most use. We did naturepedic brand.

I did the same Naturepedic? Organic mattress and love it. I think it's worth it if you get a convertible bed or a bed for later that can use the same mattress when you transition. Then it's worth the cost. The other mattresses smelled horribly of chemicals. Definitely firmest. Everyone has preferences though, so don't worry if you choose otherwise.

Ok you can get any that you like as long as it's firm. The frimmer the better. If you go with an innerspring one make sure it has at least 150 coils to provide a good firm support (I used to work at babies r us and that is what we would tell our guests)
Foam is ok. That is what my son is on but I plan on getting him a new one since the cover is peeling (my sister bought super cheap and I had to use her crib and mattress). Most baby/toddler mattresses are going to have a vinyl cover so you wont have to worry about it, but I like to put a quilted cover down under the sheet to make it softer and comfy. He just doesn't seem very comfortable on the foam mattress.
Organic is nice if you really are worried about chemicals and stuff. I don't think I will go organic just because they are so expensive, but they do make organic covers and sheets.
