Hi, Got to a local Vacuum Store and get some demonstrations. I have had a Sanitaire upright for over 20 years. It has a hepabag (permanenet) and a cup to empty. I use a small canister for the attachment work. The cord is extra long and I am always amazed at what I see in the cup.

I had a year of terriable allergies. I finally broke down and bought a Dyson and I haven't used any of my 3 allergery medicines since. Kirby or Rainbow might have done the trick to, but I swear by Dyson. I have the purple Animal one, sorry I don't know the model number.

My mother in law has a Kirby. It is extremelly HEAVY. A good vacuum but she said she wouldn't get one again because it is so heavy to push. I can't say one bad thing about the Rainbow. We personally didn't choose the Dyson for our second vacuum because I thought it was too tedious to hook up the hand attachments. That is just my opinion though. Other than that I thought it was a nice vacuum. Best of luck. Pam

I have had a Kirby for about 10 years. It works great and has bags that are sealed tight to prevent dust from getting out. I have really bad allergies also, so this was important to me. Rainbow has too many parts and is too much trouble to clean. I do not know about Dysem? but I think Kirby is really durable and you will not need to replace for at least 20 years. It is also easy to use, even with one hand. Kirby and Rainbow will come to your house to give demonstration. Make sure you see both demos before you choose.

During my brief stint as a Kirby salesgirl, I absolutely swear by them! At the time I was selling the G4 model and I met people who had had their Kirby's for 15 or 20 years. They have a great warranty and you can always trade in your old one for a new one. The G4 not only vacuumed, but the head comes off and cleans six inches deep into your mattress (you'd be disgusted if you knew what you were sleeping on!). There was also an attachment to clean your drapes, buff your kitchen floors, and shampoo the carpet. I know it may sound overwhelming, but it is easy to use and lightweight. I've never found a better carpet cleaner than the Kirby shampoo. And the Kirby has the HEPA filtration system which removes 99.9% of dust and pollen from your carpet. It's an amazing machine. The vacuum has the sucking capacity to reach the padding of your carpet and pulls the dirt to the surface so you're getting a thorough cleaning. I would never recommend another brand. Good luck!

My next vacuum will be a Rainbow - my mom had one when we were growing up, and has had a Kenmore and Miele since (I know, not a Curby or Dyson), and she pulled the Rainbow out when my husband and daughter lived w/ her because he has allergies.

Unless your husband is doing all the vacumming, he should let you decide which to get. They all have good features. If you get a Kirby, it probably should be the one that is self propelled since it is so heavy.
Everyone has their own preferences though.

Go to a local vacuum shop and talk to them. Do your research and take prices to them. While their prices may be a bit higher (you are paying for the expertise), it may be worth it to get a vacuum there itself. Or gather info and then decide.

I have a Dyson and a child with dust allergies. I like my Dyson... so far.

Dyson!

I love my Dyson. I have asthma and deep shag carpet with two indoor dogs. Until I got my Dyson, my carpets would get matted in high traffic areas. After the first use of the Dyson, my carpet started looking new again. The dirt that came out of it was incredible!!! I have the pet Dyson which has the ability to use cleaning solution. I haven't had to use that yet, but it's an option.

Good luck on your selection.
