Curly Haircut...

My hair is really thick, and really curly. I get corkscrews, along with waves. (Drives me nuts! lol.) I am able to control most of the frizz with products, and it does look nice... but I have SOOO much of it!!! It goes down to the small of my back right now, and I almost always wear it french braided back. If I'm feeling crazy I might put it in a pony tail. I want to cut it short... but I'm kinda scared of winding up with an afro. lol. It would be nice if it was short enough to straighten (right now it takes me 1.5-3 hours to straighten it... so it's very rare...) I guess my questions are: If you have really curly hair, have you ever cut it short? Did the weight coming off make it easier or harder to do? Did you get the dreaded afro? What is the best 'style' when cut short? Usually I don't go shorter than shoulder-length, and then it's layered. I'm thinking chin this time... or maybe keep just enough that I will still be able to get it into a stubby pony tail. :) lol.

Never, never layer curly hair - it makes it more poofy. There is a haircut called Ouidad for curly hair. There are limited hairstylist that do this cut, you will need to search for a certified salon. It really cut down on the A-frame poofiness I had. Do not purchase the products however, there are several much cheaper products that work great.

I have thick curly hair. I have my stylist remove a lot of weight with layers. Instead of straightening it pin straight, I use a skinny curved edge straightener to put one smooth curl in. It works well with my curly hair. I will never go short! I'm afraid my hair would stick straight out from the thickness!

I have curly hair and have had it both very short and very long. My advice is to gradually go shorter and see how you like it rather than making the drastic change from the small of your back to your chin. Maybe get it cut to where it hits your bra line the first time and get some nice layers in it (not choppy layers that will lay weird, just some light layering through the last couple inches so you don't get the triangle-look). Then the next time you get it cut, go a little shorter if you want. The texture of your hair and the way it lays may change as you cut it, so be cautious. You will not be able to just go with a blunt cut, it will always need layers if it's short.

Go to a good stylist and they can help you with what is "in" and they can even dip into it and lessen the weight of it and the thickness. You can also consider the new straightener, it is like a perm but the opposite...it is the new thing now, there is one called a Keratin straightener that they apply and it should last at least 6 months. If changing styles, I would splurge and go to a high end stylist that goes and gets trained annually.

I have lots and lots of fine curly hair. Its not coarse, its smooth and its very shiny and healthy. I have ringlets and I have frizz. I have some parts that will go stick straight and other parts that are such tight curls you'd swear I used a curling iron on them!

i've had short hair, like a stacked bob and it works great with curly hair. My hair gets a bigger curl the shorter it is. Right now its mid back and the curls are tiny and tight. If I cut it to my shoulders I'd have big ringlets like Nellie olsen.

I always have my hair layered. If I don't, its a pyriamid and looks ridiculous. So long layers for me that frame my face and around the back to keep the bulk from making it look heyooge.

You rknow your hair best. Look through websites like www.naturallycurly.com for idea's. The nfind a good stylist.

K i don't have curly hair but my Mom does so first of all NO layers! That will make it fuller and look more out of control. I think you should go to a salon before making an appointment and talk with some of the girls there. Let them take a look at your hair and give you advise and opinions then schedule with whoever thinks they can take on the challenge :) I would think the will probably tell you to cut it shorter but not too short so you don't get the afro. Like maybe shoulder length and thin it out...a lot. I know they can also do reverse perms so that could be an idea too.

I feel your pain. I just in the past few years figured out how to deal with my hair. I have it cut to just below my shoulders. I have it parted diagonally so one side does not hang too heavily since it is so thick. I also have the portion around my face angled in layers to thin it out. I use Redken products which I swear by, especially the Real Control conditioner and Crema Care. I also use a curl gel called Ringlet. Find a really good stylist and it will make all the difference. Make sure she takes the time to have a long discussion with you about your hair's behavior and what you want. Look for a Redken salon, honsetly, they get a lot of training. CUT IT! You will feel lighter and sexier.

I would warn you not to go too short. I have tried it all ways with my curls, and length=weight which = pretty curls. I have to disagree with no layering. I think that when done correctly, layers can give you pretty bounce and shape. I have to say that after years of trial and error, curly and straight, you are your best stylist. You know what you want and with the right products, some patients, and a good blow dryer you can make it happen. I use Kenra products, which I love, and an Aveda be curly balm when done blowdrying with my fingers (twisting your hair while blowdrying softly in sections makes pretty curls). I touch up the frizz spots with a curlying iron. Good luck and kuddos for staying true to your own hair!
