Hi! I have an upper baby tooth that never came out but will be needing to be taken care of shortly. I have been researching implants versus dental bridges and was wondering if any of you have gone through this and could give some advice or input based on your story. I am specifically wondering about the cost involved and which procedure you recommend and why. Also if any of you could refer a dentist/surgeon in the Pasadena California area. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

With an implant you are done! A bridge destroys the teeth next to the one being replaced. Not ideal in my book. It's not cheap but it's a permanent solution. Some insurance covers it and some doesn't. None of us can tell you the cost because it will depend specifically on you and what's going on in your mouth. The place to start is asking family and friends if they have had positive experiences with periodontists in your area.

Make sure you go to a periodontist. Periodontists go to school an additional 3 years *beyond* dental school and train specifically with implants along with gum and sinus surgery and treatment of periodontal disease. Some dentists will do implants but really, do you want someone who took a weekend course doing that kind of surgical work? Nope! Give me the professional that did it day in and day out for 3 years solid in school before they even began their professional practice.

My sister had her tooth on a retainer for years and finally went to the implant. She loves it!!! The cost is going to depend on your insurance and dentist, so that is hard to predict. As far as I know, the bridge could have issues going forward, and there is less chance of that for the implant.

I have bridges and my dentist and the hygienists hate them. I got them when I was 15 because the old dentist we went to at the time---that's all he did. One hygenist told me that I should prepare myself for possible problems with those teeth in the future as I age. Bridges are hard on teeth and roots.

I don't know anything about your procedure, but wanted to offer the name of a dentist. I go to Pasadena Smiles on Valley View. This office is operated by a husband and wife team, Dr. Spero & Dr. Koutchek (sp?). They are both great. She's pulled my teeth and he did an emergency root canal for my neice who was visiting from out of town, on a Saturday. It's not common to hear, but I love my dentist!
