I need your help with my poor son's diaper rash. We are in Calif on vacation and my son has an awful diaper rash covering most of his bottom. I feel so bad because I'm sure it happened after his bath. I was in a hurry to dress him, so I bet I didn't dry him off good enough down there and with the humidity a little high in So. Calif, he is just so red and in pain when I change his diaper. I'm running out of Desitin (I've also put cornstarch on it too) and need to get to the store. Can you recommend something better that I should get for him? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for all your replies! I went ahead and got the Butt paste and so far it's starting to go away. It's not flaming red anymore and the area isn't as large. He's also feeling better and not screaming when I wipe his bottom. I wish I could let him go commando, but I can't trust that he won't have an accident. He's 14 months. But I am keeping the diaper on loosely and not fastening his onesie snaps at the bottom. Thanks again!
Boudreaux's Butt Paste works great...have you changed the diapers you are using. My daughter got a rash when using Pampers with dry max...nothing worked to get rid of it until I changed to ones without the dry max in them.
I would try the more expensive type of diaper rash cream. I used it with my son and let him air dry a lot. Just go to a local drug store and ask the pharmacist. Desitin is not strong enough for a severe diaper rash. Good luck!
I found Chafix works really good if Desitin does not. My daughter had to have chafix to work for her, when she got a rash.
If you can get to a pharmacy, ask if they have 1234 cream. It is AMAZING! Nothing else worked for my daughter, and this cleared her up the 1st hour she had it on! And it's not stinky and gross. It gets rid of yeast infections too.
Super Duper Diaper Doo. It's a very thick ointment that protects the bottom without rubbing off in the diaper. When my son was at Children's Mercy, that's what they used for bad rashes. Some places don't always carry it, so you may have to have the pharmacy special order it.
Aquafor. It's kind of like vaseline and comes in a tube or a jar. My pediatrician reccommended with my first when he had bad diaper rash and I've used it ever since with no rash problems. Good luck!
you have good suggestions, but I really think that you should get an antifungal cream just in case. Get the generic Lotrimin, you can get it any pharmacy/Target whatever. Put it on 2X/day. In between those times use any of the suggestions provided (we love Butt Paste too) and when the rash is really bad I usually put a layer of vaseline or aquaphor over the top to seal it all in.
I love diaper rash questions b/c I love sharing what miracle my pediatrician instructed us to do. He said to stay away from cornstarch b/c if it is yeast based it would just make it worse. So, here's the process of EVERY diaper change:
1) Wipe bottom with 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar solution and soft paper towels.
2) Blow dry with blow dryer on low. Move it back and forth and put your hand in the way to ensure it doesn't get too hot.
3) Apply Boudreaux's Butt Paste.
4) At night or nap time place a regular instant ice tea bag in his diaper. Obviously take the string out and ensure the staple is facing away from his bottom.

Bag Balm worked wonders on my little girl.
Boudreaux's Butt Paste...they sell it at Wal-mart and most drug stores. We've used that and Still use it for rashes in that area. It creates a barrier while healing at the same time and doesn't smell either like some of he other stuff. We would use that and our girls would be rash free within a day. Butt Cream...that's what it's called, works wonders. If it last and doesn't go away, calmoseptine can be got at the pharmacy without a script, but it's usually kept either behind the pharmacy or they can order it for you, its not that expensive, sometimes just a pain to keep ordering if your pharmacy doesn't stock it, but if this is a one time thing, butt paste (that's what it's called, yellow tube/box) is awesome.
I tried Desitin and Butt Paste, but what worked best for my daughters when they had a really bad rash was Dr. Smiths. The only place I could find it was Walmart & sometimes and Walgreens or CVS. If you get it, put it on REALLY thick. Usually by the next diaper change, their rash was gone (no matter how bad it was). It was like magic.
However, you should watch because if it is a yeast infection and not a diaper rash, it won't get better and he needs to get a prescription for it.
Vaseline is a good at protecting against diaper rashes, especially when he pees. And after you apply the Vaseline, sprinkle the area with a baby powder that has cornstarch.
When my children were small, the diaper rash ointment seemed to make their bottom burn for a moment. So I don't like that stuff.
I will NEVER use desitin again! my child SCREAMED when I put it on, I sniffed the tube, and it had an obvious perfume odor to it, which only BURNS any sensitive skin. It makes no since to me. But Boudreaux's IS very good. Also, if you like scented wipes, be sure to keep a pack of UNSCENTED wipes on hand for rashes. The purfume in the wipes made mine scream as well. I now buy ONLY unscented. Ultimately, using only unscented products and keeping them dry is even better than ointment. Air Air Air... if you can stand to let him run around "Camando style" it would help too :)
A & D ointment along with the cornstarch. Also, make sure you're using the same soap on him as at home. It could also have something to do with different water. Make sure he drinks plenty of water and avoid juices--they'll cause nasty diaper rashes as well. Hope he clears up soon!
Hi N. it sounds like it might be a yeast rash and if so you will need an rx cream from your doctor and it will start to clear up quickly. My boys have gotten this in the humid months and I'm a float nurse with ob/gyns and peds so see a lot of this. And if at all possible let him go without a diaper for bit to help skin breathe and heal. Hope he is doing better soon and good luck!
Your child likely has yeast issues, so as others have stated, an antifungal cream is in order. A good probiotic (in powder form to mix in your child's formula or food) can keep the yeast under control. If yeast gets really bad, Nystatin can be prescribed by your doctor.
I'll add another vote for Boudreaux's Butt Paste, but also second the idea that if you've changed diaper brands on vacation, try to go back to the usual. My daughter breaks out almost every time I let her wear the scented brand our daycare uses. She does great with the Costco unscented ones, though, and they are even cheaper.

My doc had also told us to use Maalox and then cover with Desitin. Honestly, though, the Butt Paste works better than anything.
I've heard a lot of mommies applying corn starch and a diaper ointment at the same time, but I am wondering.....doesn't that just clog all the pores......how can the skin heal if it can't breathe ???
Anyway....I used Desitin overnite on my youngest and let him go bottom naked whenever possible, so the skin can breathe and heal.....
Boudreaux's Butt Paste!!! Like Dori, my son would scream when I put Target brand Desitin. But with the butt past he will gladly let me put some on him. I also like how it smells. Kinda fresh and pretty.
Oh one thing I like to do if it's a bad one is give him a bath and put some baking soda in it. It helps to sooth.
