Diaper Rash Question

My daughter just got over a terrible diaper rash. I called the doctor and she advised me to use up the nystatin I had (about 2-3 months old) and then prescribed another tube. She told me to only put it on twice a day. I felt that my daughter needed more and my babysitter actually recommended vagisil sensitive skin powder. This worked miracles! In just one day it looked so much better and completely cleared up in three days with using the nystatin twice a day and the powder at each changing. I hope this helps!!

Diluted organic apple cider vinegar applied with a cotton ball works very well. You can see results almost instantly.

I always used Blamex. It worked wonders for my kids. It is thicker than some of the other brands, so it doesn't rub off as easily.

My daughter had the same issue when she was a baby. I never got a prescription, but was told by the doctor to try Budreaux's Butt Paste. It worked like a charm. It has no alcohol in it, so it does not burn. It's an oily texture so it stays on through wetting. The only down side is that it can stain clothes, so you don't want to put too much on. A little goes a long way. You can get it at Target stores in the baby aisle. It is in a yellow box. Funny name, but we swear by it!

just rinse with warm water- no wipes and air dry as long as you can- then mix A and D oinment with Mylanta or malox and apply that every other diaper change and just A and D oinment in between- what malox and mylanta are is a base- to help neutralize the acid from the rash. if after 3 days she is not better she needs to see her ped. Your poor little one, that has to be painful for her! Is it a yeast diaper rash? Yeast rashes are soooooo hard to get rid of. My daughter had one and the pediatrician prescribed Vusion cream for her. It was a little expensive, but worked like a charm. You might want to call your pediatrician as they may want to examine the rash if it isn't responding to normal diaper rash treaments. When my baby was in the hospital last year, the nurses made up a cream consisting of diaper rash cream, liquid mylanta, vaseline, and A & D ointment. It was very soothing for my baby and helped with the diaper rash she had from taking antibiotics. Best of luck and I hope your baby feels better soon.

Hey K.- ok, this is the goofiest thing you'fe going to hear, but it worked so well for my daughter! This is not to prevent or cure diaper rash, but it gives them almost immediate relief from the burn. Take a cotton ball or a tissue, and gently dab some mylanta or other liquid antacid onto the affected area. The burning should stop immediately! Let it air dry naturally (if possible, can she run around without a diaper for a little while? The fresh air will help dry the area out. Just try to keep her on a hard surface like the kitchen for easy clean up!) And then coat it with one of the products that others have recommended below. This will be over before you know it! Blessings on you and your little one.

Here is the recipe that worked for us - my daughter had a diaper rash so badly she had sores on her bottom that were close to bleeding! This cleared it up in a few days and she had relief from the pain immediately:

Use A LOT of each:
Slather on A&D Ointment
Slather on a layer of Budreaux's Butt Paste on top of that
Load her diaper up with plain corn starch
***I have also heard that Maloxx works, but haven't had to try it yet.

If she has a poopy diaper and it sticks to her, sacrifice some sort of pan and let her soak it off with warm water. If you have to use the tub remember to bleach it afterwards, there will be lots of ecoli bacteria from the diaper.

I am going through that with my 17 month old. We consistently use Boudreaux's Butt Paste. We use it whether or nt she has a rash. When it does flare up, we use cool wet wash cloths or cool wet soft paper towels. We have tried the aveeno oatmeal baths and our doctor said to also do baking soda in the bath. We have had nystatin and it just doesn't seem to work as well as I would like. I do know that one thing that also worked was Polysporin(make sure area is completely dry) blowing on her bottom feels good and gets it dry. Put polysporin on and thena layer of the butt paste. If she just wets her diaper and doesn't poop in it, I don't wipe her with any thing and just add jmore but paste. You can only use the polysporin 3 times per day.

The best diaper rash cream that we've used is called Dyprotex (sp?), which we used to be able to find at Walgreens. If you can't find it there, you should be able to find it online. It worked great.

My son is so much more sensitive to diaper rash than my daughter was. Before, whatever I used helped her. Now with my son, we tried everything -- lots of those mentioned (he had loose stools too a lot). I happened to mention it to my friend who used to be a nurse one day, and she said I know this seems simple but Vaseline works best. You know what? She was right. I was thinking, are you serious? After all that time contemplating and money spent, Vaseline? It worked. Good luck to you.

If you know someone who sells Arbonne skin care products- they have a great diaper rash cream. It worked better than the prescription I got for my little girl. It is botanically based and all natural as well. If you tell me what area you live in- I probably have a name for you. Good luck...

K.- take an egg white only and beat it really good. Lay your child down on a towel with legs up and pour the egg on the rash. It will not burn or cause any discomfort. Let it sit for a few minutes and repeat a couple times a day. Also after each diaper change take a clean wash cloth and run it under nice warm water and lay it on her rash and wipe her up clean. Always make sure you dab the area dry before applying any ointment. I used to let my girls run around naked for short periods of time just to let them air their bottoms out. This might be a good time to introduce the potty chair. One more thing, keep her diet away from anything w/acid. It will only make it worse. have her drink lots of water. Good luck!

-Sensi Care cream was given to us by our Peds Derm - you can only get it online (one place to find it is at Amazon.com)
-Our derm also told us that water makes it worse, so try not to bathe or use wipes. You can use gauze pads and Aquanil to clean up after dirty diapers (it;s a soapless liquid). Aquanil can be ordered by your pharmacist I beleive without a Rx.
*Nystatin is great cream - call the pharmacist to check on it's shelf-life.*

I would think that good ole' vaseline should help that cause.Also,I should wonder but if plain yourt would help eliminate some of that as well. If you can get her to eat it,I would say try it!! at least if not plain,then a flavored one but without fruit in it. Also,if you can stand to let her run without a diaper,that would really help!! My 2 1/2 year old get awful diaper rash. Like your daughter he wouldn't even get in the bath tub he would be so raw. Luckily for us he potty trained quickly so no more diapers for us! But the ONLY thing that worked for him was call DRC (Diaper Rash Creme) and it is sold at pharmacy's but it is behind the counter so you have to ask the Pharmacist for it. It works great. Good luck!

My son once had a really bad rash (bleeding and blisters)and I was told not to put anything on it and leave his bum out to the air as much as possible. I did this everyday but after a couple of accidents I got inventive and cut the back part out of his diaper and let him walk around with his bum exposed. It worked and try to keep her out of the water for now, just let it dry and NO scented wiped ever, wash with some lukewarm water.

I would think that she is having a reaction to some of the food she's eating if the rash is that bad. Consider allergy testing. A reaction on the outside of the body is just a reflection of something happening on the inside. If she cries when she pees, have you looked into the possibility of a bladder infection? That will make a burning sensation also. Good Luck.

Triple paste! My 11 month old just had the worst diaper rash and I tried everything. My neighbor gave me triple paste and with one application I could see it getting better. It's a little pricier, look at Target first because you'll pay twice as much at Walgreeens (like I did). So worth it though!

it may be too late for you to get this, but I thought I would mention anyway. yogurt is good for the diarrhea. For the diaper rash, use lotrimin, like for athletes foot, you can use generic too. Someone already mentioned, the rash is like a fungus. The lotrimin works and does not cause discomfort.

My doctor always recommeded Eucerin and it always worked well for my kids.

I didn't read all the other responses, so I don't know if this was mentioned, but one time we had a diaper rash problem with my son and it WOULD NOT go away. We took him in to the doc and he said it was fungal (kinda like a yeast rash). We used a generic anit-fungal cream (over the counter) and it cleared up right away, within 24 hours, I think.

My mother in law told me about using corn starch for diaper rash and it worked like a charm. My boys are teenagers now so I am not up on new remedies but this one helped the rash caused by a rota virus which was a bleeding rash. Good luck

try "triple paste" I got it at CVS pharmacy. It's very very thick and works real well. good luck- it should work like a charm right away.

I have a 6 year old son and a 19 year old daughter...

I was told to use Lotrimin Cream AF for diaper rash. It can be found in the foot care section of any store. I actually use the store brand since it is less expensive. You use it 2 times a a day am and pm. It has worked wonders on both my children. For my oldest it was by prescription back then and now it is over the counter.

It is an anti-fungul cream and it is good to know about especially if you have any boys now or in the future as they get older and get into sports and develope rashes and jock itch.

When the anti fungul cream does not clear the rash in a day or two then it usually signals me that he is coming down with some type of either, cold or bronchitis or ear infection.

Hope it helps. It is good idea to use plain Nivea cream when changing diapers on a regular basis, stuff is better than the Desitin and other creams they advertise. That has been my experience anyway.

For really bad diaper rashes we use Triple Paste (target) and mix it with cornstarch. This always clears it up within a day or two. It is a bit expensive, but we buy the big tub and just use it when we need it. Good luck!

It sounds wierd, but my babysitter turned me onto this... Use Desitin and Neosporin together. My little one gets a nasty diaper rash when she cuts her molers. The pediatrician gave me Nyastatin too, I usually alternate with the Nyastatin and Desitin/Neosporin combo.

My ped. had said never to put powder on a rash, it just makes it worse. Balmex works the best for us, it cools immediately and the rash is usually gone in the morning.

I wish I had know how good the Bordeaux butt paste was the first time around. My daughter had it so bad that it almost looked like a yeast infection and it cleared it up within a day or two. The stuff is amazing in my opinion. We also use non chlorine Seventh Generation diapers too which helps with sensitive skin. Good luck. There's nothing like a baby with a bright red bottom!

We've had really good luck with the Bordeaux's Butt Paste - silly yellow box with a cartoon baby on the picture, but it works!

Hi K., I feel for you and your daughter. It's difficult to see kids in pain. There are a ton of chemicals in diapers and wipdepending on which you have been purchasing. The more "super absorbant" the more chemicals are added. What I've done is switch to only using disposable cotton diapers as well as hypoallergenic wipes with no fragrance. Since the switch she hasn't had one outbreak. Also, while she was going through bad rashes--as well as my friend's toddler, the one remedy that worked EVERYTIME: let her air out for an hour atleast. I know it sounds silly, but you probably already know when she normally has bowel movements (so you can avoid cleaning up a potential mess.) Gels, ointments and powder only make it worse because this particular area is hardly ever exposed to air and is very warm. It burns when she urinates--airing it out will help alleviate that pain, too.

It's been 2 months and we have not even had the slightest of symptoms since our switch. Good luck to you.

The BEST stuff by far that I have found is Aquaphor. You have to make sure she is totally dry and then apply a thick thick coating over it. It works EVERY time!

Baking soda, when she takes a bath pour in a couple of table spoons and take a seperate jar with a tablespoon or two in luke warm water and rinse the diaper area with that. When you change her diaper wipe her with a cloth soak in baking soda and you can put some like on like you would use baby powder - it worked for us when it's really bad otherwise we use only Mustella's diaper rash cream! Good luck!

Keep the affected area "bone dry". Powder with corn starch. It's lighter and more smooth than baby powder. Change her diaper and clean immeditely. Even if you have to stick your hand in the diaper every 15 minutes. Remember, children pee every time they drink. Try placing her on her baby potty during or right after her drink. You may end up having her potty trained by 10-11 months...how nice that would be for you and her.

I know this might sound odd, but I use Mylanta. It was recommended by my doctor. Don't use flavored, just the original. It neutralizes acids in diaper rash the same as it does for stomach acids.

you may want to take her to the dr. you treat yeast infections and diaper rash differently. you may need a professional opinoin.

It is possible she actually has a "teething rash" instead. Both my children have gotten these and there is nothing that can be done to make the rash not happen - just ways to ease it and keep it from getting worse than it needs to be. Neosporin with pain relief is what I use when it gets really bad so that any spots that start to bleed won't get infected. My pediatrician recommended it and it has made a world of difference. When my son first got them he didn't want me to change him and would scream when I used normal wipes - I use the sensitive wipes normally now and switch to soft wet washclothes when it gets bad. Usually the teething rashes only last around 5-7 days, with the worst of it happening around day 3 and lasting a couple of days before it just suddenly heals right up. I've found that my kids will get these rashes as the teeth are pushing in - even before they are visible.

You don't say how long it has been there, but if it seems to be persisting or looks to be too widespread, I would talk to your pediatrician. It could be being aggrevated by something else too. You say she cries when she pees - there could also be a UTI or something else causing a burning sensation.

Just one quick addition -- yes the oatmeal baths are great -- make sure it is pure oatmeal and no fragrance or additives. Once out of the tub, pat dry, let air, top with one of the topical pastes. I like Balmex but whatever you like that is sensitive and UNSCENTED.

Sensitive skin, unscented pamper wipes are great. Incredibly soft and no irritants -- and much softer than paper towel! Caution that Paper towels also have a lot of chemicals to make them white etc so that can irritate too.

Pure corn starch or DRC cream aval. @ most Walgreens or Target @ the pharmacy. Call ahead to get the DRC cream, they run out of it fast. It is 5.99 and worth every penny!!! I use it all the time, but esp. when she gets a bad one...the rash is gone in a matter of hours! It is amazing! Good Luck!

when this happened to my daughter at about 11 months old i would only wipe her with wet papertowels or a wet rag. don't use baby wipes. the dr. then told me to use vasoline. simple...but it worked. I now use vaseline on her all of the time with every other diaper change as a preventative measure. good luck.

Call a pharmacist and ask them about the nystatin. They are so helpful when I call Walgreens.
Try if you can absolutely stand it, leave her diaper off of her for awhile. Use baby wipe without scents. Powder will dry her out more, ow, ow, scratch, scratch. I'd look at some baby oils or something once the actual sore part subsides. If it doesn't stop, as always, call the doctor. Or I always (sorry to the hospitals out there who are getting an overload of phone calls)used to call the hospital pediatrics departments for advice.

Try Triple Paste Cream. It works really well at completely coating the area. I give my kids baths in oatmeal baths (Aveeno). This helps tremendously. I just let them play for about 15 minutes and it really makes the redness go away. Made sure you don't get the bath water in their hair, it kinda is hard to get out. Also, no oneies. They are to tight over the area and you want to have a gap between skin and the diaper. Once I figured this out it helped also!

I use Resinol, found at Hardtofindbrands.com. It is wonderful. Clears up diaper rash in 2 days. I wouldn't use the nystatin unless you know that it is a yeast rash, becasue that is what it is for.

On special order at Walgreens you can order this stuff called
Resinal. My gramma reccomended it to me and it saved us a ton of money on nystatin! It is an overnight miracle. It also saved my four kids bottoms alot of discomfort. Good luck.

Lanolin cream works great... I got some from the nurse at the hospital when I gave birth,but I would assume you can ask your pharmacist where to find it in the store.

Bordeaux butt paste! Affordable and works great!! I am sure you already know this but if you can keep her bare bottomed it really helps to speed up healing. I hope she finds relief soon!

I just recently went through this with my 20 month old daughter. She had a rash and bad diarrhea for almost 3 weeks. Nothing helped with the rash. I even took her to the doctor and he gave me an Rx and that didn't help. I tried A & D, Desitian, butt paste, anything I could think of. Finally I saw my OB for a prenatal check and my Blood pressure was high and she was wondering if something was wrong at home so I was telling her. She said 2 words to me, "Bag Balm". I go what the heck is that, lol. She said you can find it at a feed store or Walgreens or she could have written an Rx for it for me. Is it used on animals and they do have a human version. Well I thought she was crazy. But, I went down to my inlaws and they had some. OMG it basically cleared up after one use! It was awesome. My grandmother inlaw uses it all the time to soften her hands and feet. It was like a miracle cure!

Edit: The diarreha try doing the BRAT diet for a day or two. That was the only thing that helped my daughter. Even if you just give her the Bananna part and Applesauce that should help. Just give her some bland foods. Then slowly introduce her back to the regular things you give her.
