My son is a little less than a week old, yesterday, I noticed that his back has been wet a lot. I was thinking that he was sweating and took his temperature several times and it was normal, plus he didnt seem wet or warm anywhere else. I am now wondering if it is pee but cant figure out how his back would be wet from it and nowhere else. The top of the back of his diaper is never wet and I know it is on correctly. Has this happened to anyone else? Could I just not be changing it often enough?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses everyone! He is circumcised, today is our last day with the vasaline so we will see if it gets better. We will also try different diapers if that doesnt work. Its good to know Im not the only one with this problem!

newborn diapers never fit quite well enough, and they almost need one that goes up the back, but apparently the design has yet to become a bestseller. If he's laying on his back it can flow there.

This totally happened with my son and the only thing I could figure is that the vaseline we were putting in his diaper for his circumcision was making it so his diaper couldn't absorb properly. He wet through everything every time he peed. It stopped as soon as we were done with the vaseline, so I really believe that was the problem...hope that helps!

I had that ALL the time with my newborn boy!! Mostly after a LONG nap or after night time though. I found that some brands of diapers absolutely stink in keeping everything in and found after trial and error that Huggies or any other type of diapers that have the strap around the back help keep everything in the diaper.
You may not be changing his diaper enough though, I only did it before/after a feeding which was between 2 1/2-3 hours (unless he pooped or obviously needed it changed between then) and that seemed to be fine for him.
Sorry if i'm not making sense. good luck! :P

K.,
It sounds like your little one just isn't quite fitting into his diapers yet. I went through this with both of my sons who were preemies and we just had to wait until they got a little more meat on their booties to fit into their diapers.
There was a lot of laundry like blankets and pjs, but it only lasted for a week or so. Congrats and good luck!

That happened to me with my first son, too. Several times a day, I'd have to toss his onesie, sleeper, and blankets in the wash because he'd wet through the back every...single...time. I started putting a waterproof lap pad under him when he slept because I was tired of washing his sheets. (To make all of this laundry worse, our washing machine was in the kitchen and we had to screw the hose onto the kitchen sink, and we didn't have a dryer! There was a laundry line behind our apartments, but it was February in Utah. Brrr!)
My husband told me that he thought I wasn't putting the diaper on tight enough. I thought, "yeah right, Mr. I've-Never-Changed-a-Diaper-In-My-Entire-Life. I'm sure you know how to put a diaper on better than I do!"
Finally our frustrating laundry facilities forced me to shed my pride. I tried putting the diapers on tighter. It didn't feel right. He was so little! I needed to be gentle! But I did it anyway. And the leaking stopped instantly.
As for how the pee gets out the back without soaking the diaper? It runs down his little bum crack and right up his back via gravity without even touching the diaper. Stranger things have happened. Like when DS had a brand new diaper on and managed to pee straight out a leg hole. I was holding him (it must have been an awkward angle or something) and he peed on my shoe. There was a big puddle on the floor. I thought he'd just let the dam loose and his diaper was full, so I went to change him. It was completely dry!!! I still don't know how that happened. Oh, he also managed to get it on his clothes, just not on his diaper. Go figure!
Anyway, try tightening the tabs a bit. I also thought that I was doing it right because it "looked" right. The tabs were about 1/2 inch apart and that's how diapers are supposed to look. But he was a skinny little thing, so I had to overlap the tabs a bit before they stopped leaking.
Good luck!

My son was a sweater too. He would wake up from almost very nap soaked to the top of his head. My oldest son was not. My mother-in-law said my husband was not buy his younger twin brothers were horrible sweaters and still are at age 35.

This happened a lot to my little boy - and the doc said that it's pretty normal. Make sure that you're not wrapping him too tightly and that he's not too warm. He'll grow out of it.

Also, I doubt it's pee b/c little boys tend to pee in the front of the diaper not the back - equipment location.

It's definitely pee! My son did the same thing for months when he was a baby. And to this day I still have not figured out how it ended up back there. It was every diaper change with him. I don't know logistically it could happen I just know that it did. He'll grow out of it eventually.

I agree with another post, its a boy thing. I found that pampers really worked the best, but every child is different, play around with the brands and see what works. Not sure if he is circumsised, but with mine, after the bandages came off, it got a lot better!

My son woke up with a wet back every morning when he was a baby. I don't know how the wee wee leaked up his back like that, but it did, all the time, no mater how I put his diaper on. We put those water proof pads under him in his bouncy seat, car seat, and had a bigger one for his crib, so we didn't have to wash everything every day. He grew out of it.

My youngest would pee out of his diaper, lireally, his diaper would be dry and he would be wet. I had to go to Huggies w/ him and it could only be Huggies, any other brand would leak, once he was about 4 months I could use anything with little problems. Dry a different diaper and see if that helps, it did take a few trial and errors to find the right one.

I assume you are using disposable diapers--
The pee is not being abosrbed quickly. Alowing it to 'run' down and out the back of the dipaer. Changing more often will not effect this.
Try a differnt brand/type/style of diaper-
As PP mentioned place a waterproof pad under him to protect

He could be sweating - my son is a sweater, but my daughter is not. It freaked me out a little until I realized what it was. My husband's side of the family has a lot of sweaters, including him, so I wonder if it's not hereditary?
FYI, some websites I found to help me when I was navigating on the road to new motherhood are:

Enjoy that baby!! Congratulations!

Good quality diapers- Pampers or Huggies always worked best for us. Make sure it's nice and SNUG. I change them everytime I feed them at that age. 8-12 diapers/day.
