First Time Mom-to-be Needing Advice on Diapers

I'm pregnent with my first and trying to make all the right choises for my baby boy. My husband has a 10yr old and at first was very adiment on using clothe diapers. He says they are much better on the baby's skin and will prevent diaper-rash. I've had a couple people tell me they make disposables much better now and I was able to open up and feel some white cloud brand for newborns (only avalible at wal-mart) that feel nice with no plastic that would touch the baby. My husband said those would be fine. But what other brands are good? I'm registering for my baby shower at target and they don't have that brand, is that the only good one? Since I can't open them up to feel them myself I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for as natural as possible clothe-like diapers.

Thanks so much, this sight is always a great help!

What can I do next?

Hi my name is K. I am a mother of 4 beautiful girls. I have used the same diapers with all 4. Pampers swaddlers are wonderful. They are soft, and do not leave red marks around the babies legs and hips like other brands. Another plus is that they never leak!! Hope I was of some help to you:)

Pampers swaddlers are very soft, like cloth. Huggies supreme are also very good. I use both, and I don't have any problems with them. Not a lot of diapers are made with plastic anymore, they are making them to be soft and absorbent. But Pampers swaddlers are the softest in my experience if you decided to use disposibles.

The first 2 months of my baby's life I had her in cloth diapers. There are services for only $50/month where you don't have to clean the diapers. they give you as many as you need and then trade them every week. you just give them the dirty ones and they send you clean fresh ones. it's pretty simple, the only problems i ran into were finding someone to watch her (daycares are not allowed to change cloth diapers) and also having enough covers for the diapers, sometimes they would leak and i would run out of clean dry covers. so if you do go cloth, buy plenty of covers for them. for me cloth was cheaper, but still a little more hassle. good luck!

I only use white cloud myself. The other diapers have too many perfumes and things in them. My daughter had a bad reaction to name brands. Any of the cheaper brands seem to work better for my daughters skin.

hey congratulations! I liked Pampers for my little one that had sensitive skin. All the other ones leaked at first and gave him rashes. my sis in law said that there is a company that will deliver cloth-like diapers then pick them up and bring you more and they are fairly inexpensive. i think the name is little lamb or something like that. pampers were soft though and didnt feel like plastic.Good luck!-B.

I use Pampers. For sizes one and two Pampers has "swaddlers". They are super soft and I've never had a leak (and I've got a 4 and 2 year old and an infant). All three hospitals where i had my babies used them. When you get to size 3 you buy pampers "cruisers". I use luvs once in a while if they're on sale (they are already cheaper than huggies and pampers). But have experienced some leaks.

I was always a pampers diaper buyer with my girls. I have to many unplesant memories of cloth diapers as a kid with a baby brother 11 years younger than I was :) Anyway I started buying Pampers for my son and he would get a rash all the time. So we tried Huggies, same thing..rash! The only diaper we could find that did not give him a rash was Luvs. Now I have to say, not the best diaper as far as leaks go but atleast they dont give my little guy a rash. I asked my Ped. about it and there is something that jells up in Pampers and Huggies that does make some babies get a rash. So really, your baby will tell you which diaper to use :) My vote is Pampers though :)
Good Luck

We loved Pampers Swaddlers- you can get them at target and if you sign up on the pampers website they will send you coupons. Cloth diapers are a lot of work and very messy. As long as you change your child often they shouldn't get diaper rash.
Good Luck

hello, I didn't do much research before buying diapers but everyone recommend (and bought for my baby shower) pampers. I have 4 kids and used them with all. Pampers swaddlers or pampers cruisers are great, they are clothlike, no plastic, and they are comfortable (or seemed so with my kids). Good luck with you new baby, take care.

You've gotten a lot of advice on diapers, but just a couple things . . . My daughter had really skinny legs & always leaked with Huggies because they tend to be a little stiffer, so it was Pampers Swaddlers & Cruisers with her. I did not like Pampers Baby Dry, & to save a little money, she wore Huggies during the day (since I was changing her more often) & Pampers at night. With my son, on a trip once I bought Target brand & he leaked in those. Also, no matter what brand you use (even cloth), diaper rash can still happen (they happen because of their bowel movements - not their urine). Make sure you change poopy diapers promptly & make sure the area is dry before putting on the diaper. AND Congrats!

I have used Huggies diapers for both of my children. My son is 3 1/2 and my daughter 22 months and neither one has had adiaper rash. The only time they did was when I was on antibiotics and they were breastfeeding.

I do have two friends that used cloth diapers and swear by them. If you would like more information from them, send me an email and I can privately give you their emails. I am sure they would be more than happy to share their experiences. I know that one of my friends now uses a natural diaper that she gets online that does not have any dyes, etc. Let me know and I can put you in contact with her. Good luck.

I usually buy huggies baby shaped because of the contour makes it easy for them when they start crawling and I noticed less irritation around their legs with the huggies. hope that helps

Cloth is not hard! It is WAY CHEAPER than disposables. You'll save about $2000 over the diapering life of one child by using cloth. YEs, there is more initial investment up front, but you could also do a registry:
http://www.freeclothdiapers.com

Not only is it cheaper, but it will save literally one ton of waste in the landfills per child and prevent lots of other environmental contaminents from being created. When looking at using disposables, if you're committed to that, consider those that have not been bleached and do not have the gel in them. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dump your baby's poop in the toilet. Don't just ball it up in the diaper and throw it away. So much human waste is being thrown into our landfills, which is not good. Washing or flushing our waste ensures it goes to water treatment.

Oh...and though the disposables might not FEEL plasticy, they are made with plastic, that is, pretroleum products. It takes about one cup of crude oil per diaper. That's considerable.

I am a cloth advocate, as you can see, and teach classes on cloth options. Please feel free to email me with any questions. And again, cloth is not that hard. Esp. the newer options. I have done it with all three of my girls!

Luvs have worked to best for me....When my daughter was a new born we used Pamper Swaddlers which were really nice, but are much more pricey.....
But Luvs are wonderful and affordable. My daughter has is almost 5 months old and has not gotten 1 diaper rash. To prevent diaper rashed just make sure you change them often. Another thing is use unscented wipes. Sometimes scented wipes can irritate the babies skin and cause diaper rashes.
We buy the box of wipes from costco and they work wonderfully....

Good luck.

Hi F.,
I'm all for trying to use what's best for babies, however, my mother used cloth diapers on me and my two sisters, and she was constantly washing etc....Plus not to mention..babies 'still' can get diaper rash, even with cloth diapers. My mom told me stories about us when we were kids and how we would get diaper rashes, and she would have to slab lard on us until we healed up...and she was constantly washing and I can imaging that cloth diapers don't have 'leak guards' and will make more messes than disposable. I've used HUGGIES for my son, and HUGGIES WIPES. I tried the generic wipes, but those there gave my son diaper rash. We immediately threw those away, doctored him up with a slab of vasaline until he healed up and he didn't get a diaper rash since. He's only had 'one' diaper rash and now he's two years old. Disposable diapers are not a bad choice and they have the elastic around the legs for comfort.
Good luck finding what works for you. Congrats on your new baby! :-) And just so you know, what ever you choose for your baby will be great because Mommies know best. :-) G.

My absolute favorite diaper that I used on Both of my children is Pampers brand Swaddlers they are soft and feel cloth like. I have always used only pampers brand diapers. When my kids grew out of the swaddlers we went to the Cruisers. They are super absorbant and have comforting soft bands in the legs. My youngest child "explodes" when she poops and they really don't leak on the sides or up the back. I hope this helps you a little. Most hospitals use pampers (I believe) maybe if you wanted to feel and inspect the pampers you could call the hospital or talk to your Dr. about getting a few to try out.

Seventh Generation makes chlorine-free, non-toxic disposables if that is what you are looking for. I know you can get them at Sunflower, you can read what the company says about them here: http://www.seventhgen.com/our_products/baby/chlorine_free... . You can also buy them off of Amazon with free shipping. I ordered many of my kids' diapers from Amazon because it was cheaper and I didn't have to haul the huge boxes out of the car, the delivery guy did it for me. :)

My daughter would break out in a rash from Pampers, I don't know if it was the scent they put on it or the construction but she couldn't tolerate them.

There is a diaper service in Mesa called Next Generation. I think it is run by the same people who do it in Tucson, I have a few friends who have used the Tucson one and they've been pretty happy with the service. It is not terribly expensive when you add it up.

it doesnt matter what type of diaper you use. if your child is allowed to remain n a diaper ofr any amoutn of time, he/she will get diaper rash. so the most important thing is not to allow them to stay in a wet diaper. would you like to be wearing wet underwear for any period of time> i used cloth diapers because it was more economical at the time. i was a single mom and could imagine paying 20 -30 dollars for a package of diapers. my ob/gyn gave me a months worth of iaper service and after that i bought cloth as needed and it wasnt for long because they last a long time. plus they are better for the enviroment. and the washing that everyone is talking about. you have to do laundry anyway. i just threw in a load in the washer everyday before i went to bed. try a diaper service for a month and see if you like it. if you dont you can always go back to disposables. but i can tell you that no matter what, disposable diapers odnt alow for breathing so the skin is always enclosed in there with the urine and poop. sometimes you may not know how long the diaper has been wet and even if they claim they wick the moisture, the fact is still that they are plastic and dont have breathing room. in arizona's summer you combne the heat with the moisture and you can get all kinds of nasty stuff gorwing in there within a few minutes. that is why its important to clean the baby thoruughly each time you change a diaper. good luck and congratualtions. i think you husband has it right on the money.

answers from Las Cruces on

Well, to be honest, I NEVER used Whitecloud- but my then husband had an issue with generic, cheaper brand diapers. My son used Huggies brand diapers from infancy. We tried Luvs and Pampers, but he always leaked with those. Most, if not all disposable diapers these days don't have a bunch of plastic or anything that will be directly touching baby's skin- infact Huggies now has diapers for newborns that have a slight moon-shape dip in the front to prevent irritation of the umbilical cord during the first couple of weeks after birth.

When making your choice, keep a couple things in mind. 1. With cloth diapers, you have to have clothing guards, or there will be massive leaking, you also have that much more laundry to do. 2. With disposable diapers, you can simply purchase a diaper pail and throw away the mess, or place the diapers in plastic gorcery bags and tie them up, then throw them in the trash- a lot less mess and headache. 3. Cloth diapers don't really have an advantage over disposables- they actually provide more work for mom and dad. 4. Disposable diapers now have a gel-free option, which is what was believed to be the culprit in higher cases of diaper rash, however, it has been shown that the increase in diaper rash was not because of the gel in the disposables, but because they are more absorbent, most parents don't change the disposable after every wetting, and potty diapers have a tendency to stay on the child a little longer than they would with cloth, because it is always evident when using cloth diapers that a child is wet or gone potty, and therefore, it has to be changed more fervently.
5. If you use an over the counter diaper rash ointment after every diaper change, it protects the skin from rashes, keeps the skin soft, heals existing diaper rash almost overnight, and actually helps prevent diaper rash from recurring.

I know it's a lot of information, and it is hard to decide with so many products available today, the best advice I can give, is try out different options to decide what works best for you, and more importantly, what works best for your baby.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

Hi F.,
My name is H. Price my daughter had a terrible time with diapers in general when her rashes were really bad we would switch to cloth but it really didn't help all the much. Huggies makes all cloth diapers as well no plastic. But what I would recommend is getting a really great natural diaper rash cream and make sure to apply every time to prevent those type of incidents. I know of some great botanically made products just for babies and small children that really work. The line comes with body wash, shampoo, diaper rash cream, sun screen, and conditioning oil all of which are botanically based hypoallergenic. I started using them on my daughter just recently and it had cleared up her eczema that she has struggled with since she was about a year old. If you you want more information about them let me know. I know you will love them I call them the miracle creams:)

We LOVE pampers cruisers & swaddlers -not the baby dry ones though they smell funny to us. If you go to baby-r-us you can use as many coupons as you have stocked up. they put no limit to them so you can get diapers cheaper that way and try out different brands. We get ours from sams club in bulk.
I used Whitecloud on the little boy i watch (his parents provided them)and they leak! no matter how tight you put them on no matter if it is one pee or two his cloths always got damp and when he pooped well that was a mess. I also used them on my daughter because a friend bought them for us for the baby shower. we used them up but i did more laundry then when i use pampers thats for sure
About cloth my older sister was very sensitive and could only wear cloth diapers but the disposable ones are very different now then they were it seems they are constantly changing - for the better.

Hi

I have used cloth diapers with both my children ( they are now 2 and 4). In fact we used the same cloth diapers and covers with both kids (great saving money wise)

We bought 2 dozen chinese pre-folds and 6 covers in 3 different sizes and they have lasted through both kids. We have enough diapers that we wash them 2-3 times per week......so it really isn't that many more loads of laundry or more work. They are fabulous! The covers keep the mess in so they don't leak. In fact we had more leaks when we have used disposables when we were out of town then we have ever had with our cloth.

My kids have had far fewer cases of diaper rash then their peers who wear disposables. My daycare provider is always amazed that my kids don't get the rashes that the other kids get and their rashes always seem to clear up faster.

I would really suggest you consider them.

No matter what every kid is still different. For my son, Luvs didn't work it leaked. Pampers Swaddlers is okay. But Huggies worked best. Target and Members Mark diapers and wipes are also great. Kirkland's gave him diaper rash so does the wipes. Oh and depending on if your kid has food allergies, that can irritate and give diaper rash. My son is allergic to corn (corn cereal, cornmeal, cornflour, etc., eggs, shellfish, nuts (seems okay with most nuts except peanut butter) and he's allergic to soymilk - biggest green guacamole like blowout ever.

But if you do go with cloth diapers, I'm no advocate. But I've had some friends that did it and like the other mom said, throw it in the toilet. Because some of my friends threw everything poop and all into the washing machine. That can clog up the pipes and stick to your other clothes. Gross!

by far pampers swaddlers and cruisers are the best. cloth diapers are great for the environment, but if you want to wake up in the middle of the night not only for feedings but for constant diaper changes go for it. If you are not constantly changing cloth diapers, the wetness is staying against the baby's skin... not to mention sticking the poor baby with the diaper pins. I have used pampers swaddlers, pampers baby dry, and huggies on my 7 month old son, and I feel pampers swaddlers fit better (huggies seem so tiny) they smell better and I have far fewer "explosions" and leaks. (get a "Piddle Pad" for the car seat) swaddlers are softer against the baby's skin than baby dry... the baby dry feel thin and papery.. (however they are just a little bit cheaper...) Also... check out pampers.com (oohh.. the gifts to grow are pretty cool with pampers, too) and huggies.com send an email.. sometimes they send free samples.

After years of experience and my own day care, I can honestly say I had no problems with many brands of diapers. Luvs, etc. are great. You might want to investigate the overnight diapers when your baby sleeps thru the night. In case you weren't told about it, they will frequently wet so much that the entire bed is wet, so have a change of sheets, blankets, etc handy. Overnights will prevent this most of the time. You might also want to read the baby books, such as birth to one year (I'm afraid I have forgotten the name but a clerk at a book store can help you, or look for it in Walmart's.) Good luck and enjoy the little one.

Hi F. I would like to first say Congratulations to you on your upcoming baby!! I have a 12 month old baby boy myself and he was sensitive to a lot of the diapers and the only ones I have been able to put on him were the swadelers by pampers. They are very good in my experience using them!! I hope that this helps you out!! They sell them everywhere such as target, wal-mart, babies-r-us, and costco. Take care and good luck!!

White Cloud are soft... I used them for awhile with my daughter. The only problem is that they are not very absortbant, and you can never count on them not to leak. I tried changing her often, but if she just peed too much, it would go everywhere.

I have a 2.5 yr old and a 16 mo old and we only use Pampers just because they have more elastic on the sides. The Huggies would always leave marks on their thighs from rubbing aginst the tape or velcro. Diaper rash is a completely different story, that can be caused by antibiotics, breastfeeding, teething and too much milk. Unless your child has a significant reaction to a certain type of diaper then I wouldn't really say that any of them cause diaper rash.
Good Luck!

I'm pregnant with my third (due in May,when are you?)and I've only ever been able to use Huggies for my kids. It's the only kind that don't case diaper rash, for mine anyways. They're xpandable to help adjust with the babies movements and they don'thave any plastic on them, I also like the velcro clings, they're so much easier than the diapers with the tape. Good Luck to you!

Hi, The brand of diapers that I have always liked is Pampers. The Swaddlers are more clothlike than the babydry kind. I have also tried huggies and some generic diapers. Once the kids are older I use Target generic diapers for the daytime because I stay on top of diaper changes to prevent diaper rash and save the Pampers for nighttime because they are more absorbant for longer durations and I have less leakage problems. Plus, diapers can get pretty expensive. I think if you buy in bulk it is cheaper. I found Babies R Us is the cheapest for bulk when they have a coupon for $5off in the newspaper ad. I think Pampers sizes runs bigger than Huggies. So, sometimes I found myself switching between the two when the little ones were between sizes. And, I found the diaper rash creme that worked best for my little ones is: Burt's Bees baby bee diaper ointment. (found at walgreens or www.burtsbees.com) It is good for sensitive skin & prickly heat. Also, I use the target brand unscented clothlike wipes for my kid's sensitive skin which you can buy in a big box and is the same as the Pamper brand wipes for a lot cheaper. Hope this helps. =0)
