Do/Did Your Twins Sleep in the Same Crib?

My boy/girl twins are currently two months old, and they have been sleeping next to each other in the same crib since they were born. A couple days ago I realized that they were starting to wake each other up, so I experimentally put them in separate cribs to see what they would do. They seem to be sleeping much better, though I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, because I thought it was so precious when they slept next to each other. They sleep longer at night and make less noise while they are asleep when they're apart than when they are together.

What do you think? Do you think it's better for twins to sleep together or apart? Do you think it affects them developmentally? What was you experience?

What can I do next?

I too have twins, boy/girl, now 11yrs. old. You have to do what works for you and them. If they sleep better separated then go with it because that means better sleep for mom and dad and you two need it.

Mine never slept together as they were in born at 27 weeks and were never able to sleep together then the boy was in hospital 2 mths and the girl was in there for 3 months and by then we weren't going to interrupt what was already working. We just kept their cribs close together so they could see each other and when they started standing in them, they could touch each other. Thank goodness we never had any trouble with them trying to crawl out.

SO -I shouldn't even answer your question... since I don't have twins :)

BUT - if I found something that helped my two month old babies sleep longer, and better... I think I'd go with it. Even if it was more precious to see them in one crib :) Make sure you have lots of photos of the two of them in one crib...

I'd guess that it probably helped them sleep when they were tiny newborns (right?) but just as my babies slept right next to me the first few weeks... there came a time when it was better for us both to have a little of our own space for sleeping.

Sorry for answering... :)

What works, works!

All but one or two pairs of twins in my family have slept together (multiples run in my family). Having them apart created shoot-me-now-no-sleep-babies. Two of my cousins (best of friends) had to sleep separately from day 1, or they didn't. Pure and simple.

Even we singletons usually slept together as soon as we were out of the cribs, though. 2-3 kids per bed, separated by age & sex. Later we had separate beds and same rooms (umm.... bunk beds at 11 or 12), and our own rooms in highschool.

Twins together, twins apart, cosleeping, cribs, back, side, tummy, music, no music, lights off, light on... really. When we're talking about babies and sleep... what works, works!!!

Do what is best for each of them to get the best sleep possible.
So if that means them sleeping separately, then do so.
Not all babies like to sleep next to another or sleep well that way.
And yes, it wakes them.

My friend with twins, had them in 2 separate cribs.
They slept better that way.

My twin girls slept in the same crib until about four months old. By then they were moving around when they slept, even though they were swaddled. And all the moving around disturbed each other's sleep. So we moved them to separate cribs. By five months they were rolling over and one day when I put them together for a nap I found one of my girls sleeping basically on top of her sister's neck and head. That convinced me that they definitely needed their own space.

To this day, they sleep in their own beds and never end up in each other's (they're four and a half), but they're super close and great friends. I don't think being apart has hindered their twin bond at all.

my twin nieces switched over to their own beds well before 2 months. As you've noticed, they simply sleep easier & longer.....as we all do when we are at Peace!

I kept my twins in a crib together until seven weeks. I was preparing to go back to work full-time when they were eight weeks old, so if it was going to be a rough transition, I wanted to have time to adjust. As you've found out, the transition was pretty easy. The only time I've heard of trouble is when parents waited to split them up. A friend split hers at six months and it was hard on everyone. You made the right choice!

I don't have parental advice, but my sisters are twins, now adults. They always slept in separate cribs (or at least like yours, past a couple of months). And they always slept in the same room as well. Actually, when they were teenagers our brother moved away to college, so they got their own rooms for the first time. One always ended up in the others room, even as teenagers. I'm sure you'll get more relevant answers, just had to share!

I have brothers who are twins, they slept in the same crib the first 6 weeks or so, after that they kept each other awake or woke each other up with movements and sounds and needed their own cribs. And they never slept next to each other but at either end of the crib, they were big boys from birth : )

My twin sisters had their own cribs, but we did put them together. They used to hold hands or snuggle together.

Eventually you do have to separate them because yes, they wake each other.
