seems like my baby keeps getting colds lately. i've minimized bathing. do you do that too? any ideas how to make them run their course faster? the last one lasted 3 weeks! a woman in a grocery store told me yesterday that it's like that until they reach 3 and then they don't get them as much.... any thoughts on that? do you still take your kids to social gatherings like the library's storytime, etc. if your baby has a cold? how long is it contagious for? i can't believe that we're already walking on the moon and then some, but we have not cured the common cold!!! we should be a vaccine by now. thanx.

A warm bath will help clear out her sinuses. Also, a bulb syringe does wonders to clear out her little nose. My daughter hated it, but we started to make it a game and she "sucked the yucky" out of her stuffed animals noses before we "sucked the yucky" out of her nose, and she would tolerate it more. My daughter's colds seem to last longer than mine would, but I think that is normal for babies/toddlers. Good luck!

I'm not sure why you would minimize bathing, if anything it helps clean away the germs that will likely spread to your family.

The best thing you can do during cold season is wash those hands, and avoid overcrowded places where you know people are likely to be sick.

Every child is different and has a different immune system. My son didn't get his first cold until he was 3 while my daughter has already a couple and she's not even 2.

Bathe her regularly. Wash your hands in hot water and soap several times a day, especially after every diaper change. Keep her out of contagious areas like the play-places at the mall. If you do go, wash her and your hands immediately afterwards. Keep a strict bedtime/naptime schedule. The body heals itself through sleep.

I bathe my children more often when they are sick than when they are not. You have to wash away the germs, especially when they are little and rubbing their noses all the time. Use a vapor bath to clear the sinuses and then use saline drops to dry out the nasal passage. Make sure to use a humidifier or vaporizer to keep the air moist.
Wash YOUR hands all the time and keep them clean so you don't pass a cold back and forth. Keep your sick kids home, they need rest, TLC, and lots of hydration to kick the cold. Do not run them to story time and the grocery store, ect when it isn't necessary.

I use Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath when my daughter has a cold. I put it in the bath tub just like regular bubble bath, and it really helps clear out her sinuses. It makes her sleep better too! I've been using this since she was about 4 months old. She gets an average of 5-6 colds per year, so get used to it. And you'll start getting them too.

I don't usually take her out to her social gatherings until about 3-4 days after she gets the cold. I just don't want to infect other people's kids.

Bath her regularly, maybe move the bath time when it not so cold like afternoon or morning (if possible). Do not leave her undressed after bath. Have a heater where you change.

Apply warm olive Oil and massage over her chest and back with camphor that helps them get over the cold faster.

I will restrict the bath only if she has a fever, but in that caase wipe her with wash cloth or similar.

Things do get better, Cold is said to run its course wether you give any medicine or not but I do relive the symptoms by the massage.

My son has had a cold for a month & the doctor says that he picked up another cold after getting over one. He says that happens alot to babies.
I make sure to bathe him every day, whether it be just washing him with a warm washcloth one day & a bath the next. I also think it's important to change the sheets & changing pad cover alot to keep germs to a minimum. Also, use a cool mist humidifier. They make baby Vicks rub for their chests & the infant nasal drops help loosen the mucus.
I'm no expert, but I think these things help him alot!

i wouldn't recomend taking them out doors after a bathe (submerging in water) with a cold lurking, maybe washing them up would be better. also healthy meals to build their immune system which also make them prone to contracting this virus from others when you take them out. a cold is like the the stomach flu, it's a virus that they picked up and we can only treat the symtoms and take preventive measures to lessen how often it happens. hey it just maybe your child that comes up with that cure.

Baths are great for colds, imo, because the heat/steam helps decongest sinuses. I add drops of lavendar oil into the bath too make the vapors therapeutic too. ( Essential oils are antiviral/antibacterial.)

I did bathe my son with colds at that age since they aren't very good at blowing their noses. The steam helps clear their head naturally.

I would continue to bathe her regularly. If anything I would bathe her more. The only true cure is time, rest, and hydration. It just has to run its course. I remember when she first started going to daycare she was sick all the time. Or pediatrician told me that it would take 6 months to a year for her to get her immune system up after being taken care of at home for the fist year. Something you may not know is that people that get out and are exposed to the public more often have a higher immune system and don't get sick near as often. Don't worry so much about what she is exposed to in general, she will develop her own immune system too!

Absolutely keep bathing her - it helps soothe them and wash away the germs. Just make sure the room is warm and toasty (especially as it's getting colder these days - my bathroom is drafty!) and you dry her off and get her dressed and snuggly ASAP. The vapor baths others have mentioed are great! The best thing for a cold is lots of rest and a bath helps them get there.

And news for the lady in the grocery - my 3-yr old started pre-school in August and it seems he has a cold or some other bug way more than before he was 3, I don't think it ever ends, really!

Finally read your baby and if she seems really uncomfortable, feverish, if you felt that way, would you want to go to the library for storytime? If you think she might do better with staying at home with warm snuggles from mommy, then skip the library. Runny nose but otherwise good spirits? Snuggle her up and head out if it makes sense.

GOOD LUCK!
