Do You Carry Pepper Spray?

Hi Moms - On a walk with my 3 kids the other day, a little dog came running out of the bushes. It startled me, but it seemed to be friendly. We just ignored it, and kept walking. The little dog gave up and ran off. No harm done.

I got to thinking what if next time its a much bigger, more aggressive dog?? I'm alone with 3 young kids, what would I do? We've had stories in the news recently about people being attacked by Pit Bulls. (I'm not scared of Pit Bulls as a breed, any dog can be aggressive, there just seems to be a lot of Pit Bulls in my area)

I'm not sure how much of deterrent pepper spray would be, but it has to be better than nothing at all. Do you all carry pepper spray on you? Where would I buy such a thing?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My mom mixes jalapeno juice and water and puts it in a spray bottle and take it with her when she walks or rides a bike. Where I live I don't have to worry about that too much. Dogs are supposed to be on a leash or in a yard fenced in. But I think having something with you is a good idea!!!

I did in college. I use to pull it out of my purse when I was walking to my car at night. No harm buying some and keeping it in your purse. Personally, I don't have that fear anymore.

No, I'm a Black Belt, don't need it.

One of the things I learned while training is ----****** NEVER CARRY A WEAPON UNTIL YOU ARE WELL TRAINED IN IT'S USE******** ------

An attacker can turn any weapon you have against you. It's better to be trained to defend yourself using your body as a weapon.

As far as dogs go I would never use pepper spray on a dog. If the dog is really friendly but a scardy cat you could hurt him. I have a small dog that will bark and bark but it's all false bravo. The minute you try to pet him he runs behing a chair or under a table. If you use pepper spray against a dog that is truly aggressive it could make him more aggressive.

I used to carry it when I lived downtown. I walked to and from class, and often to and from parties or the bar, sometimes alone. I bought it at my grocery store in the hunting goods department. Our groc store is like a mega store though. Call Wallmart or a hunting place like gander mountain?? I bought the kind with a safety, and it also had a special powder in it so if the police caught the guy, or dog, in question they could shine a special light on them and it would glow. My friend actually had to use hers once, I never did, but it made me feel safer. I had one that attached to my key chain.

Wasp spray works just as well as pepper spray.... and sprays really far.
We carry a stick when we walk tho.
I have a can of pepper spray in my office desk drawer, just in case.

I have some but I don't normally carry it with me. I used to when I would work afternoons and not get off until 10pm. I had a few stalkers (I used to work at kohls) and they would follow me around the store. One even asked me out and of course I said no! But he would keep on following me around so I would keep it with me when I would walk out to my car at night. I do also have it with me when I know I'm going to be out late or something. Anytime I get a bad feeling about somewhere, I have it, but I don't normally take it with me day to day

No I do not. I would not pepper spray a dog either. A squirt of water in a dogs face should suffice.

Remember that something as simple as pepper spray can be turned around to hurt you as well. If the wind blows a certain way, etc... you'll be the one sprayed and if you are being attacked, someone could use it against you.

My daughter is a black belt and even though I am not, I am familliar enough with self defense techniques that I think I could take care of myself pretty well. She, on the other hand, is capable of killing someone if needed.

Yes, I carry it on my key ring. I bought mine at a sporting goods store.

I had pepper spray on my keychain when I was in high school. I think my mom bought it from Wal-Mart. In college, when I moved to Chicago, she upped the ante and bought me tear gas :)

I've never used either, although once my sister's friend accidentally set off the pepper spray when we were at a Taco Bell. Yeah, that wasn't a great experience. We were all vomitting, and no, it wasn't from the chalupa ;-)
