you do not need a special seat for a 6 year old other than his own seat he can't sit in anyones lap. but the seat belt will be fine for him. have fun on your trip.
My son is 6 years old and flying with us for the first time-domestic from NY to California. Do I need to purchase a special car seat for him or bring a booster seat? pls advise, those who have flown with a 6 year old before thanks.

No, not on the plane. In fact, most booster seats say they are not approved for airplane seats. We always take ours for the rental car, but we check them with our luggage. We bought bags for them to go in to keep them cleaner. You can check them for free, just let them know they are car seats when you check your luggage.
No, he will be just fine to sit in his own seat. Bring snacks and fun things to do.
No. My DD is 5 and sat in the seat with just a lap belt. If you feel your son would be more comfortable, consider a CARES harness. The airline will not require a booster or car seat for the flight.
You can bring and use a harnessed carseat. Make sure it is FAA approved (most are and have a sticker). Evenflo Securekid fits older kids, among others.
I would not want to put my own 6 year-old in just the lap belt on the plane. We bring the carseat, use it on the plane, and in the rental car.
We do not use boosters until the kids are older, usually 8. (And a booster cannot be used on a plane; you MUST have a shoulder and lap belt, like a car).
No booster on the plane, unless it has a back, but then not sure. My kids do not use the car seats on the planes. We bring my daughters car seat, but we gate check it.
Do the planes require a seat, no they do not.
no i would bring the booster but check it when you get on the plane.
No. If you want to take your booster for when you get to CA, you can check it as baggage for free.
nope.
