Dog Pee - Sacramento,CA

I have a microfiber sofa and love seat. I'm pretty sure one of our dogs peed on one or both of them or on a blanket that was on them. Before we got one of our dogs (small chihuahuas) a few months ago, I used to just use a wet towel to clean the sofa and loveseat and spray on a little Fabreeze to freshen them up. Now I am thinking of having them professionally cleaned. I don't want to spend the money, but the thought of pee on them grosses me out. I refuse to sit on them. If I do have them cleaned is there a giant plastic cover for couches I can put on them when we are not home? FYI I am looking into a dog trainer to come to our house to potty train the one dog that has issues. Can't take it anymore!!!

What can I do next?

I agree that deeply absorbed pee is not coming out with surface cleaning.

I don't know a lot about dog pee (except that my dog deposits it in some pretty inconvenient locations!) but maybe it would help to know that human pee is STERILE! I learned that on Dr. Oz - in fact, he said military personnel are taught to clean wounds in the battlefield by peeing on them when no water is available! There's definitely an odor, but barring infection, the urine is sterile.

Might make you feel less grossed out.

You can have them professionally cleaned - but don't kid yourself: if any urine has soaked into the cushions (foam) no professional cleaning is going to get that out. Even professional cleaning is only superficial.
Personally I wouldn't spring the money. My DD once peed one the couch while she was potty training - I just washed it off and sprayed a bunch of enzyme cleaner on it...that got rid of the smell just fine - however of course it didn't sit for a long time to soak in...

I would crate train the dogs so they can be in their crate when you're not at home. That's what we're doing with our dog. She loves her crate and I don't have to worry about her destroying my furniture or peeing in the house.
Good luck!

The odor of dog and cat urine can be neutralized by using a solution of white vinegar. I would soak the area you think was peed on with a solution of about 1/4 cup of vinegar to a quart of water. Then use a wet/dry vacuum to pull it out of the material, and let it dry. If the sofa and love seat are easily moveable and you can set them either outside in the sunshine, or next to an open window where the sunshine will hit them, that might also help.

You can have them cleaned but use one of the pet store products that break down the enzymes of dog urine (vomit, etc.). Then take your dogs out often since they are small they will need to go more often than larger dogs. You may want to start teaching your dogs to stay off your sofa.

I am not sure if the urine soaked into the cushions but I have a mocrofiber couch and I take off the covers and wash them on the delicate cycle on cold and hang dry them. I have never had any problem with washing them in the washing machine.

Small dogs-especially, must be walked-you can't always let them out into the fenced-in yard-they like to walk around and feel in control. Have the sofas professionally cleaned and keep the dogs out of that room. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" applies to dogs-if they are never permitted to go inside then they will learn that they can only go outside-unless they are ill-then, sometimes, they have accidents. Also-the dogs don't have to be on the sofa-they can be trained to stay off-sometimes when humans treat dogs like people, the dogs start treating the people like dogs.

-I would get them professionally cleaned.
-Febreeze is good for light, topical odors or just to freshen up the smell
of a room now and then.
-Then put something on the couches (like bins or boxes) so they won't
jump up on them when you're gone. Or cover them w/plastic just while
you're gone.
-They used to make durable plastic coverings for sofas that you left on.
While I HATED those at people's houses, it might be ok to put on when
you are leaving the house.
-Take them out to pee a lot (esp little dogs).
-Invest in a doggie door so they can go out on their own esp when you're
not home.
-Hang in there. Even old dogs can learn new tricks.
-Call a trainer for advice but be careful. Not all trainers are good. They can actually make your dogs behavior worse! I've seen this many times.
