Dr's Lintecum & Nickell - St. Luke's Plaza Anyone???

I'm trying again as I didn't get much feedback on them with my last question. Surely there's someone out there? I am hoping for a VBAC but just want to know your thoughts on this group. There are a few other doctors in the practice as well. I have heard some bad things about both doctors from one person on another board but don't want to base my decision on one response.

I also have an appointment with Dr. Schwartz on Feb 8th but want to be able to make an educated decision with other's feedback. Someone else responded to check into the midwives but Dr. Schwartz office has a midwifery and I was told by his nurses that the midwives don't do VBAC's. I don't feel comfortable with a home birth.

Any advice appreciated!!

What can I do next?

I have known Dr. Nickell for a number of years and know she will look after your best interests. She is a very caring woman and doctor.

As an adoptive Mother, I know nothing about VBAC, however, my sister delivered my niece w/ Dr. Lintecum. Her regular OB (from that group) was on vacation when my niece arrived 1 month early. Dr. Lintecum oversaw her care and delivery. She was very happy with him.

Also, I go to the group where Dr. Schwartz is located. I go to Dr. Johnson and have for years. I love her!! Again, I know nothing about what a VBAC is, but Dr. Rebecca Johnson & her staff have taken good care of my "women's health" issues for years. I think you would be fine with either doctor, sometimes it's just a matter of who you are most comfortable with. Best of luck.

DR. Lintecum delivered both my son's. He is an amazing and caring doctor. I didn't live anywhere near the plaza for either delivery, but was willing to drive the extra miles to have him as my OB.

I had a still birth at 34 weeks in between my two boys. Dr Lintecum did everything I would or could have ever expected from him with that delivery. Then, when I got pregnant again, he monitored me from the minute I saw him. He took every preventative measure possible.

He was in the delivery room with all of my babies and checked on me often.

He is actually delivering my best friend's first little girl right now as I type this. She has had complications throughout her pregnancy and has thanked me OVER and OVER again for recomending him to her.

I would recommend Dr. Fredrick Lintecum to any woman who hopes to have children. He will not let you down.

I don't know any of the doctors that you specified but I thought I would give you some advice anyway. I had a c-section with my first and really wanted to try a VBAC with my second. I went to a doctor that I thought would be suppportive but she ended up not only being unsupportive, but doing everything she could to talk me out of it. I ended up with a scheduled c-section (I was stupider back then) and have regretted it ever since. There was absolutely no reason for me to not be able to attempt it. I would suggest that you meet both doctors. It sounds like you are early enough in the pregnancy that if you decide you don't like either one, you still have time to find someone else. Tell them what you want right up front and get their oppinion. Don't let them tell you that it "might" be an option because that is usually just a stall tactic. If they don't give you the answer you want, go somewhere else. VBACs are very common these days and are actually starting to be recommended again depending on where you get your info from. In MOST cases, there is not reason why you can't at least attempt the VBAC and a good doctor will support that decision. Do your homework and be prepared to discuss your options with the doctor. If they see you are educated, they will be more likely to listen to you.

I don't know anything about that practice, but I agree, a home birth VBAC would be too risky. My OB is fantastic but doesn't do VBACs. Not because she can't, but because she won't do them in the hospitals she delivers in now, St. Luke's South and Menorah. She told me she did them all the time when she did her residency at Truman (I think?). It has to do with the floorplan of the hospital because there's only something like 8 minutes to deliver the baby and get the mom to emergency if she starts to hemorrhage. Anyway, she told me she'd be happy to recommend some dr's if I decided to do a VBAC. You could probably call her practice and get the recommendations, or even ask her opinion about those docs - she definitely won't hold back. She's a straight shooter. Her name is Dr. Traci Nauser, and her practice is Center for Women's Health which she runs with her dad. The phone number is ###-###-####. Good luck!!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice about these doctors, but I wanted to say that Dr. Schwartz probably won't give you a VBAC, either. I totally understand you not being comfortable with home birth (I wasn't for my first VBAC), but it is getting very hard to get a VBAC in a hospital these days. They will often tell you what you want to hear and then do whatever they want when you are in labor, vulnerable, and scared. Your best bet is to get a doula and do A LOT of research if you really want a VBAC. The risks involved are small; it's a political, financial, and convenience based decision on the part of OB's and hospitals not to offer or encourage them. Good luck!

Do to the risks I would really avoid a VBAC at home, though chances are everything will be just fine. I've heard that Ferns, etc on the Plaza will do them, but most mid-wives won't because of the risk and you only want to be safe and still have the birth you want, so having an MD is probably best. Good Luck and Congrats
