Dyed Carpet

I came home from work last night to find black hair dye on my carpet where my 20 year old daughter decided to dye my 12 year old neices hair. They did the hair dying outside, but got in on the bottom of their shoes and tracked it in when coming inside. I now have several shoes prints on the carpet. Does anyone know how to get the hair dye out of without compromising the color in the carpet? By the time I discovered it, (of course neither of them saw it!), the dye was already dry and loving its new home.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the great advice. I am going to try the Sol u mel. Several of you suggested it. That sounds like the answer.

If none of the "at home remedies" work, a carpet store or cleaning service could probably strip the carpet and re-dye it the correct color~

Hi T.,

I so feel for you. Hair dye is absolutely one of the hardest things to remove from any surface. I have been shopping with this great online company for quite a while and absolutely LOVE one of the 3-in-1 cleaner, which really removes hair dye and permanent marker from various surfaces. My now 5 1/2 year old has had his moments with coloring my walls with permanent marker. I also helped my hair stylist get some hair dye off her tile floor that was dried in for over a year with this cleaner when she'd tried everything. If you want to know more let me know. I'll certainly give you all the ins and outs of how you can get what you need. Just email me personally - ____@____.com.

You may be able to carefully trim to top of the dyed carpet with scissors. You will never notice that some areas aren't as long as others. Or else, you may have to have a guy patch in carpet from your closets.

Try tide detergent, that is what people wash their hair in when they dye it the wrong color.

Have you tried pouring some Sprite, gingerale or 7-up on it ? blotting up the color when the soda bubbles? Then use some Oxyclean ? You could also try pouring a small amt of milk on it and see if any color comes up ,and again blot it with papertowels or an old rag ? You could also try some woolite w/ Oxyclean in it . Just a few suggestions ? I also know of friends that used Murphys oil soap on it. Hope this is helpful ! Good Luck, C. S.

Depending upon the value of the carpet you can try using peroxide, but I don't have a lot of faith it will work on dried dye.
I'd call a professional carpet person.
The other option is if you have carpet to match in a closet or somewhere not noticeable cut out the dyed carpet and glue gun patches from the closet.
I'd also make my daughter pay the cost of any repair! LOL

You can buy hair dye remover at most drugstores or beauty supply places like Sally's. My son spilled egg dye all over him last Easter and that was the only thing that removed the neon pink dye. :) Good Luck!

Call a carpet care professional, but you will probably have to replace the carpet or get some rugs to cover the foot prints. Even plain dirt is very hard to get out of carpet, so I imagine hair dye is impossible.
I have had some luck getting out ink with hairspray and nail polish with mineral spirits, but I think that is very h*** o* the carpet fibers and pad (plus smells horrible because it is such a strong chemical
Good luck and have fun "ringing some necks" so-to-speak.

I know some stuff that will take it right out, it is called SOl U Mel. You can only get it through a company called Melaleuca. I use it and it will get out just about anything from perment markers to nail polish. I just got out some stains that had been on my kitchen floor that I had not been able to get out in months, I also used it to get some stains out of my car seats that had been there for almost a year and nothing else would take it out. This is an all natural product that has no harsh chemicals or toxins in it and it is very safe to use and breath.

Hi T.,

I use a product which is a natural solvent and they has done wonders with some very strange stains I've had, from ink and blood to wine and grape juice. One of them actually broke down oil-based Kilz paint as if it had never been there.

Regards,

M.
