Ear aches tend to hurt worse at night.....
The best remedy until you can talk to a doctor would be something warm... I remember as a child, using a hot water bottle for an ear ache...
To make your own hot/warm pack, you can take a washcloth, get it wet, and put it in a ziplock bag. Put it in the microwave for just a very short time (30 seconds, maybe?) to make it warm, but not hot. Wrap it in a thin towel before using it against his ear. Make sure it is not too hot, but just a soothing warmth.
BTW... my son had frequent ear infections as a child, and he ended up getting tubes in his ears, also. He still got ear infections (but it all just drained out of the ventilation tubes, so there wasn't any pain), so the doctor put him on a nasal spray (like flonase). That worked wonders. And yes, he did outgrow the ear infections. He is now 22, and I doubt that he has had an ear infection since the tubes came out.
I agree that if he is in pain, that something is blocking the tube, or it could also be an infection in the outer ear canal (like swimmer's ear type of thing), or the tube has come out and the ear drum has sealed over.
