Ear Problems with Daughter

Our son went through this same thing only it would cause him to get infections in his ears as well. We went through a few months of 2-3 infections in a month. Needless to say he ended up getting tubes put in his ears (he was only 13 months old at the time)....what a WONDERFUL thing that was. The tubes make his ears drain properly, so no infections since (he is now almost 3). I will second the fact that you need to see an ENT just to at least see what they suggest. They may put your child on drops for a certain period or they may suggest tubes, but at least you will know so that you will have some peace of mind. Peace of mind is never a waste of time regardless of what any Dr. may think. Goodluck!:)

I would take her to an ENT Dr better to be safe then sorry, ya never know what it can be. I wouldnt say it would be wasting time, I would look at it as peace of mind. I wouldnt try to have her pop it herself it could be something else and by doing that could damage the eardrum. An ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Dr would know more than a regular Dr.

My son had terrible ear infections. He has had 11 since he was born and he's only 2!!! My doctor didn't want to do tubes. I am not sure how I feel about that. On one hand I felt that tubes were the answer, but on the other hand I understand not putting them in if you don't have to. He was miserable, and consequently so were we! After he had so many of them we couldn't tell anymore that he had them except for the fact that he would not sleep through the night. Anything that you can do to make your son more comfortable, do it. Go to an ENT. It will make you feel a lot better and piece of mind is a beautiful thing when it comes to your kids. Don't worry about wasting their time. You won't be. I kind of wish that I would have followed my gut instincts and took my son to an ENT. Good luck!

I can HIGHLY recommend Dr. Pamela Nicklaus at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. She was awesome! She is has a minimalist approach...if the kid doesn't need it we don't do it. With that said, here's my story...

My son was showing delays in speech...we only had 1 ear infection his entire life (this was by age 3)...FINALLY a speech therapist dianosed my kid (because he was this way and so were 2 of his 3 kids) as probably having fluid on his ears and blockage of his tubes...we went to see an ENT in Leavenworth who put tubes in but still didn't LISTEN to me about my kid not hearing....FINALLY, I got a second opinion...Dr. Nicklaus said that not only had the other tubes not been effective, but he needed his tonsils and andnoids out to clear the tubes (something most Dr.s won't do these days but she fought with my insurance to get it covered b/c of Sean's circumstances). She asked me prior to surgery if I wanted the tubes back in my son's ears and I felt so confident in her abilities I told her that she was the Dr. and whatever professional AND motherly opinion she had when she was in surgery I would bow to. She discoverd that he still had fluid on the ears and decided to put in the tubes and we haven't had a lick of problems since (and that was over a year ago now).

Ear infections are a big deal (especially if you have a wailing kid for the entire night). PLEASE, get your kid some medical help...chewing gum and popping their ears will NOT help this situation and may even cause damage to their ear drum. If you can't get into an ENT in a reasonable amount of time, just bundle your kiddo up and take her to the urgent care (ER) of Children's Mercy...they will do an initial treatment and you will be on a fastrack to an appointment with one of their ENTs (faster than if you just called in).

My 17th month old son has had 10 ear infections and 2 sets of tubes so.....I feel your pain! Definatly get her to and ENT it will NOT be a waist of time!!!! Ear infections can sneak up on your fast and then they sometimes never go away.
