Does anyone have a child that had ear tubes before? My son had them put in on Wednesday and now he has the most horrible ear infections with a very high fever. Just curious if this is common right after

My daughter had tubes put in a couple of months ago and has had no problems at all. They told me that the first couple of days after having the tubes put in, she might run a fever. The doc gave me some drops to help with any pain. Now she has been doing awesome with no pain or ear infections.
I would IMMEDIATELY call your ENT. Both my 4 year old and my 17 month had their tubes done a few months ago and neither has had ANY ear infections, fever, or runny nose since. My ENT advised at the hospital to call if there were any issues. Good luck and we will keep you in our prayers.
My daughter had an ear infection every month for 5 months in a row. My 18 month old daughter had tubes put in in February(she was 15 months)-within 2 weeks she had another ear infection. She continued to get them. The tubes were clogging up not allowing the fluid to drain. We used the Ciprodex drops, and oral antibiotics with each of the subsequent ear infections with no luck. The Dr even tried Vigamox eye drops in her ears-no luck. So at the end of April we ended up having another surgery-this time to remove her adenoids and replace the existing tubes. This worked! We have not had an ear infection in almost 2 months. The dr also put her on a daily allergy nose spray called veramyst. The adenoids were apparently allowing a lot of mucus to stay lodged in her sinuses are ears. Once the adenoids are gone the fluid drains down the throat. we definately see a big difference if we miss the allergy medicine-she does not sleep well. It is scary to send them in a 2nd time-you just keep wondering if maybe after they get over this infection that they will be just fine-you worry that you are doing something so extreme and maybe you dont need to. But I can tell you that it has changed our lives-this is the first time that we have not seen a Dr for 2 months straight. The recovery was fairly easy too-they give you a higher dose pain killer for the first few days. She was able to go back to school a few days after the surgery. We think it was a combo of the adenoids and the allergy meds
Both of my boys ages 12mo's and 2 1/2 had tubes in 1/08. I fought it for over 6 mo's and finally gave in. The older has done just fine w/no inf's, fvr, or even a cold. The younger has had 3 additional inf's w/high fvr. At least his ears drain now and we can use the drops instead of a antibiotic that enters his blood stream. If he is prone to ear inf's they tubes will allow his ears to drain for a couple of days to get everything cleared out. You should have been given some antibiotic drops to help w/the inf. If he continue's to run the fvr after 4 dys then call the ENT and let them know your status. Like I said, we drained for about a wk then were clear for a wk then drained more. Each time we ran a fvr and I often wondered if he was allergic to the tubes or not responding or just what was happening. It took a good 2 mo's to totally clear his ears. Wish I would'v had the tubes placed earlier; I didn't realize just how bad his ears really were. We are scheduled to have his adnoids out in August. He has actually been well for 2 mo's and that is the longest since he was 8 mo's old. He is beginning to sleep better at night and during the day and is so much happier and content. He is 17 mo's now and I pray health and healing over him everyday! Hang in there; it can be a long road. Have you heard of Juice Plus?? Just went to a presentation this am and will definately purchase the gummy's for both of the boys.
I'm sure you've called the doctor and he's on antibiotics. If not, do so. My son and daughter both had tubes and although it was years ago, I do not remember having that problem at all. The infections stopped as soon as we got the tubes put in. They wouldn't do the surgery until the infection was clear (which is hard since that's the reason we needed the surgery). It could be he had some infection before the surgery or from the surgery. I would definitely make sure the doctor is aware of the situation.

When you say he has the most horrible ear infections, do you mean his ear is constantly draining yellow pus? If so, they are doing their jobs. IF he has complaining of ear pain, it's very possible one of the tubes is plugged up (which can easily happen) and the ENT can fix that.
It's very possible that he just happened to get a very bad cold and you are noticing the ear infection (drainage) now that his ears have tubes.
I've had tubes 4 times, my son once and my other son is getting them Monday.
I hope all gets better for your little one soon.
My daughter had ear tubes placed when she was nine months old. She had an ear infection when we had them placed and her ears drained for 3-4 days after the surgery. We got an antibiotic drop, Ciprodex, to use in her ears after the surgery anytime we noticed the drainage. After the first 3-5 days of applying the medication the ear infection cleared up and she has not had a problem since. The occasional sore ear with minor drainage but very few and far between. She always ran a fever with any ear infection she got. She just had her 2nd birthday and her pediatrician has told me the tubes are starting to fall out. I'm hoping her infections don't come back afterwards
My daughter got tubes put in her ear. In march of this year she is 19mos. So
i feel your baby could have and ear infection, the tubes are design to prevent ear infections i would make a
doctors appointment soon. I feel the tubes have been great and when she turns
2, her tubes will be removed. Alson your
doctor should have gave you drops to use
in his ear and if you see blood or puse leaking you should really make an appointment. Good luck
We've had 2 sets of ear tubes on our 2 1/2 year old boy. The only problem we have had is some bleeding and some drainage after the ear tubes were put in. They gave us drops afterwards and that cleared it up. He's had 1 ear infection about 1 year after the ear tubes were put in (cause the ear tubes were coming out). I would suggest having your Dr. look at your child. Maybe the ear tubes aren't working right and more needs to be done. That doesn't sound like a normal reaction and it should be helping and taking care of that problem. Hope your child gets better.
There use to be a time when ear tubes were the cure all for all frequent ear infections. My son had to have a set due to his frequent ear infections. I have also worked with children who required a second set due to frequent infections after the first set was placed. I would listen closely to what the ENT is saying and go from there. All children are very different and what works for one will probably not work for the next.
Ear tubes are designed to allow infected material to drain out of ear canals. Therefore you are now able to visualize what you couldn't before when your child's doctor used an otoscope to find an infection. My son's ent allowed me to call his office if I saw drainage and he would prescribe eardrops and/or oral antibiotics. The ear tubes seemed to dramatically reduce the number of infections he got (although his pediatrician would say it is a factor of age as well, which seemed to be true in my daughter's case). I would contact your doctor;s office though to make sure they don't want to recheck him. My son had his put in at 13 mths, and they have worked well for him. Hope your son feels better soon. -jm
My son has had ear tubes put in 3 times but he had a cleft lip and palate so he needed it for that. but he could have gotten the infection from the hospital... you should be putting drops in his ears after the surg for 7 days 2-3 times per day... to prevent infection. He should also get on antibiotics becuase you don't know what type of infection got into his ear.
Good luck, Its a real simple surgery but still a surgery and still scary.

My son had tubes placed in his ears years ago and we never had a problem! Life was good :) Talk to your pediatrician about this or your ENT. Something isn't right!!
My boys both had tubes twice. Never any infection after the surgery. The second time my oldest son had tubes, he was about 3 and the tube came out the same night. The fluid was so bad, the Dr. could not get it all out and it pushed the tube out. We panicaly called the ENT. He was very nice, said let's see what happens. It must have served it's purpose in that short time. He is 15 and never had another ear infection.
I would call the ENT if he is haveing any fever at all. That does not sound normal to me. Good Luck!
Hi G., my oldest daughter had tubes put in her ears when she was about 2.5 or 3 yrs old. She had several ear infections that would not respond to antibiotics, that was why we finally decided to have the procedure done. It was the best thing we could have done...she has not had an ear infecton since, and she is 8 yrs old now. Her tubes finally fell out when she was 4(I think). She has not had any problems. I suggest talking with your ear/nose/throat specialist that performed the procedure. They may be better able to explain why your son still has an infection. It is the weekend so you will probably have to call the after hours line, but if you are really concerned sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry. I am sure they will be able to ease your mind. Good luck, and I hope your son feels better.
Three of my kids (I have 4) have had ear tubes and none of them had anything negative afterwards. I can only suggest you call your Dr. to find out what to do. Pain and infection was not a normal reaction in our home.

I would call your dr. I have 2 kids that had ear tubes and we never had this problem. Hope he feels better soon.
he probably still has some infection in his ears. sometimes they get infection in the tube. he may be allergic to the materials they make the tube out of. you need to call the doc
No that doesn't sound right; he shouldn't be running fever. Call the doctor to make sure not something else going on.
No, this is not normal. I had tubes put in my ears when I was young. They are supposed to fix that problem. I could not tell you why he is having these infections, but I would check it out. Something is not right.
How did this turn out? We are in planning stages for tubes now at 11 months old.
