My oldest (13) has had them 7 times, (the last time seems to be working and my second oldest (7) has had them 3 or 4 times and the last set seem to be working. Why it took so many times we don't knhow but it's nothing to freak out about. He'll be irritable on the 1st day but after that he should have no problems!!1

My daughter has never had problems with ear infections, thank the Lord, but I did. I had ear tubes inserted seven times (four on left, three on right) and had my tonsils and adnoids removed. My hearing is bad because of the scarring caused by the infections, and I was diagnosed with a cholesteotoma on the left side last year, so I'm looking forward to two or more surgeries to remove that and reconstruct my ear.

Having ear tubes in is no problem at all. There's no pain afterwards. Your son might be a little cranky from the anesthesia, but that's about all. Just be sure not to get ANY water in his ears after the procedure.

Both my girls have had tubes and it is no big deal, and really not much recovery time. Both my girls seem to be doing better since they had their surgeries.

Hey M.,
My middle son who is now 8 had this done at 10 months also. He spent those first months hearing very little we found out later. The surgery is very simple and takes less than 30 minutes. The damage that is done having to wait for that surgery takes years to over come. My son has a learing disability due to the hearing loss in that time. You will be amazed at how well they hear after the have there tubes. Take extra care not to get water in them they get infected very easy. My son has had only 1 ear infection since having his ear tubes all those years ago. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

i am a 23 year old mom of twin boys that will be 3 in jan. the tubes are wonderful they had them put in in spring of 2005 and just again this past october. just a real quick in and out procedure. the only thing you may have to get ear plugs or something when giving a bath not to get water in his ears. but i can tell a difference right after the surgery. the first time they had them done from nov til march they had approx 10 ear infections and havent had one until recently right before they put the tubes back in. but since then they have been fine.

My son, who is now 13, had tubes twice. First when he was 12 months and second when he was 4. When the 2nd set of tubes were placed in, they also removed his tonsils and adenoids. He had very few ear infections for a while and has been healthy since the 2nd set. The surgery is very somple and does not cause soreness to the ears. They can't feel the tubes...HOWEVER my son did have a febrile seizure after we got home from the hospital. It was an isolated episode and happened because his fever shot up very quickly. He was fine afterwards, although we went ahead and had an EEG test done to be sure he wasn't epileptic. Results were totall normal and he hasn't had another seizure since. Good luck!!

I know this is late but mine had his in when he was 13mo. He's 22mo now and has only had one ear infection since the surgery. It's a little nerve racking to have to make sure no water gets in them at bathtime and such but aside from him not liking the hospital and throwing up on me from crying(he was scared) it went fine. The only problem i'm having now is he's 22mo like i said and aside from little words here and there he's not talking just babbling. I didn't want the tubes in in the 1st place my husband did and that is why. I feel they're hindering his speech and i'm considering having them removed(they're supposed to fall out on their own but sometimes they have to surgically remove them). That's my experience with it I hope it helps. Feel free to message me if you wanna talk or have anymore questions. ____@____.com

I have been through this procedure myself on more than one occassion. It is a simple procedure and it will help so much. It's hard anytime a little one has to go through any procedure. Hang in there, it will be worth it.

Both of my children had their first set of tubes when they were 6 mths old. My oldest (who is now 3 1/2) has had them twice now and my youngest (who is 11 mths old) only once. They seemed to work better for my youngest. All the tubes do is allow the ear to drain when they get fluid in them and this helps to not turn into an infection. I would say no recovery time - they were laughing and playing on the way home from the hospital! Good luck!

Ok i have been through many surgeries with my two year old to try and get his ears better. He suffered for one year with ear infections before we finally found a solution. We had tubes put in but all they did was help it drain. No antibiotics, home remedies, ear drops helped. Come to find out his adnoids and tonsils were also infected and this was keeping him from getting better. So after you get the tubes in and the infection does not go away i would sugggest getting them to check out the tonsils and sdnoids as well. I hated to have my son go through so much but he is like a new child now that he has had the tubes and tonsils and adnoids removed. Good luck and i hope they work well for you!

Hello M.,
I have a daughter who got tubes put in when she was about 10 to 11 months, due to continued problems w/ ear infections and anti-biotics that were NOT working for her. So, we decided it was the lesser of two evils getting the tubes, and I was very nervous and critical at the time. I must say the next couple days following the tubes put in, there was a noticable change in her, and it got much better for her overall health dramatically in the next couple months. I was stunned how much she responded to getting them put in, and since then she has had very little problems w/ her ears, maybe one or two infections and she is almost 3yrs. now. I think getting tubes for your child is a blessing if they suffer from ear infections and have to rely on anti-biotics that many times don't do much to help anyway. It is a serious surgery for your little one but also one that a trusted physician(ENT) w/ a lot of experience feels is a simple procedure now. Good luck w/ your decision and take one day at a time.

My daughter has had tubes put in twice. I was really nervous about it, but it was the best thing that could have happened. The only bad part was when she first woke up she screamed for about 30 minutes, but we were told that sometimes happens. The procedure was not a big deal and it helped her soooo much. Good Luck.

Ear tubes were great for my daughter. She has never had another ear infection, and the tubes came out on their own after 1 year. I have heard that tubes are good even if your child does continue to have ear infections because the infection will be able to "drain". I think the best thing you can do after getting the tubes is to keep water out of your child's ears. I recommend "ear buddies" and an "ear band". You can find these on the internet if you search under yahoo. The ear buddies are like silly putty and the ear band helps keep them in place. We used these during bathtime and swimming. Good luck, A.

PS My daughter screamed until we got home after surgery. I think it was a combination of the anesthesia and the fact that she could hear so much better, not to mention that she was just mad. You may notice your child's speech improve.

My son had them at 14 months. The surgery is no big deal. I didn't even finish reading my magazine article before he was done. A couple of tips: take a sippy cup with his favorite juice in it. He will probably be thirsty afterwards. If he uses a paci, you might want to take that too. Don't forget his favorite stufed animal to snuggle with afterwards. (They might even let him take his "friend" in with him). I know it is hard thinking they are putting your child under anasthesia. I was more upset than he was when they took him away but I tried not to let it show. Good luck!

My 6 month old just got tubes in 3 weeks ago. He had an ear infection for 2 months. We went through Penicillan, Omnicef and then 3 shots of another antibiotic. Nothing worked. He got tubes in his ears and seems to be doing ok. My husband is taking him to the ENT today for his 2 week check up as I write. I will let you know what happened. One thing I didn't know is that kids can still get ear infections with the tubes. I was suprised by that. Good luck.

My son had them at 5 mos. and then again about a year later (they had fallen out and he had problems again). He grew out of the constant infection thing by age 2 or so. The procedures were no problem at all. At 5 mos. he did cry a lot when he woke up but I was assured it was just a reaction to coming out of the anesthesia and not pain or anything. Once this passed (maybe 1/2 hour?) he was fine. When we did it again a year later he didn't do that. Yes, it solved the problem and the procedure is nothing to worry about.

My daughter had to get tubes in..... After tubes the ear infections are done with but it is hard when the child wakes up from the surgery. kylee cried for hours, not because of her ears but because of the surgery. I cried with her for the 2 hours=( So daddy ended up holding both of us...... but after that she will be all better.

Hey, my daughter had 3 sets of tubes in her ears. She did very well with them but the second set, one of them fell out and the other one was lodged in her ear so they had to remove it. The only problems she's had was when we went to New York the pressure in the airplane was horrible for her.

She's still had some ear infections in the one ear where the tube was lodged but other than that she's been doing quite well. She's 9 now and they were done when she was 1, 3 and 5 years old.

Just make sure you get the ear plugs for your baby whenever he's going to be in water like taking a bath/shower or going swimming.

Hope this helps.

My daughter had the procedure done when she was almost 2. It takes about 10 minutes, she woke up crying - probably b/c she wasn't too happy about being woken up from the deep sleep - we went home and she slept quite a bit for the rest of the day. The dr told us to give her Tylenol or Motrin to help her get used to the loudness of things now that she could hear, but other than that she was fine. The next she was back to normal. We had it done on a Friday and she went back to daycare the following Monday. For a few months afterwards she would cover her ears every now and then, but didn't get upset or anything. She has to wear earplugs during bath time and when she goes swimming; which I thought was going to be a huge pain, but she has always been really good about it. The best part is that she's had not one single ear issue since then. It was quick, painless and it was the best thing we ever did for her. It is the most common procedure done in children and I know that you will be so happy that you did it that you will wish that you would've done it sooner. Let me know how it goes and I wish you and your little one the best of luck!

Make sure to ask your doctor to look into your child's adenoids. My daughter had her tubes put in and adenoids removed at 10 months old. She's 5 now and hasn't had so much as cold since then. Sometimes enlarged adenoids are the cause of constant ear infections. Some signs to look for are snoring and sleep apnea when they stop breathing mometairly when they are sleeping. Feel free to email me if you want any more info..

Good Luck.
