I am in need of some help from moms that have babies on elecare formula. my DD has struggled with BM's, constipation, excess gas and stomach since she was born. I tried to breastfeed her but she would cry 24/7. I even did the elimation diet without any luck. Finally at 3 weeks of age I started her on simulac sensitive. She was like a new happy baby for about 3 weeks after that. Then she became severly constipated. our ped dr sugested flax oil in her bottles daily. That did get her to poop buy caused worse gas and tummy pain. Then she work up one day with a rash on her face. we stopped the fax oil and she started having normal soft bm's but still had alot of pain passing them. I finally took her to the ped gi. he checked her out and said everything looked ok but ordered an upper GI test for tomorrow and placed her on elecare. He did a test for blood in stool but she did not have any. He said that because I have a family history of milk allergy and lactose problems along acid reflex, that she could still hAVE a milk protein allergy. She started the elecare last night but will only drink 1 oz every 3 hrs. was drinking 3-4 ozof formula before. She also screems like she is in pain. i tried mixing just a LITTLE INTO HER OLD FORMULA but she starts to drink it and then tencese up in pain. is this normal for elecare? Dr said rash could be milk protein allergy or baby acne. help. I am thinking about keeping her on her old formula. she eats good (sometime she acts like she is in pain and will stop for awhile during the 5-8pm time), is gaining weight, but has baby acne/dry face rash and crys and strains with bm's alot. on both formulas she gets fussy and crys between 5-8 pm. poss. collic? she still has alot of happy play time the rest of the day. gassy on old formula but not as bad as the new formula. please help.

So What Happened?

We spoke with the GI and tried my daughter on Alimentum. After being on Alimentum for one week, her colic was gone and she starting pooping normal. This formula has made a hugh difference. I spoke with our insurance company and they cover part of the cost for the Alimentum. Thank you everyone for your wounderful responces.

Our first son was on elecare. Per the pedi GI dr - it tastes horrible, so most babies won't take to it right away. She suggested that we go to the health food store and get an all natural alcohol free vanilla extract and add a bit of that to the formula. Then gradually wean off of the vanilla extract. It worked for us.

Good luck mama.

Whatever you do keep her on the elecare!!! My daughter has severe food allergies and this formula saved her life and her pain! She had colic for four months (she was breast fed at the time and responded to everything I was eating poorly) keep trying with the elecare. they make a vanilla too. Also give her gripe water (found in health food stores) this has fennel for gas, and ginger and chamomile to sooth the tummy muscles. You are living my story that I had with my daughter! Email me with questions la.sweetpea at gmail .com there is also a product called minty ginger for little ones. Keep going with the elecare. If you cannot afford it, wic can help (women, infants and children support group)

My niece was on it and she did fine, but I couldn't hold her because it made her smell sooooo bad. I would try coconut milk instead. That's what they have her on now and she is doing fantastic. Ask your doctor.

Ask your Dr if you can try Alimentum formula (by similac). My son was finally diagnosed as protein allergies. In my case, he could only take my breast milk and this (expensive) formula, but it worked wonders for his issues, which sound like your daughter. This was 6 1/2 years ago and I don't know if elecare was avail.

Edit: wanted to add my son had stomach issues and bad eczema and he slowly grew out of it. I offer that as a look into the future that mostly this will not be a life long problem.

My son has a condition called Eosinophilic Esphogitis (EoE or EE for short). Your explanation of your daughter's symptoms sound like EoE. I'm glad the GI is going an upper gi. Make sure they also do biospies because an upper gi with biospy is the ONLY current way to diagonsis EoE.
As far as not taking the EleCare, you can see if she will take Neocate. Some kids do better on one versus the other. They are "cousin" formulas (kinda like the difference between a Similac and an Enfamil, do the same job just made by different companies). My son won't take EleCare. He will only take Neocate Jr tropical flavor. He is 4 and was diagonsed with EoE when he was 2. Neocate currently makes 50% of his diet. Some EoE patients are completely formula dependent.

My dd1 was on elecare. She had gi bleeding from milk protein allergy when I was nursing her. We tried Neocate for a few months but she did better on elecare. My dd did not have pain so much just crazy amounts of barfing! Like 20+ times a day on 30mg of prevacid. I thickened all feeds with rice starting at 2 months, and all it did was make her blow up like a balloon she was so chubby! And it did not help at all. I would not do that again. Have you tried dr browns bottles? My dd had to be on miralax while on elecare, but when I started solids, the fruits really helped.
