ER Visit Kidney Pain, No Answers

I have had a nasty cold for a few weeks now, and eventually it progressed to what I believe was bronchitis. I was coughing up yellow mucous and had that deep rattly cough. I kind of waited it out, took mucinex and hoped it would get better. During one bought of coughing two days ago, I had a weird sharp twinge in my waist. I thought hmmm... maybe I pulled a muscle? Then yesterday I developed some burning upon urination and kind of dismissed that too. A few hours later I had distinct pain in my lower left back, that radiated toward my groin. If I pushed on my lower left back it hurt. It felt like a deep achy kind of pain. So I decided to go to the ER thinking that perhaps I had a UTI that had turned into a kidney infection. So they did a urinalysis and ran some bloodwork. The tap test for Kidneys did not hurt, but if you pushed on that lower left area it did. Also if you push on my groin area it hurt quite a bit. They talked about waiting until the results came back before doing anything else. So the results came back fine. Nothing showed up in the bloodwork, and nothing in the urinealysis. So they sent me home. They said maybe I had a virus, and gave me Tylenol 3. I left with the same pain, they had even given me an iv while I was there with pain meds, but it didn't touch the pain. What should I do? The pain is a bit better today, but it really scares me that it could happen again. I googled mucinex and found out that a side affect can be kidney stones. But could I have had kidney stones with negative bloodwork, and a negative tap test? I wish they had done an ultrasound or something....Anyone else experience anything like this?

Also, I did ask if they thought it could be my ovary or something and they said no. (I am not sure what they based this on). The one doctor had talked about doing a chest X ray to rule out pneumonia, but the other doctor said no after he listened to my lungs with his stethescope. There were two doctors, one I assume was an intern of sorts. She seemed concerned, and suggested the X ray and possibly and MRI, but then I think the other doctor said no. Also no antibiotics due the fact that the bloodwork and urinalysis was fine.

What can I do next?

I would do a followup with my PM Doc. There are alot of funky things going around right now & I had the basic same thing not long ago, my Doc didn't even see me, she simply ordered me a 'max pac' a three day supply of, Zithromax that will pretty much take care of that upper respitory junk!

As for kidney stones, I have NEVER had them but my EX used to get them & I can tell you this....IF YOU HAD A/ANY KIDNEY STONES YOU WOULDN'T BE GUESSING ABOUT IT THEY ARE HORRID WITH PAIN & you can see the blood in your urine w/o a test, they are nasty little buggers!!! UGH!!!

I am wondering if you have been keeping yourself hydrated enough? If you have been so sick & not forcing liquids your kidneys will suffer & give you grief.

I STILL say to call your PM Doc, it's a sorry state to go to the ER & have to listen to two Docs disagree in front of you about what could/could not be wrong with you, doesn't exactly make for the patient being confident about the quality of care or the answer as to what is wrong! :(

Hope you feel better soon!

I'm not sure about the pain you are having, but the cough I would be worried about. My whole family is getting over pneumonia and I currently have it right now. My kids Dr. could NOT hear it when they listened to their lungs. But they had the high fever and cough. We had an x ray done on both of them and it showed up there. My husband had it but his dr. could hear it. I had it, and again, dr. could not hear it. Just gave me antibiotics because of my family having it. Finished antibiotics and it got worse a few days later. Fever came back and felt like passing out all the time. I'm now on a 2nd antibiotic 3rd day of it and I am just NOW starting to get some energy back. I would have an x ray done just to be on the safe side. Pneumonia is not something to mess around with. I hope you feel better soon!

It sounds like to me that you may have a hernia. They are pretty painful and you can do that by coughing hard. I think talking to the doc would not hurt but taking it easy and taking the meds could also make it feel so much better too.

Added: If you have a hernia, that CAN end up being life-threatening. Some people can go with a hernia for years with no problems, but all of a sudden, you're life can be at risk. Hernias don't go away untreated - but they can be like time bombs. You should find out for sure if you have one so that you know. Just like kidney stones - forewarned is forearmed. Having this knowledge about your body will help doctors if you end up having an emergency. And of course, the best time to figure this stuff out is BEFORE an emergency arises.

Original:
I'd go to the doctor tomorrow and ask for an ultrasound of your kidney. If I were the doctor, I'd also want to look at your ovaries.

Did they listen to your chest? How are your lungs? Are you on antibiotics?

Do you drink a lot of tea? Do you eat ice cream often? Tea and ice cream can actually cause kidney stones.

More questions than answers. Go to your regular doctor and map out a plan.

Good luck!

Hi K.,
It *could* still be you severely pulled some muscles coughing: that's still not ruled out. I had bronchitis so bad once, the coughing left my chest so sore, I thought I had broken some ribs!

You must have been sick for sure to pull your groin! Until you stop coughing from now on, try hugging a pillow every time you cough to stabilize your trunk muscles. Tylenol 3 will not necessarily relieve muscle pain.

I have had kidney stones: there is no letting up from that pain: it is excruciating, you can't find a comfortable position, and it doesn't get worse (or better) by pushing anywhere.

Take good care.

Not a kidney stone.
Those things are worse than labor - I had one a little over a year ago, and trust me, if you had one - you, and everyone in the ER would have known. They present with severe pain, the kind that makes you throw up, and usually blood in the urine, and make you think you are dying.

It does sound like you may have pulled something coughing. Weird things can happen when we cough. Also, could be a sciatic nerve - that runs through the lower back down through the buttocks and can cause pain up and down the area.

Try an ice pack, and sit, stand and lay down with your hips aligned and straight to relieve any pressure.

Other thought, are you ovulating? (yeah, tmi, sorry) But that can cause weird groin pains sometimes.

Do go get checked by your primary physician tomorrow - it is always better to be safe.

Feel better
Hugs

Could be that you strained you siatic nerve. its around the same location and hurt like ...... when it flares up.

It's also possible that you are slighly dehydrated from your bronchitis. That too will cause kidney pain.

I would go for a second opinion or at least see your own physician for a follow up. Good luck!

Kidney stones can be very painful, but not always.
It depends on the size of the stone.
Some are the size of a grain of sand.
Some are more prickly/sharp than others and it's possible it scraped up a ureter on the way out (it takes a little time for a scrape to heal up) but not enough to to bleed.
It couldn't hurt to drink lots of water (you're suppose to keep your fluids up when you take Mucinex) and keep your urine as diluted as possible.
See your primary care doctor soon as possible.

I'm almost positive it's not a kidney stone. I've had all types, small ones like grains of sand, large ones about 1 centimeter in diameter. The pain will not get worse from pressing on the area. It is possible for the pain to come and go if your stone gets lodged and dislodged. This happened to me one time, so I was very confused. Turned out the stone was shaped somewhat like a cone.

The severe pain comes from fluids being blocked. That's why it can get very, very painful very quickly. If a stone gets lodged and is very big, and annoying pain that you think might be a UTI becomes an intense pain where you can't stand up straight to walk. This can happen in less than an hour, as I can attest to last Labor Day weekend.

Sorry, didn't mean to talk about kidney stones for so long. Rest assured, that is not what you have.

I would make an appointment with your regular doctor and just try to present all your symptoms. He/she will have more time to talk to you and hopefully get you on the road to recovery.

Hmm... I'm having some of the same problems. Had a cold or allergies for about 4 weeks. I was given antibiotics in case it was a sinus infections (I had the same rattling cough) and felt better a few days later though I still coughed on occasion. I took the Mucinex prior to the antibiotics. Anyway, a few days after I was feeling better and stopped coughing I got a pain in my left side in my ribs. It hurt so bad I had to brace myself if I were to sneeze, cough or breath deeply. I thought it was a pulled muscle from all the prior coughing. Now it has been three weeks and feels way better but I still notice it. Someone mentioned pleurisy. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It is only on my one side.

O geez, that's great. They say "MAYBE" you have a virus. And then have the nerve to prescribe something based on "maybe". Give me strength.

Did they manage to suggest that due to your coughing you maybe have strained a muscle or put your back out of whack? One thing I would suggest is go to a chiropractor because coughing can do that. It's one of those instances where a reaction can cause a reaction. Your coughing, i.e., caused a disruption in your lower back. Once the back is off balance all sorts of discomfort can occur.

As far as kidney stones, I don't think they develop this quickly. And I would THINK the urinalysis would've detected that. What you can do, if you're prone to them, is get some homeopathic pellets. If you live in the Detroit metro area, get to Ann Arbor to Castle Remedies. I would suggest cantharis, aconite, and thuja. I have used these for bladder issues, on my cat (don't let that bother you because it's for humans too) with success. My daughter in law had some kidney stone issues too and used the aconite, with a LOT of relief!
Good luck, and hope you feel better soon!
