Ever Heard of Citrus Allergies/intolerance?

Though we know our 3 year old son is allergic to wheat/gluten, nuts, dairy, and eggs, drinking juice seems to literally tear up his bottom. So, we do not give it to him but deal with the after effects if given to him by accident, (ie: someone else). He is slowly potty-training- but- we think it's the high amount of (natural) sugar in the juice/fruit chews that he cannot have, as well as citrus of any kind. (Dried fruits/bananas do work though). Has anyone ever heard of this officially?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your responses- seems this is a common occurence afterall. Thanks for the tip of giving him fiber or fat if he should get it accidentally again- still working on potty training, got a medicated cream, switched to cloth diapers, and we'll see a different allergist next week. Peace~

I have heard that citrus can cause allergies - in fact, I was told to wait to give my babies citrus after other fruits.
Both of my daughters have the same problem with fruit juice. No one believed me, including more than one pediatrician, but they always had the worst diapers and rashes after a juice box (100% juice). They could eat fruit constantly and not get the same reaction. I have found that as long as I limit their juice intake to one cup that is watered down they are fine. I also don't let them have it (unless it's a party or something) after 2pm because I don't want them to have upset stomachs at night.

It may be a citrus allergy and for those that are more allergic or are allergic to the processed products such as juice boxes, etc. It may also be the preservatives or other ingredients that they add to the product that are causing an allergic reaction as well. With fresh fruit, the same way with the pesticide/insecticide or even the fertilizer they use. Just my 2 cents. :) Hope your child will get stronger and outgrow his allergies soon.

My husband has a citrus allergy. When he was a baby he would get a rash on his bum anytime he had citrus. It took awhile to discover citrus was the cause. As an adult, if he sips OJ or any other citrus product he'll get a cold sore in his mouth. No rash anymore just in case you were wondering! That's the extent of his citrus allergy...he obviously isn't dangerously allergic. Poor guy hates to see me drink OJ...he gets very jealous!

I have heard of people with citrus allergies. So that is possible. I also know that apple juice has a high pesticide content. Have you noticed a difference with organic juice?

Really fruit juice isn't a good choice anyways, as sugar should be balanced with either fat or fiber to slow down absorption (spiking blood sugar). I only let my kids have it with herbs to help get them down.

Can you do coconut? Coconut milk and coconut flour might be a great alternative for him.

My daughter gets diarhea when she drinks fruit juice which will give her a rash right away. It's when people give it to her out of the bottle or the juice box. But watered down halfway with water she is fine.

My husband is allergic to fruits, Fresh fruits only if they are canned or cooked he is fine. There are a couple things that it could be. The citric acid, the pesticides.

I now it is hard expessially with the list of allergies you have already listed. Have you tried cooked fruit(canned)or organic?

My sister could not give her kids straight citrus juices. She had to do at least a half water half juice mixture of they got horrendous diahrea and a painful, red, hot bottom. She thought is was from the acid in citris. My girls have never had a problem but they get very little juice even now at ages 7 and 2 yo. Try watering it down and only give it to him after he eats something. Maybe the combo of water and food will break it down enough it won't bother him. A.

Hello-

I don't have any advice for you but I wanted to say that I am sympathetic for what you must be going through with all the food allergies your son has! My daughter only has a peanut allergy (that we know of) and it is still very hard to deal with. Good luck to you!

N.,

Citrus, when I was first nursing my son, tore up his bottom in the same way.

He still needs vitamin c; you can cut it down some. Hopefully he will grow out of it soon.

It's not the sugar - it's the acid. I don't know if there are lower acid fruits - maybe peach - you can try. I know a little taste of orange goes a long way, so have you tried a tablespoon of orange mixed with other fruit juice?

Good luck!

I have - in fact I am allergic to anything that has a high dose of citrus acid (ie. orange juice, grapefruit juice, punch, etc) and has been processed. Its weird, I'll break out into hives and get (what I can only call it as) and extreme case of Ezcema all over my body, but only if its been processed. I can eat the fruits in moderation, however I can't eat too many Fla. oranges (again weird)- and usually with some over-the-counter creams and avoidances of the juices I am back to normal. I usually stick to juices like Apple, Cranberry, Banana or Grape. And as far as my citric acid intake I usually take an over-the-counter vitamin to supplement. I do know a lot of my family members from my mother's side (including my mother) have the same issues. I hope this helps.

My son and I are both gluten intolerant. He is 4.5 now. I remember when he was younger he used to respond to tomato sauce and citrus. I think the acid in the boxed OJ is greater b/c of the sugar content. Do you cut the juices with water? And maybe give the juice with food. His face would even get a rash during eating tomato sauce. He outgrew it as he got older. It seemed like he outgrew it b4 he was 2, but he was potty trained by 18 months, so we did not have the diaper rash issue.

Hope this helps. I know just having a gluten allergy can be hard. Good luck with that. There is a good site with some gluten free restaurants in the city and other areas in the tri-state area, ie PIZZA and CHINESE! It is called celiacshicks.com in case you have not heard of it. Having a mistake can cause a lot of problems if you have celiac. I know from personal experience.

Hope this helps.

sounds to me that the "root" of the problem is either a vitamin c reaction...not so much the food but what's in it or how the molecule in it is structured...I don't know how open you are to eastern medicine but if you look up naet...online...it's kind of east meets west...my best friend and her family have been using the system for about 6months and the results are amazing...her son who was allergic to milk and nuts is no longer allergic to the, she was allergic to melon and no longer is...on the website it gives lots of information and even doctors in your area...I'm looking into it for my son who can't have milk...it's a long process of basically re introducing everything to your body but it worked for my friend and I'm open to it...

I developed an allergy to citrus/citric acid about 20 years ago. My face would swell up and my throat would start to close. Bebedryl did the trick to get me back to normal back then. Now, I read labels, and drink low acid orange juice. So far I have not had a recurrance of this problem. The farther down citric acid is on a list of ingredients, the less there is in a product and it seems to be safe.
