Orange Juice Too Soon?

My son is going to be ten months in a few days.....and i was curious to see if it was too early to give him orange juice. Ive given him other juices watered down before, but i wanted him to try out orange juice in his sippy cup for breakfast. As far as i know - he didnt have an upset stomach - but he did have a pretty full muddy diaper shortly therafter eating. Is it too soon to give him orange juice? Could it be to acidic for his tummy? Is this kinda of like cow's milk...shall i wait till he's a year old?

What can I do next?

I have an 8 month old and I found this website that gives some good suggestions as to when to give certain types of foods: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/forbiddenbabyfood.htm

I think it's pretty good and it mimics the things that I've already been told by her pediatrician so that is comforting.

It says to wait to give any citrus or acidic foods until after 1 year.

Hi K.,
I think the only juice that you are definitely NOT supposed to give a baby under 1 is apple juice. The best kind of juice for an infant is white grape juice. It is easy to digest and not as acidic as OJ. You don't have to water it down either and my boys (8 & 10 now) used to love the taste. They make juices just for babies too if you go into the baby food isles but they are a bit costly sometimes. Just buy just regular white grape or even white peach grape. These are very mild and taste good!

Hope he likes it!

K.,
I would wait on the citrus fruit juices. There are so many other options to introduce him too that have vitamin C. Try mangoes. Or pear juice. Apricot, peach juice, etc. It takes a lot of oranges to make a small glass of juice. That's a lot of sugar.
Good Luck,
D.

I'm going to agree with Tracy F. There is no need to even give him juice. A lot of people think it's healthy because it's from fruit, but it's actually not, it's liquid sugar. Giving them the fruit is the best choice, I used to use those mesh feeders which work great too if you are worried about choking. But I would stay away from citrus yet anyhow. Here's a good little bit of info in a nutshell: http://www.iparenting.com/sears/answers/fruitjuice.htm

Yes, wait till he's one :-)
Some kids do fine but it is recommended to hold off on citrus until age one.

All juices have lots of sugar. Many preschools and daycares don't even allow juice. When my daughter was your son's age, I felt that she was still so young....she didn't even know what juice was at that age anyway. Since I was the one controlling what she would eat and drink, I stuck to milk and water. She's 4 1/2 now and rarely drinks juice.....maybe once every couple of months.

Hi. I'm chiming in against giving him juice at all. Why give him the sugar and risk upsetting his stomach and allergies? All the kids I know weren't resistant to eating fruit and drinking juice later on, so there is no real reason to give it to him.

It migth depend on the kid, but I think it might be too acidic. My daughter got wicked diaper rashes from orange juice. and wet acidic poo. even a rash on the face. I had no idea oranges weren't good for babies then. I thought she had a llergy, but at 16 months did fine with limited amounts of orange juice, so I think it is just the acidicness. I would hold off. Oragne juice isn't that important, is it?

I don't think I would give an infant any citrus. I do know that in my 30's I developed an "intolerance" to orange juice. It makes me queasy and bloated. I always need to take "Tums" or "Rolaids" after I drink any.

I've never liked eating plain oranges or tangerines or anything like that, but small amounts of lemon and lemonade don't bother me.

At your son's age, the only clues you have are the diaper output, and it doesn't sound good. I wouldn't give citrus to him again until he's older.

Hi K.,
Kids are much more likely to develop allergies to citrus juices, such as orange juice, than they are to other juices. For that reason, pediatric experts such as docs at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital recommend waiting until your child is at least one-year old before introducing oranges and other citrus fruit. The hospital's website is a great source of information for feeding questions. So, yes, treat OJ like cow's milk and wait until he's one.

I'd give a very small amount and see. Our daughter would get horrible diaper rashes after any citrus juice, so I continue to limit it even at age 2.

Just make sure you dilute it with water. I wouldn't give him too much of orange juice to start out. Give him about 1oz of water and 1oz of orange juice and to see if he tolerates it. If he tolerate it very well, gradually increase the amount but make sure you dilute it the same amount of each. He should just do fine.

My daughter is 16 months and I still have not given her any citrus. I think my doctor said that Citrus fruits/juices are very acidic and can upset their stomache. My friends son (same age) can't tolerate oranges yet (vomit/diahhrea), so that is probably another reason I have waited. My daughter doesn't really drink any kind of juice anyway, just whole milk and water.

Hi K.,

Our doc said to wait until 1 year for all citrus fruits and juices. I agree that you can skip giving juice altogether. Our 9 month old has had juice very few times... and it was from Grandma! :)
