Excema & Swimming

Hi Mamas
My almost 7 month old has severe excema and I was meaning all along to ask my dermatologist if it's ok to put him in the pool this summer. (of course after a 3 month wait, I forgot) We really want to him to become used to the water(he loves bath time) but I heard that it could dry out his skin even more! That's the last thing I want as we are just now getting it under control and learning which products we can and can't use on his skin.

What can I do next?

Hi L., I was wondering what dermatolgist you are using I have been searching for one. I have a 10 month old and he is suffering with excema and I keep taking him to his regular doctor and it seems not to be clearing up. Do you have any suggestions?

L.,
My now 2 year old has had eczema since he was 3 months old. You need to keep him moisturized and use cotton fabrics for clothes and sheets (polyester and others keep moisture in and irritate eczema). As for the pool, chlorine can do one of two things: make the eczema better (dries it up) or make it worse (creating more dry skin). Last year, my son had very little reaction to the pool; this year, however, we are experiencing really dry skin EVERYWHERE!! I am not going to prevent or refuse my son time in the pool, he loves it! I will try keeping his skin moisturized before we enter the pool (with creamed sun screan- no spray); during (more sunscrean) and after- quick rinse off and lotion. I have been using Arbonne Baby products on my son for two years, and have been effective at keeping the eczema under control for small break outs (love, love love the baby oil!!). We only use Arbonne sunscrean. I also use Kiels Centellena (SP?) serum for extra moisture.
I hope that helps,
If you'd like to try Arbonne products, please send me a private message!

Blessings,
S.

I agree with some of the other responses, but also think you should rinse or bath him right after being in the pool.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

my son and i both have very bad excema! My daughter has a mild case of it!
We ended up getting our own outdoor above ground pool this year. But the water in the pool should be fine. It has helped my sons excema and mine to get out in the sun and the water then as soon as he gets out we hit the shower and get clean then out to put on thick baby cream and hes ready to go again! It has helped a lot this year having the pool and sun so handy!
Hope it helps!

L. J,

I would recommend Arbonne's Baby Care Products. If used correctly they will work. I will be glad to send you information or a sample to try if you want to check out my website www.healthynutrition.myarbonne.com.

I know when my son has gone in the pool it made his eczema worse. I think its the chemicals in the pool. Thats my experience anyway. Hes only three and hasn't gone in the pool yet this summer. But each time the previous Summers that was the case.

I would recommend Arbonne Baby Care products for his ezcema. After swimming I would recommend Arbonne detox wash, it is gentle enough for your baby and will remove the harsh chemicals pool water can leave on your skin. www.betsycampbell.myarbonne.com

Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Treatment (comes in box of 5 packets) bath soak right after being in the pool has worked just fine for us. Wal-mart brand works just as well but does not disolve in water as easily as aveeno.

I have excema and the pool water always helps it dry up. After a couple of days in the pool and sun, it disappears and doesn't come back till November.

I am a mommy who has eczema. I am not sure what the doctor would say but i know for me that after i get out of the pool my skin is dry but i take a shower and wash off the chlorine. I know that some sun is good for eczema. I know for me my skin does better when i get some sun. I know without a doubt that salt water does miracles for eczema soooo if you plan on going to the beach go for a stroll with him in the salt water. Have a great day.

The pool always helps my eczema. I also use Melaleuca's Renew bath oil and lotion! Even in the winter it works. It is amazing stuff. It also helps that I use natural cleaners, soaps and I am on some awesome vitamins. Send me an email and I would love to visit with you about this. Melaleuca is having a special until June 30. I look forward to speaking with you.

My son and several friends and their kids all have found that the pool water actually helped the excema! Hope it does the same for your son. I know how helpless you can feel not knowing what to do for them!

He can most definitely swim just make sure you rise him with clean water and apply lots of lotion as soon as he's finished!
