Exclusively Breastfed Baby with Severe Eczema

I know eczema can be caused by a food allergy and am wondering what I can do with my diet to help my 6 month old son. I have tried eliminating wheat, dairy, gluten, and soy to no avail. Still haven't tried eggs and nuts. I also wonder if I eliminated them for a long enough time. I feel completely out of control with this and hate having to use steroids. I've tried numerous natural treatments and none seem to help. I am also considering taking him to a naturopathic physician, but don't know of any good ones in the Sacramento area. I would be grateful for any help.

What can I do next?

Dear J.,
I have been in your shoes many times. I have 7 kids and 4 have allergies. Go to the health food store and get the powdered acidophilous for children. Each time you nurse put some on your finger and put it on his tongue. This will help his digestion.
Next eliminate dairy, eggs and acidic foods, like tomatoes and salad dressing. Chart down what you are eating and what his response is. I found that whatever I ate hit my kids the very next feeding. Eliminated it and they should be okay.
I was trained by a naturopath in finding allergies and getting rid of them. I am happy to help if you like. I have most of the common allergins in my kit.
Blessings,
Stac

Lori Gilbert in Rancho Cordova and near Franklin is an acupunturist, NO needles used for this however and she practices natural allergy ellimination. She has helped my son with his multiple allergies. Her website is diamond-integration.com. I highly value what she did for our son.

Best of everything.

Hi J.,

I had the same issue with my last child. I tried all kinds of different things to no avail. What finally did work for me is I added a whole food fruit and veggie supplement to my diet called Juice Plus+. You can check out the studies that have been done on it at www.StudiesOnJuicePlus.com It is 17 different fruits and veggies in a capsule, chewable or gummie form. It made such a difference for me that I had to put my whole family on it. We are going on 5 years now and it's the best thing I have eveer done for the health of my family. In addition to adding JP+ I also tried many different topical treatments for my sons eczema. What seemed to work really well was extra virgin olive oil. I would rub it on his skin before bed at night. I truly believe the JP+ helped balance out his immune system since eczema is caused by an out of balance immune system and the olive oil help heal his dry, dry skin patches.
Hope this helps and good luck to you!

L.

My daughter has severe eczema and you need to be careful about soaps. Also, when she has an outbreak, water is very drying to the skin so we decrease full baths to every 3 days. Shea butter is amazing at healing and keeping the skin moist to decrease it, I ordered a bunch of 100% shea butter several years ago after another mom recommended it and I still have it. It's amazing stuff.

Hi J.,

My name is J. Simpson, IBCLC, CIIM and I am a local Lactation Conultant in the Sac area. I work with many moms dealing with what you are on and I'd love to talk with you to see how I can help. (no charge!) You can call me at ###-###-#### or go to my website to learn more about me www.breastfeedingnetwork.net.

I have been through the elimination diet before and ended up having to be dairy free for quite a while as my 2nd son was highly allergic to dairy (resulting in several symptoms including eczema) so I have an idea what you are dealing with personally as well as professionally.

The key to elimination diets is to eliminate the foods 100% (which can be a challenge!) for a minimum of 2 weeks. There is some debate as to if this is too long or long enough for all foods we eat to clear out of our bodies...so 2 wks is a good place to start. You have to read labels so as not to accidentally eat hidden sources of dairy, wheat, etc.

Eczema can be caused by outside sources as well - soaps, detergents for clothing, lotions, etc. The topical steroids can relieve baby's discomfort tremendously and while I am 100% with you on the desire to not need to use them, continue to do so until you have tracked down the offender/s.

I may have a line on a couple of naturopathic Dr.s. Give me a call so we can talk and I'll find those names for you.

I also have a mommy group that meets every Friday Morning at 10. We'd love to have you join us! Many of the moms in the group have been through similar situations as yours...the support could be very helpful for you. And all your kids are welcome... We are meeting at my home this morning as the air quality is not safe for the little ones (or big ones for that matter!) and if you'd like to join us please give me a call - ###-###-####.

Good luck and take care! You are not alone...

Warmly,
J.

Try elimaniting milk on your diet - eczema can be caused by a milk allergy. You need to eliminate the food for at least two weeks to ensure see a difference. My granddaughter's eczema went away once my daughter switched to soy milk. You my also want to put cetaphil on the baby's skin so it won't itch and start to heal.
Good Luck
