Rash on Face

My 20 month old has always had sensitive skin, and a few patches of Eczema here and there. About a month ago she developed a small rash on her cheek, near the corner of her mouth and it won't go away. We just moved and haven't established a doctor yet and are also in the process of establishing new insurance, so I haven't taken her to see anyone about it. It is a circle (smaller then a dime), very red, and most of the time it is dry & flakey. Every once in a while it gets a little weepy though. It doesn't seem to respond to ointments or creams, in fact it seems to aggravate it. Over the past month it has started to go away, but then it comes back. It has not spread, no one else in our family has caught it, and it doesn't seem to bother her. Does anyone know what this might be or what I can do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! You ALL have been SOOOOO helpful. I have so many ideas floating around in my head now that I don't know where to start!! But I TRULY appreciate the help!!!! I had a tube of Nystatin from when she had a yeast infection as an infant, so I tried that last night & again this morning. I think maybe it is yeast because it appears to be drying up. I don't know for sure though because it will take a few more days if thats really what it is. You all have given me so many great ideas about natural products to try though, I probably should start looking more into going natural. I'm sure that there are many things I could cut out of her diet (and out of my household) that would help eliminate her skin problems. You guys are the best!

My middle child was born with it all over her face and backs of her legs and ankles. I tryed everything with her and nothing worked. I felt really bad for her since I know how it feels. I get it on my legs every time I get preg. This last time I got it really bad and tryed the new Cortizone-10 with aloe. One night after her bath I had the Thought to try it on her face. I am proud to say that after 2mths it's all gone. I did learn to put it on her after she went to sleep though so she would leave it alone. Hope it helps!

If it is Eczema, or even if not possibly, you might try an ointment called Resinol. Wal-green's and other pharmacy stores carry it over the counter. It has been the one thing that helps me with treating acute eczema flare-ups.

I would treat for ringworm for a few days to see if it fades. If it does then continue treatment for about 10 days. Just get some over the counter athletes foot cream and apply it lightly to the area until blended in. It won't hurt her if it's not ringworm and if it is it will get rid of it!
Good Luck.
If it doesn't work or you don't feel comfortable treating it yourself I would make it a priority to get to a doctor.

Hi V.,

Why don't you pop into a minute clinic at a local drugstore and see what the nurse/PA has to say about the rash? If it is a fungal infection the steroid creams will just make it worse, if it needs steroids then the anti-fungal will make it worse. And insurance isn't that important at a miniute clinic.

My kids have very sensative skin and we use eucerine (tub) on their flaky bits. It works really

"Weepy" is typical of eczema--my second son had similar issues. Try to keep the area dry and moisturized (vaseline helps). Are you using steroid creams? If she had patches of eczema before I'm sure your former pedicatrican has prescribed this to you or you may need stronger steroid creams if the ones you're using aren't working. The steroid cream should clear it up and vaseline should keep it moisturized while locking out excess moisture. If her cheeks are damp often, that exacerbates the condition. Also, get her tested for food allergies--redness on the cheeks more often than not is indicative of some type of allergy. Since you don't have insurance, you can try taking things out of her diet and see how it affects her--take one thing out at a time and watch her for a week to look for a change. We gave my son cow's milk for months before we saw the redness on his cheeks (developed over time) and realized he had an allergy towards it. Other sources are: stress (ie. from a new environment--it can cause the flare ups), detergent you are using (try not using any--just hot water), heat (make sure she's cool), her blankets/clothes (try using cotton only, no polyester). Sorry probably info overload but a lot of these tips came from my sister and pediatrican since they've both dealt with eczema extensively. Good luck!

My daughter had the same thing happen at the age of 2. A small eczema patch on her chin near the corner of her mouth that appeared seemingly out of nowhere and would not go away. I tried multiple different creams and nothing helped. A month later, she had an episode of hives and then upper lip swelling. Turns out she had a food allergy to cashews, confirmed by a skin test. In hindsight, the eczema path started soon after introducing cashews, and completely resolved as soon as we eliminated them from her diet. In learning more about food allergies, I've learned that eczema is often times the first sign of food sensitivities or allergies. Is there a new food you've recently introduced?

Sounds like either fungal or eczema. Try an antifungal cream or 1% hydrocortizone cream. One is bound to help. If is important to keep it dry if you can... that is why it won't go away. Keep a soft bib on her and pat dry with it very often. If it seems to get infected, then use neosporin.

Good Morning V..

My son had this, exactly as you described. The dr prescribed some ointnment that would clear it up. I don't recall what it was. For my son, when he had spaghetti it was worse. we thought it was the tomato sauce. When he was 13 he was diagnosed with Celiac, which is Gluten (wheat, rye, barley) intolerance. His symptoms for this were throwing up, & diarrhea about once a month, no other flu symptoms. Once he threw up, he was fine again. I tell you this, because when he went gluten free, the sore on his face never came back. Until he ate gluten. When you find a doctor, (I have a good one in Gresham) have tested for Celiac. If she is negative, that's good, just keep in mind that it can be latent, which means it may show up more dramatically if she has a traumatic event. (Ashton's came on after my father died.) Until you can get her tested, consider leaving out wheat products, bread, pasta, baked goods, & serving more rice, potatoes, corn. There are yummy rice pastas, & crackers. Wild Oats, & Trader Joe's have nice selections. Bob'd Red Mill provides gluten free flours & cereals. Creamy rice is nice, & a lot like cream of wheat. Perhaps if you start her out with less gluten, she will not have to go "gluten free" strictly later on.

God bless
A. V

My son used to have the exact same thing ...sensitive skin and always droolled! He had ecsema on his cheeks and around his mouth...eventually had the same type of spot you are describing! It was empitigo(sp) and it didn't respond to anything over the counter. We had to use a mild steroid ointment called ellidel which cleared it up great in about 2 weeks! I also found for his ecsema the thing that worked best was cetaphil crm.
Hope this helps!

Hi V.,

Eczema is usually related to a gluten intolerance....wheat oats and barley elimination should help....the topical stuff doesn't help because it is being produced by the body to eliminate the inflammation caused in the gut (I am a naturopath, so take this as a naturopathic perspective)...my daughter had this, as well as a number of my patients. Best of luck, T. D

I'm not sure that it's the same thing my son had who is the same age as your daughter but it sounds almost identical to his symtoms. He also had a few dry patches on his legs and arms. I'd heard that wheat can be a big allergen and cause skin and intestinal problems so I thought I'd try taking wheat out of his diet for a few weeks to see what happened. It cleared up right away. Now his skin is soft and smooth everywhere.
I give him spelt bread which is just as good as wheat bread and there are so many cereal and snacks made of corn and rice it's pretty easy to switch. It might work for you!

I recently discovered that I am gluten intolerant. One of the effects of gluten in your system can be the onset of exzema. Being gluten intolerant is having the inability to process wheat, rye, oats and barley. The auto ammune disease associated with it is called ciliacs disease. Not life threatening but wow what a difference in the way you feel not eating it. Lactose intolerance also goes hand in hand with this.

Dose she eat a lot of acidic foods, such as tomatoes or citrus? Are you seeing any issues at the "other end"?

If it's a food issue, versus a skin infection, you could probably expect to see a diaper rash or some irritation on her little bum. You can always experiment with her diet by eliminating suspect foods and see what happens.

I have the same thing on my leg. We thought it was ringworm and somehow I had caught it from my son or the kids at daycare. It's a perfect circle. Doc said it's just eczema (sp?). Just in case it was a fungus of some sorts I put miconozil on it, and the inflamation went down substantially. Because the spot is so close to her mouth, you don't want to put that on it. Try plain yogurt. Good luck!

I have and my son also have eczema when he was a baby he used to have it on his face we switched him to a soy formula and it seemed to help as he has gotten older (now 12)he still has it but not on his face. it tends to be worst during the winter months try cetaphil lotion or aveeno we also use tar oil base products exposure to the sun helps also avoid to much citric acid drinks ex.orange juice also any kind of lotions or creams with perfumes
some laundry soaps iritate the skin if they have dyes or perfumes in them I use dye and fragrance free laundry soap and double rinse his clothes. most likely it is just a small patch of eczema and it might be something she will always have a battle with if it gets worse try looking into taking her to a dermatolgist when you are able to find a dr. maybe allergy testing might help some eczema is brought on by mild allergic reactions. hope this is helpful good luck

Just to be sure, I would definitely have her checked for food allergies. So many little ones are allergic to things like dairy and soy. It's important to find out, because IF it is allergies, the eczema is only showing whats happening on the outside. On the inside there could be scar tissue building up and other things happening. I have 3 friends completely eliminate eczema from their lives. My friend Jane's 2 1/2 year old son had the same patches on her face...she got rid of the chemicals in her house and buys Melaleuca products. Brock's eczema was gone w/in 1 week. My friend Marie who's 32 years old, has had eczema since she was 4...in a year of her house using only natural Melaleuca products....she herself, for the first time in her life, has never had an eczema breakout. My son's cradle cap went away within 3 days. If you are using J&J Babywash I would stop that one immediately. Let me know if you have any more questions. It's tough w/ creams aggravating it and I wish you best of luck!

I agree with others, it may be ringworm. It also may be an oral yeast infection. I had one for about a year and had a rash by the corner of my mouth -not always touching it. If nothing else, some good acidopholous culture will be good for her and help if it's yeast related.

My daughter also has eczema, and from what I know is not contagious. I am not sure I can be of much help because my daughter is 5 already and she started since she was 2 and your baby is only 20 mos. But I use oatmeal body wash or some kind of baby body wash with no perfume; I also use ucerin lotion that you can practically get at any drug store like rite aid or walgreens, it is a little spendy though, I just bought a family size bottle for more than $12.00. Hope that helps. I am also from Southern California, I've been living in Oregon for 11 years.

The way you describe it, it sounds like psoriasis. My husband has it (all over). Something that really works well with his skin is taking a bath with a tall glass of milk and 2 teaspoons of olive oil. I would try this on a wash cloth for your daughter. First, wet the wash cloth in warm water (remember the warmer the water the better). Hold it on her face. You are trying to open the pores. Then put the wash cloth in the solution of warm water, milk, and olive oil. With a much smaller amount since it is only for her face. She wouldn't be soaking her whole body. Just pat it dry. DO NOT RUB IT! Keep all soaps off her face.

I hope this helps,
Lauri
