Extra Deep Crib? Does It Exist?

Is there a crib that is "extra deep" so toddlers can't climb out? I tried the "Crib Tent II" but it wouldn't fit our crib (argh!!). My 18 month old dd is almost able to get over the side and I am terrified of a broken neck. Please help!
p.s The crib mattress is set at the absolutely lowest level

What can I do next?

I skipped the toddler bed altogether and put a twin mattress on the floor at this age because I was afraid my daughter would roll out, but she actually never did-I was amazed! Put lots of pillows around and groovy new sheets and make it a fun time! Or get hubby to build a second story on the crib slats. :)

maybe it is just time to move to a toddler bed? My kids were all out of their cribs by 13 months old. Just an idea if you can't find a crib to fix your problem. Good luck! And hopefully no broken bones in your near future!

Out of my four kids, only one was still in a crib at age two. The others were able to climb out at a much earlier age, and as you stated, I was afraid they would get hurt climbing out. So into a toddler bed they went. You can use the crib mattress in a toddler bed. They have built in safety rails so it's harder to fall out in their sleep. You could also go with a twin bed, if you have one on hand and don't want to buy the toddler bed.

It's not ideal, because they can get out when they want to, and not have to wait for you to come and take them out. So be sure the room is completely childproofed and if you have stairs they can access, that you put baby gates up so they won't fall down.

Then you will have to teach them to stay in the bed until morning.

Personally it sounds like she's ready for a regular bed whether it's a toddler or a twin. She should be just fine. The hard part for you as the parent is not being able to leave her in the crib anymore with out her getting out. It may take a couple of weeks to get her used to sleeping in a big bed and staying in it but once she get's used to it. It will be safer than climbing out of a crib

I don't know of any really deep cribs exist. Sounds like your child is ready to move out of the crib to a regular bed. All three of my kids moved to a bed at around this age. I bought a regular twin sized bed and bed rails.

Is your crib the kind you can take the drop side off and turn it into a 'daybed'? At this point does she really need to be 'confined'? I know some parents put gates on the child's bedroom door. I have never done this but at least she'd be confined in her room.

S.,

Sounds like your daughter is ready for a bed. Since my 3 are close in age, the older 2 were both out of the crib around 18 months. We didn't do toddler beds, just went to a twin mattress on the floor. Later, we added a box spring and eventually up to a regular twin bed. At first, we put one side against the wall and used a soft bed rail on the other side so they didn't roll off. Worked for us! Best of luck!

I also recommend going to a bed. My daughter did the same thing at 18 months. we went to a toddler bed because we could use the crib mattress and bedding and it seemed smaller and more "cozy". An easier transition. You can also just put the crib mattress directly on the floor until you get it settled. At least you'll know she's safe. I feel your pain, though.

Hi S., I'm sure you have heard it a bunch of times already, but the rule of thumb that I always used is that once they start to try to climb out it's time to move to a toddler bed. We put a babygate in the doorway of the room to keep our girls in the bedroom at night and the door open. Good luck.

Hey S.,
If that little stink pot, gymnast is climbing out--it's time to get her in a big bed. That way when the new little O. arrives, the crib will be available! :-)

no they don't i went from a crib to a toddler bed because it fits the mattress but to save you money i recomend a twin bed becasue they aren't in a toddler bed too long and it gets to be too small.
good luck

Sorry, S., I've never heard of one. But I've heard of lots of kids who learn to climb out. So, other options ?

One would be to put some padding on the floor, so she won't get hurt if she tumbles down. Another might be to put something she can climb 'onto' next to the crib, so it's easier to climb down (I don't have a clue how these little ones do that part of the trick) onto the floor.

And then . . . .my favorite: accept the inevitable and put her in a twin bed. I know I don't have to caution you abut falling out -- We moved our (now 15 yr old) daughter into a twin bed, which was actually the top bunk of "crate furniture". We thought this was great, because both sides had 2x4's for rails that were screwed right into the frame. She would certainly NOT fall out. And she never did -- but one time when we went to bed, she was crying. I went in and immediately called my husband. She'd fallen through the space between the rail and the mattress, and was stuck by her chin. I couldn't pull her out. So I held her and he pushed down on the mattress so we could pull/push her back to safety. We then put pillows against the rail.

In retrospect, I would put a twin bed against the wall on one side, and perhaps push a dresser or something against it on the other -- Then stuff pillows or something between the two so it would be REALLY HARD to fall between.

We have another twin bed in our house that has a "trundle bed" under it. The trundle is a mattress on a metal frame that rolls out from under, than raises up and locks into place at bed height. If you had a trundle bed, she could either sleep in that, near the floor so she wouldn't fall more than 6 inches when she rolled out, or you could put her to bed and pull out the trundle so she'd roll onto a mattress when falling out of bed. Or, you can do the same thing by putting the crib mattress on the floor by her bed.

Your daughter is ready, able and willing to get out of bed whenever she wants to, anyway, so I suspect the crib is on it's way out. (I think Becca moved to the twin bed at about 18 months, cuz we were preparing to use the crib for her younger sister who was born when she was 20 mos old.)

Good luck ! You have a mountain climber, a tall ship sailor, or a gymnast on your hands !! :-)

I agree with the others who say it's time for a toddler bed. I never had an issue with my kids climbing out of their crib. My oldest was almost 2 when we put her in a toddler bed because we needed the crib for the new baby. My second was about 18 months because we got bunk beds and thought she'd do well with the transition and we were right. I'd really try to move your daughter out of the crib.

I have a 17 month old at home and we have the Wendy Bellisimo crib from Babies r Us. he has been trying to climb out but can't because of the height of the sides. the crib was a little expensive...we bought the set and he was our first.

Sounds like he is ready for a toddler bed. Cribs are for babies, and your son is growing up. Don't be afraid to take this step, you will be happy when you do. Best wishes.
