Hi everyone. My 3 year old came down with pink eye for the first time on Thursday. At least I think it is. The advice nurse diagnosed him over the phone and called in medicine. He has been on the eye drops for a day. Tonight he went down to bed, nothig abnormal, and then wakes up at 1:30am because he threw up in his bed. No other symptoms.....any ideas? He didn't eat anyhthing out of the ordinary. Could the infection be upsetting his stomach some how? He has only thown up twice before...once when he was a baby and he had the stomach flu for a week and then just a month ago when we were having the 100 degree weather (I think he got overheated). Any ideas on what could be wrong? I checked on-line, but do you think he had a reaction to the drops?

Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your advice. It looks like he got the stomach bug. Both of my sons ended up getting it.

I know when my mother caught pink eye from my nephew it came along with symptoms of a major head cold. My sister never knew her son had pink eye until my mom got diagnosed. she always thought it was a cold. If he has a stuffy/ runny nose with this he may have thrown up because of phlem getting caught in his throught. My son does that on occation and it usually happens while he is sleeping.

We've dealt with both the stomach bug and pink eye in our home in the last couple weeks. My toddler first appeared sick with a very high fever and loose stools. He also had minor eye crusties. As soon as he recovered, I came down with a very nasty eye infection in both eyes. Then my husband got it, along with having cold-like symptoms. Then I got it again. :-(

I've been wondering if the two infections are connected but maybe affect different people in different ways?

Hi,
I agree with Kirstin, probably just a coincidence. It would be unlikely to be a reaction to the eye drops (I am a pharmacist). There IS a stomach flu going around this area. I hope he gets better soon!

You absolutely need to insist to take him in and get him checked out. The 2 things could be completely unrelated. I have a doctor that would have just said to bring him in. If he isn't taking liquids, he could become dyhydrated in a day or two. especially with the hot weather. If he is already dehydrated, then he will throw up and not tak liquids becuase of being dyhydrated and need a hydration pack--solves the problem in a matter of hours.

BTW--I just had this situation with my 21 year old daughter, SHe had the flu for weeks and Kaiser Medical just kept telling her that she would be o.k. They were condesending even though she is a pre-nursing student and works at a hospital. She could not take liquids. They told her to go home and sip liquids even though she was throwing everything up and was dyhydrated. I insisted on a hydration pack for her and it relieved the dehydration and allowed her to drink in a matter of 1 hour. She turned the corner immediately after.

hope your son is better--any doubts, take him in.

A little about me. I have 4 kids ages 20 years to 2 years. I am a training officer with State of CA and a former high school teacher and per-nursing. I work FT and building Monavie business.--J. O

Hello,

Interestingly enough, my youngest, he is 5, is just starting to recover from pink eye. I have two boys, one that is 9 and then the five year old. We made it this far without pink eye, believe or not! Anyway, aside from the pink eye Jackson had not had any other symptoms. I would not worry about the throw up because it sounds like he may have a little flu. I am sure it is not related to the drops. I know it is disheartening when they throw up. I usually call my husband in for those situations (hehehe). Hope he is doing better today.

Our pink eye this year came with other cold symptoms, but not throwing up.
One bacterial infection that can cause throwing up in children is strep throat.

Hi R.,
My son recently had an eye infection too. I took him to our pediatrician and he prescribed antibiotics (eye drops). One of our really good friends is an eye doctor and I called her to get her opinion. She said do not give him the antibiotics yet. They are too little for such strong antibiotics. She told me to go buy Refresh Tears (you can find it at longs or walgreens). It's in a green bottle. Give that to your son for 24 hours. Try and give him a drop once an hour. You should see a change within the 24 hours. I did this and the next day his goopy red eye was gone! I never had to give him the antibiotics (7 days worth, ugh). I continued with a little more of the refresh tears for another day just to be sure. You might want to try that and see how it works. My friend (the eye doc) said she tells all her patients to try the refresh tears before going to antibiotics. Good luck!

My son got an eye infection when he was 15mos. We were given the eye ointment Rx and within the first day of treatment he was covered in hives. The eyes are a mucous membrane so a systemic reaction IS possible from something entering the eye. We went back to the MD the next day armed with a DigiCam photo of what his rash looked like. We did continue with the eye ointment and then he had huge liquid blowout poop in every diaper and his poor bottom was covered in a terrible rash as a result. One day I forgot to administer one dose of the ointment and he had a REGULAR POOP. After the next dose was administered we were back to the terrible liquid blowout diapers again. We will NEVER use Bacitracin on him in any form... not Neosporin, not eye ointment, and Certainly Not Orally. Thank God we figured out this allergy with just eye drops... imagine if we had sent them through his digestive system :<

You could call and just see if the doc can see him, it can't hurt and the worse that can happen is he can say there is nothing wrong. Does it look like pink eye to you? Or do you think there is something else going on? Listen to your instincts!

Some people/kids get upset stomachs when they don't feel good, my brother was this way. Anytime he got sick he tended to get sick to his stomach and he threw up more than when he just got the flu.

I suppose he could be allergic to the drops...call the doc and maybe see if there is another one he can have. But unless he ingested the drops...I don't know that it could make him throw up because it is going in his eyes and not through his stomach.

Hmm. We've been through several bouts with pinkeye in our house, and I've never seen a reaction to the eye drops. However - they are an antibiotic, and it's possible he's having a reaction to them.

Or... it could have been food poisoning, or even a touch of that stomach flu that has been going around. With little kids you just never know!

I'd call the pediatrician's office if he throws up again or if you notice any other symptoms that worry you.

Omg! This is exactly what is happening to my 2 year old. He's never thrown up before. Basically we went to his sisters field day and by the evening I saw some whitish discharge in his eyes. I cleaned it up but in the morning he could hardly open his eyes. So I call ed his pediatrician and a prescription for polymyxin was called in. The next day as I was driving, he started crying and all of a sudden, threw up in my entire car. He has done that 4 times so far. I was wondering if it was the pink eye causing it or the medicine. I read the list of side effects for the eye drops but vomiting was not one of them. And then I read your post. No fever, just vomiting
