Eye Muscle Surgery

4 weeks ago my DH had eye muscle surgery to fix the alignment in his left eye...he's completely blind in that eye from an accident many years ago. I can tell the surgery worked as his eye is more aligned with his right eye; however, his eye is still bloody, a bit swollen and he's complaining more about pain and pressure now than he did right after the surgery. It was bad enough that he called the surgeon today to get it looked at and even though the eye should be cleared up by now, the doctor was not overly concerned. It can take some a bit longer to completely heal and he happens to be one of those. The problem? Like an idiot I've been doing research on the internet so now am a bit concerned that there could be something else going on. Do you have any experience with this type of surgery? Did it take a while for it to heal? I'm a worrier...trying to get over it and certainly don't want to worry him if not necessary. Ugh.

What can I do next?

If you are concerned, be a squeaky wheel. It's his EYE! Yeah, maybe some people take longer to heal, but if your DH is having more pain, call and ask to speak to a nurse or be seen again. Better to be a bother than to be stoic and have the Dr. tell you he should have spoken up or come in sooner.

Both of my older girls had eye muscle surgery (my oldest had it done twice). It NEVER took that long to heal. Call again and insist on being seen, go for a 2nd opinion if necessary. Better safe than sorry.

My daughter has had two eye surgeries in the past year and a half. Once to dettach a muscle from each eye, the other to detach and reattach a muscle (both surgeries for allignment due to strabismus) Both times her eyes looked really good after surgery. There was blood of course, but even with the second, more involved surgery, it was less than a week before we saw obvious improvement/less blood. Even the slight under eye bruising was gone in less than a week. The only time she complained after the day of surgery was the next couple of days when she felt like there was something in her eye. (there was. it was stitches)
Definatly see a doc. Maybe a different one. My daughters surgeon is also her pediatric opthamologist and a great guy, but I know lots of surgeons who don't want to be bothered after they do 'their part'.

My son has had it done twice. Both times, his eye was completely healed in less than 3 or 4 days. If you have already been back to the dr. and he is blowing you off, I would go see someone else. Better safe than sorry!

I had three surgeries like this before I was 6 years old. I don't remember the details but after a month he should be getting better, not worse. Surgeons often don't have good bedside manners. I'd just call and schedule an appt with his obstetrician. They're more apt to have time for you than a busy surgeon. Good luck!
