K.K. asks from Erie, PA

I'm embarrassed to ask this, because it seems like it should have an obvious answer, BUT it's stressing me out. I made an appointment for my son and daughter to have their portraits taken this weekend, at Picture People. I thought i had outfits for them but when i put them next to each other i don't like them. I'd still like my daughter to wear her demin dress but I don't even know what to go out and buy for my son that would coordinate. White would wash him out and i doubt i could find the same weight of demin. Any suggestions on that???
Are there any stores that sell clothes for boys and girls that coordinate so i can just buy them both totally new outfits??? I'm going to try Children's Place. But i'd love other options where it was totally obvious that the clothes were meant to go together.
Even if i could find them both polos in complimentary colors, that might work. I just always buy primary colors for my son and pastels for my daughter because their coloring is enough different that i think those are what suits them. Would Navy and baby blue work?
Uggg, maybe i'm making too big a deal out of this, but it happens everytime i try to have their pictures taken. I guess i'm just looking for any tips you can give me on this.

What can I do next?

I'm fashion immpaired too but I always just did blue jeans or khackis (sp?) and white shirts. Sometimes just a very plain print but then the other one would wear white. You definitely don't want a lot of colors and prints. Nothing fancy but being dressed up was not their thing.....or maybe it wasn't mine!!

I guess i dont really understand what you are asking?!
What kind of outfits to put on them?

Girl- put anything on them! Doesnt have to be matchy matchy- why do you want that?
Jeans, solid shirts, or prints that coordinate- or something totally different ... Its not that deep

My children's complexion sounds exactly like your children - very opposite of one another. It is hard knowing how these pictures will be a permanent memory you share with your children and family, and you want it to be just the right way the FIRST time. I am a designer and color is always first on my mind in pictures.
I recently had my children's pictures taken by a wonderful photographer who is also a mom and she gave me some great advice. She said when the children are young and especially when you pose them together, the more simple the clothing the better. This allows the focus to be on their face and not distracted by colors or patterns. She loves to put groups in white shirts & jeans with a white background. We did this and our pictures turned out so great, and I was skeptical from the get-go. She also took portraits of my nephews who really favor each other, even at 3 years apart. They wore black shirts (& khakis, I think?) with a black background and the pictures are awesome. They are 6 & 9 years old so this works better than for my little ones.
If you keep your daughter in the denim dress, try a white shirt and jeans for your son (I though the white shirt and background would wash out my creamy skinned, blue eyed boy, but his face was radiant and looked so precious!). If you want more color on him in the pic but don't want to take away from their precious faces, try khakis and a light blue shirt (Baby Gap or Children's Place should have this - you could also try TJ Maxx. They always have Polos for boys and sometimes polo dresses for girls that match). Dn't worry about the denims being exact matches, just get something similar and the feeling carries throughout the picture. A white, gauzy summer dress would also look cute on a darker complexion. You could go out and buy new outfits, but if you like what you have already you can definitely make it look great.
Good luck and don't forget that they will always be the most beautiful kids in the world to you!

Hey Kristi,
No need to feel embarrased about this one! I have been there in your shoes as well. Let me say that you can never go wrong with denim. With the white background it looks great! If you are going to the Picture People @ Ross Park the Children's Place is right across from it and that is what I did to find something for all 4 of mine for a photo at the Picture People. It was actually quite fun finding something beforehand and then going to do the pictures. Make sure to have a second outfit for each one as it is nice to have a different look for individuality on single shoots. Good luck deciding on your pictures! I had my girlfriend go with me the first time I did pictures and it was so helpful especially with the changing of clothes to have the help with that. The second time I took my husband and that was great since he had a hard time justifying the cost of pictures when all he saw was the bill. When he came along, he helped pick out which pictures he liked and had no problem with the price since he was doing the selection. I hope all goes well for you and your two.

I completely understand I too like my son and daughter to somehow match and it isn't the easiest thing. If you want to use the jean dress than the matching polo's would work and maybe put him in a navy pant or short or anothe color short and see if you can get the same color shirt. I know that Boscov's and kohls both sell Polo and sometimes they have outfits that kinda go. I do the childrens place alot for easter outfits maybe even the gap would have something. Good luck R. C

If you want to stick with the denim dress for your daughter, maybe try jeans and a white t-shirt for your son?

You're on the right track by doing solids. Patterns tend to be too much when there's more than 1 person in the photo. Shades of the same color will work well, as will polo shirts (something timeless).

Kristi,

How about black or red shirts with the denim. I don't think the denim needs to be the same weight or the exact color...just both in light denim or both in dark denim.

CWD Kids has great brother/sister clothing. It can be pricey. It's an Internet store. Get on the mailing list and you'll get notices of sales. www.cwdkids.com

I found it frustrating when my kids were younger and I wanted matching / coordinated outfits. The Children's Place has coordinating clothes for same gender, as in 3 girls of different age groups, but not for brother/sister.

Good luck and have fun with it. I've taken the kids for plenty of photos where they were both in their favorite outfits, and as long as they didn't clash, they still looked great!

I always found solid bright colors work best at picture people. Patterns never look right...too busy. How about solid red polos and put your son in denim shorts and your daughter in denim skirt...or khaki shorts and khaki skirt?

Think simple works better at picture people....

Yes, you are being a perfectionist, but when it comes to making memories, we all want them to be perfect in some way. The Children's Place is a good idea, I like most of their clothes for both boys and girls. I've never been a personal fan of this idea, but for the holidays lots of people dress almost totally alike. For example, white shirts with blue jeans, or all wearing a red shirt or dress. My main suggestion is dress them as their personality suits. My toddler is rough and tumble, so I don't like some of the frou-frou outfits more expensive children's clothing stores carry. Good luck with the pic!

I have 3 boys so it is a bit easier, but I love Heartstrings. There is one in Lancaster. They have complimentary outfits for the girls and the boys, as well as for all one sex. There is usually a coupon in the magazine you can pick up at the outlets. With the jean dress, have your son where any color blue polo with jeans or tan shorts. I did my kids with jeans and white shirts and it came out beautiful. You can always use a blue background so it doesn't wash them out. I feel your pain. I was the same way, always had to be perfect for the pictures and I always stressed myself out. I look back and sometimes the pictures that aren't perfect really are. Good luck.

I agree with the khaki and navy going great with denim.

Hartstrings is our favorite too, and coordinating outfits are huge there... there is also one in the Grove City Outlet mall, not sure which end of the state you are on. Good luck!

I get a Hanna Anderson catalog and they always have coordinated outfits for boys and girls, even adult clothes. They are a bit more expensive than Children's Place, but really adorable stuff. Also, I love the store Janie and Jack. Not sure if all their stuff is coordinated between boys and girls, I only have a boy. But they have cute clothes and maybe you could color coordinate the outfits.

Gap has a lot of coordinating clothes. You can also put your son in kaki pants and a colored polo shirt. It would go with her jean dress just fine. Good luck.

Kristi,
I love Childrens Place and always find cute stuff there. I think the simpler you keep it the better--How about jeans and a white shirt/tee for each? You can always fancy-up your daughter a bit with a hair accessory--in any color. And don't forget the shoe issue! Bare feet are adorable in pictures!

if she's wearing all denim, put your son in khakis and whatever shirt you want. I button-down, polo or t-shirt... any color. Denim is such a blank slate that ANYTHING will go. Put him in khakis and you've got the same thing... ANYTHING will go! :-)
Enjoy the pictures, stop stressing. What shirt do you put your son in that you just love the most? That's the one I would pick to put him in for pictures. Don't buy something new. My bet is he's got plenty of clothes to choose from and what fun to look back at that shirt and think- I remember you wearing that shirt and I just loved you in it (well... of course you loved him all the time, right?!)

Enjoy the moment,
R.

Different shades of blue or green always work together, especially with denim in my opinion.

OK, Mama! Relax! These are fun memories in the making. Yes, Baby blue and navy totally work, as do most childrens clothes even if they don't literally match. Dark and light versions of the same colors-red and pink etc always work. Do NOT worry about fabric weights of denim etc-it's a two dimensional image!!!! Also, you've got an angel and devil you say, girl and boy, two different colorings. ADORABLE!!! Nobody would ever look at their bright shining faces in the photo and wish their clothes matched better or that they looked more similar to each other. Just pick outfits that look good on each of them. They will look great.

I've found that JC Penney has a great selection of kids clothes. If your daughter is wearing a denim dress, maybe a pair of khaki pants and a light blue button-down oxford style shirt for him?

My brother and I have been getting our childrens' pictures taken annually for my parents - there are 5 boys, and we try to coordinate their outfits each year. We've done primary colors, we've done earth-tones, we've done white button-downs on a darker background, and we've done Christmas photos with red or green sweaters. They've always turned out nice, and we don't shop together for the outfits! Don't try too hard, I'm sure they'll turn out beautifully!
