Feedback on Daycares and Sickness

Mama's you rock and I am back again with another kind of survey question. I have an 18 month old daughter who was born a couple months early. Because of that, we had her in a private home care situation up until May when our sitter had to return to work because her husband lost his job. The work I do requires travel (and we NEED my income) and my husband is a maintenance tech with the city. Because of this, we have made the move to regular daycare because we needed the extensive hours and reliability.

So since we have been at daycare, my daughter has been almost constantly sick, mostly with respiratory viruses although we have had two rounds of strep throat and conjunctivitis as well. I expect her to go through this as her immune system has not been exposed to this type of environment and I am somewhat OCD with the cleaning thanks to her being a preemie. We have started her on multivitamins to support the immune system as well as vitamin C.

I am changing schools because I am not convinced that current school's hygiene/sick policies are up to par and I keep having to take off work to address illnesses. Teachers there are wonderful, but my mom radar is screeching about the illness situation. I am very impressed by the new school's hygiene and cleaning policies and the kids there all looked very healthy, unlike current school's kids.

Which brings me to my question(s): For those of you who have had to switch from private care to day care, what's normal in terms of being sick? How long before your kiddo built up a resistance to the cruddies? Any schools in the Plano, Murphy, Wylie, or far North Garland where you didn't have a problem? Any special things you do with/for your kids in terms of diet or supplements that help with this sort of thing?

I know that's a lot of questions, but if you stuck around for this much of my post and have ideas I would LOVE to hear them! Thank you!!!

So What Happened?

We switched to a new daycare and my daughter has been healthy and doing wonderfully at the new school. She's crazy about the place and my husband and I are pretty happy with it too. Thanks for your advice, and I will be more trusting of my mom radar going forward.

IF she continues to be ill, you may want to have her tested through Immuno Laboratories. My girls did the same thing with ear infections as soon as I put them into a public MDO. Since they never had had an ear infection, I felt it was immune related and not ear tube issues. I switched pedi's and found out that their immune systems were suppressed due to the foods I was feeding them that was challenging their systems. It is not necessarily an "allergy" but an "intolerance". We removed the foods and ta--da---not one ear infection afterwards or illness even during the flu season (and we do not get the flu shot). I know people say the child has to 'build' his/her immune system, but I don't think that is all true. I think sometimes there are core issues that are overlooked, such as these intolerances, especially if she has been on any antibiotics, which will only increase the likelihood of future illnesses/intolerances. Until you eliminate the 'intolerable' foods for 3-4 months, it will not get better. I have NO regrets on doing what we did. I feel like the girls are the healthiest they have ever been, and I am not afraid to take them to any public place in fear of them getting ill. If you have questions, feel free to email me or feel free to contact Dr. Bain, who actually ordered the screening and has helped us all the way.

We started my son at a daycare when he was 5 months old. He was also a preemie so my inlaws took care of him for the first 3 months when I had to go back to work. He was constantly sick for about the first year. I think it is completely normal. There are a lot of kids around and no matter how well you clean little kids are constantly putting things into their mouths and taking each other's food/drinks. I felt like I was taking time off every week because he was always so sick. Around 18 months old he finally started getting better. His immune system was finally building up and hardly ever got sick. It is a tough period to go through but this too shall pass.

When he turned 10 months old we did switch daycares and had him enrolled in Bearfoot Lodge in Sachse. I believe there is also a Wylie location. I loved them and the director is wonderful.

Good luck and hope your little one gets through this time without too much sickness!!

My son went from in home day care to a preschool when he was 2.5 years old and the only thing I saw an increase in was the seasonal cold. He came home with pink eye on Friday, but it's only the 2nd time he's ever had it in his life (the first time was at the in home day care). Since he's 3.5 years old, I think that's pretty good.

There's not much I feel we can do about the seasonal cold except continue to encourage good hygiene and I know his school does the same thing, so the rest I don't worry about.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction with changing schools.

Good luck!!!

When my eldest daughter started public school after never have been in a daycare or MDO setting she was sick A LOT. It seemed every two to three weeks she was ill with tummy troubles, ear infections, snuffles & coughing. She was out so much from illness that we missed more than the allowed days & had to fill out special paperwork for her to be promoted.

From August through probably March we dealt with seemingly endless illness. Finally things turned around & she stopped getting sick so often.
