D..
When this happened to my child, it was because he had pnemonia. I think that if I were you, I'd be taking her back to the doctor...
My 6 yro daughter has had a fever for six days now. I took her to the doctor on day 3 and was told its a virus, nothing to do but give Tylenol for fever. Question is, it is normal to run a fever for so many days for a virus? Her only other symptom is a stomach ache. Her fever w/o Tylenol stays between 102-103 and with Tylenol goes down to about 100. She's not eating but drinking well. Thanks for your input.
I ended up taking her to the ER. After test, the ER doctor said it was just a virus. She ended up having the fever for another 7 days before she was back to normal. Thankful no one else in house caught whatever she had.

I'd take her in tomorrow thats a long time for that high of a fever imo.
I think it's too long because she's also not herself and she's not eating much if anything. Six days is too long to go without nourishment, liquids or no liquids. I'd call the doctor in the morning and report in. Even if it is a virus, she needs something in the way of nutrition and maybe another look-see at the stomach. Did they palpate her abdomen thoroughly? Check for UTI? Did they ask about bowel movements and so on? Sometimes a kid says "stomach ache" for a whole variety of abdominal issues.
This happened to my son once..we went thru like three bottles of Tylenol and motrin..was very scary..he also had nausea. They ended up giving him antibiotic amoxicillan that pink liquid and cleared up after that.
Oh my, we just went through this with our 3 year old son just last month. He too had a low grade fever for 2 days, no appetite but in high spirits and drinking well. Took him in to see the pediatrician and they said it was a virus, and as long as he was drinking fluids the virus had to "run its course. To make a long story short, we ended up in the Er two days later after I had had enough of the pediatrician laid back attitude. He hadn't eaten in 5 days and was no longer drinking fluids. A lung X-ray determined pneumonia, tested positive with RSV and we were admitted for 2 days to stabilize him and monitoring. Finally we were sent home with prescriptions for steroids, antibiotics, and heavy duty anti-inflammatory meds.. I was a wreck, and so upset that I hadn't pushed for more testing right from the get go. Take her in to the ER- it's better to have the tests run and be wrong, rather than play the waiting game and get sicker.. Something's going on here.....
I would call and talk to the nurse at your pedi's office. Six days of fever over 102 does seem like it is going on for a while...and she probably needs t be seen again.
I wouldn't rush to the ER...see if you can get her back in today for a follow up...let them give her another look.
Sometimes we take them in so close to the symptoms starting that all they can say is virus...but whatever this is has been going on for six days and they should be able to diagnose it now.
Hugs!!
Whatever you do -- don't take an antiobiotic unless you are sure its bacterial -- docs perscribe antiobiotics too quickly -- when its viral - it has to run its course
This summer my 4 year old -- (5 tomorrow) had a fever for 5 days - I took her to pedi twice -- uti and strep tested her and came back negative -- then a full body rash - I was freaking out. You would think we were in a third world country or something. I even took her back when the rash appeared bc I did not know if it was menigitis, measles, scarlet fever or something worse. Again, was told its viral
Then I got it -- five days of fever and migraine that would not let go -- I was crying by day six just asking someone to put me out -- I got the rash but only on my back. I went to doc and had blood drawn -- if white blood cell count is high you have bacterial infection -- if low, you have a virus - Mine was in normal range so doc could not perscribe me anything. All I could do was go home and wait it out.
Then son - age 8 -- got it fever, and full body rash. Better in 3-4 days.
So, if its viral don't worry - viral things have to run there course - if you are concerned have the tests run but don't assume antiobiotics are the like are the answer. I see a very homeopathic doc who only administers such when necessary -- I thought for sure I would need it or my kids would need it and it is not the case. Best of luck -- I hope it passes soon.
I am single mom -- no DAD to help in this case...
Hope you have family and a hubby to help!
my daughter had a fever for 5 days once. We had also gone to the dr. on day 3. Her dr. on the 5th day told us to go the ER (it was a weekend). She ended up with pneumonia. No one could hear it while listening to her lungs, but it did show up on the x ray. I would take her in.
M.,
I just went through the same thing last week with my 8 yo son. He had the fever for 7 days. Doctor told me the same thing. He also told me that it could last up to two weeks. Hang in there and good luck!

My daughter had something like this, but with a much higher fever - 106, controlled with ibuprofen and tylenol. We did every test imaginable and after 7 or 8 days, it finally broke. I have never been so scared in my life. It was a virus thought and she was fine after. I know this is scary, but make sure she gets plenty of fluids and it will be better.

Just to be sure...I would take her to the ER and not wait to take her to the doctor.
Take her back to the doc. It still could be a simple virus, but this warrants a thorough workup.
my dr would say to come back if the child doesn't get better.
once we went back 3 times.. and finally she needed an antibiotic.
This happened to my daughter and she really was not all that sick. She would be fine, playing all day then night would come and her temperature would spike to 102-103. Finally on the 5th day of this, I happen to hear her cough...just for a a few seconds and she only coughed once but I knew she had something. Took her to the docs and they diagnosed her with walking pneumonia.
I would say something could possibly be brewing and your daughter very well could have an infection of some sort. I would call her pediatrician and discuss with the nurse.
Almost the same thing happened to my 4 year old over Easter. Day three of that fever I took her in and it was just a virus. Day 6 and I know she was a bit dehydrated by then and lethargic, went to ER and it was a UTI....with absolutely NO other symptoms. You need to get her checked out again, six days is too long. Especially if your mommy radar is saying something else is up. Also, my daughter got IV fluids (I never thought she was that dehydrated since she was still peeing) and she took a LOT of fluids. Just from that she was feeling so much better. And after the antibiotics through the IV the next day she was almost her old self.
Don't back down....tell them you want some testing.
