I was exposed to fifth's disease when I was pregnant. I got tested and I have had it before,so I was in the clear. My doctor told me if you live in the USA there is a good chance you have had it! I would not worry.
Blood tests confirmed today that my 20 mo daughter has a bad case of Fifth's Disease. I'm not concerned about her but I am concerned about myself. I just turned 12 weeks pregnant. I spoke with my OB and had labs drawn on myself. My results should come back on Monday. In the mean time, I sit and wait....I'm not extremely concerned as I'm sure I've been exposed before, but you never know...I'm wondering how many others have been exposed during pregnancy, if they tested positive, and how the baby did with it? Thanks! It's gonna be a long weekend!
Good news!! My lab results came back today and they showed past exposure and no active exposure! I shouldn't have to worry about anything!

HI J.:
I know exactly what you are going through. I was exposed to 2 children with fifths when I was 16 weeks pregnant. The mother notified me as soon as she found out and I went and got the blood test.
I don't know how I missed having this disease, but I never had the disease so my OB was a little worried. She kept a careful watch on me and I had an extra ultrasound to make sure that my son was developing fine. Everything turned out great. It can be stressful, but my OB told me not to worry. She told me to stay positive and to not worry or stress because that isn't good for the baby either. She was very nuturing and kept telling me that everything was right on schedule. In the end it all turned out fine.
I was exposed during my first pregnancy, and had the blood test done that confirmed I did in fact have the antibioties from childhood, presumably. The doc said it's pretty common to have antibioties without realizing you ever had the disease in the first place...many times it runs it's course with no symptoms.
Another mom I knew was exposed and did not have the antibioties. They did regular ultrasounds to watch the baby, and all turned out fine.
Good Luck!
my mom literally remembers everything i ever had growing up, disease-wise, and could NOT remember me ever having anything resembling fifth's.
i was exposed at about 30 weeks or so, but labs came back that i had the antibodies so had been previously exposed.
when i called my OB's office, she said that if i hadn't been exposed previously then they would keep an extra eye on me & do additional ultrasounds to make sure all was well with the baby. she never indicated there was anything else that they could/would do for me.
congratulations, and good luck! i hope you get good results on monday - i hear you on it being a long weekend! :)

I was exposed to 5ths disease also when pregnant. I had the blood test and had not had it as a child (which sounded odd, since most people do catch it without knowing it) The dr's did blood tests every few weeks until she was born and all was fine. As far as I know I never did catch it. I know it is easier said than done, but try your best not to worry.
