I had a friend who got 5ths while pregnant and has a beautiful, perfectly healthy little girl. I believe she was also in her first trimester. I hope it all works out okay.
So last week my daughter had 5ths disease and this week I found out i am pregnant. so I have heard that being exposed to 5ths while in your first trimester is bad and can cause complications. So i was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this? My daughters doctor told me to just tell my doc that i need to be tested for 5ths. The thing is that i am leaving for the whole month of june and my insurance doesn't start until june first so do i need to be seen by a doc. while i am away or can it wait until i am back home in july? By then i will only be about 9 or 10 weeks pregnant.

I don't know anything about this disease, but can you call your doctor's office and speak to a nurse or the doctor and find out what your window is?
I think the earlier you see a doctor the better. Better to be safe than sorry. It will put your mind at ease as well. No sense worrying the whole month of June. Tell your doctor about your insurance situation. Maybe they can work out a deal with you.
I would just call the drs and tell them the situation and see what they would say. I would also google the disease maybe look at webmd and see if you can find anything. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter and hope everything goes well.
I was exposed to 5ths Disease in my last trimester and my OB said that the real concern is only during the first trimester. I think the test is just a matter of getting blood drawn so maybe you can find out what labs your insurance and/or OB work with so that you can either find out the price out-of-pocket or pop into a lab if possible while on your trip. I have no medical background so can't advise on whether or not the testing is urgent but I would consider your peace of mind. If you're the type to worry about it until the test is done, it might be worth it to get it taken care of sooner rather than later. A call into your OB would be the best place to start. Stay healthy and rest up while you can.
Hi Andrea,
The same happend to me. When I was pregnant with my first I started to work at a Daycare center and caught 5ths from the children there. My OB immediately sent me to a specialist and all they did was an extensive ultrasound and told me the baby looked fine. So I guess that's about all they'll do for you too but going to the Dr and getting that reassurance was well worth it. Going a entire month worrying about it can cause problems in itself. Call your OB and see what they think, better safe than sorry.

I was in the same boat as you when I was pregnant with my first. I was a preschool teacher and got 5ths right when I got pregnant. I saw a doctor right away, but that was hard to do. Most doctors told me to wait because there was nothing that they could do anyways. If you don't have insurance, I can tell you not to worry about not being seen right away. They didn't do anything for me then either. I would just let your doctor know about it and maybe get the blood test to confirm if you have it. At around 18 weeks I was sent to a special clinic that specializes in those kind of things. We got genetic conciling just in case there was something wrong with the baby. They did a bunch of ultrasounds on me and then saw me again around 26 weeks to re-check the baby. Luckily my daughter was born perfectly normal and full term. It's something to watch, but there is very little if anything they can do to help the baby after you've contracted it. Good luck and take care!

Andrea,
I agree with the doctor. There is a simple blood test to see if you have ever had 5th. disease. It is sort of like the on they do to check for measels titer. I would not wait until later. Look online to see the complications. Not good. If you have had 5th disease you will be fine. Please let your doctor know.
Andrea,
There should be a local maternity clinic that can help you if you don't have insurance coverage. You can check your local phone directory, or call your local hospital and ask if they have a referral. You could also call a doctor's office, let them know the situation and ask if they can refer you to a low cost/no cost clinic.
Best of luck,
S.
I used to work in a daycare, and this same thing happened to one of my co-workers...5th disease was going around the daycare, and she found out she was pregnant a few weeks later. Her doctor told her that she had probably had 5th disease when she was a child (most kids get it at one time or another), and therefore would have antibodies against it. Do you know if you have ever had 5th disease? Anyway, she went on to have a perfectly healthy baby...I know every situation is different, so if you are concerned, call your doctor. Even if you can't go in yet, maybe they can give you info over the phone.
I would reccommend talking to your ob and getting a blood test. I have done a bit of research and it seems though 5th disease is not good to get during pregnancy it does not always cross the placenta and if it does-does not always effect the fetus. For peace of mind I would get the blood test. I took am pregnant and have been exposed to a virus that is not great to get during pregnancy so I understand your concern and worry. Best of luck and peace of mind
