I have an 8 week old daughter that fights sleep really bad. She will fall asleep for 10-30 mins at a time but wake up screaming. When she wakes she doesnt want food and nothing seams to soothe her at all. She does this 4-5 times a night then will fall asleep and stay asleep for 6-8 hours. Why is she doing this and is there a way to help her stay asleep the first time around?

What can I do next?

You're probably missing her sleep cues and putting her down too late. The first time she yawns or her eyes get droopy, put her down. If you wait until she's fussy, it's too late and it will mess with her sleep sequences. Put her down between 6:30 and 8:00 at the first chance you get.

Also, she's is technically sleeping through the night already, so say a big prayer that it keeps up. 5 hours is considered sleeping through the night!

8 weeks is a wonder week --google it. She is also too young to self-sooth, so she needs help. In a few weeks, this will change. Until then, be thankful you are getting so much sleep.

Is she eating when she wakes up? Do you think she might be hungry? Make sure she;s full when she does go to sleep but you can't expect an 8 week old to sleep all night yet. Good luck!

Have you tried putting her to sleep in something other than her bed? Both of my sons had acid reflux. They did the exact same thing as your daughter. They didn't spit up a ton (at that age) but would have enough come up in their throat to hurt and that is why they would wake up screaming. Then after numerous times of waking up and spending sometimes hours getting them back to sleep, they would sleep for a long stretch (probably out of pure exhaustion). They both slept better when they would fall asleep in the car seat or the swing (or when I would hold them up on my shoulder) . If you haven't already tried letting her sleep in a reclined position, them try it out and see if that helps. If it does, then talk to your pediatrician. Good Luck!

Is there a chance she has gas or colic and that's what's waking her up? when my son has had it, he wanted to sleep but kept waking up because of it. In my case, I had to change my diet because my milk was giving him colic.

Good luck!

Young babies usually respond very well to being swaddled, wrapped snugly with arms inside the blanket. This simulates the closeness of the womb and prevents the uncontrolled arm movements that startle them. Reflux may also be a problem. I would swaddle her, and raise one end of the mattress a little or put her in an infant seat in her crib. I'll bet this will help. Good luck.

Sounds like she has colic. Buy some of the over the counter anti-gas medicine for babies doesn't completely solve the problem but will help.
