Hello, my sons big toe and thumb nails seem to break near the cuticles. they are still attached to the skin but I have to wait for the break to grow out grow out to remove it. this causes he big toe nails to be discolored and dry looking. i trim his nails once a week sometimes every other week. and lotion them every night. at first i thought his shoes were too small so i got him a bigger size and nope that didnt help.. i want to call the doctor but not sure if they will see him since he is not sick with fever or in pain... not sure if this is a serious medical condition or what i can do to fix it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys for all your input. i did contact the pediatrician and they had no idea and referred me the a dermatologist. We went yesterday and she knew right away.. Beaus Lines... any kind of dramatic changes to the body (fever) puts growth into shock which causes the nails to grow and break as they do for my son.. sounds pretty wierd to me because i have never heard of it. but no medication just let it takes its course and keep them trimmed and clean.. not sure when it will stop though.. kind of frustrating not knowing how to fix the problem but as long as he is not in pain i guess it is okay.. has anyone else ever heard of this?

They will see him no matter what and the discoloration is what bothers me...I would call your pedi tomorrow.

They should see him even if its something small....
I would call and tell them that you are worried about this and would like it checked out.
There is something causing his nails to do it!

It probably isn't a serious medical condition, but it wouldn't hurt to call your pediatrician and at least talk to his nurse about it. They are usually pretty willing to talk to you on the phone about stuff without coming in to see them. It could be a vitamin deficiency, a fungus, or may just be the way his nails grow!? My son has some serious cuticles that grow just on his small toes. I trim them, but they are kind of weird...I am sure it is nothing serious to worry about! Just like you!

Sounds a little like a nail fungus ... definately have it looked at.

Definitely call the doctor.

My youngest used to have a pinky toe nail that always came off after it came in. Broke right at the cuticle as well. He is 4 now and it grows in just fine.

He didn't have the discoloration and that could be the sign of something else. Don't wait. It's not a sickness but still an issue that he can be seen about.

Don't worry! I'm sure it's minor.
