Yellow Nails on Toes

Have you tried to buff out the nails? Sometimes I get that from leaving polish on too long. Buffing removes the yellow layer right away.

Stop using the polish even the clear until the nail grows out. I had this in my younger days. I bought an over the counter toe nail scrub, it was anti-fungal I think Sally Hansen made it. I used that in the shower until the nails grew out. Now they are healthy and I have stopped using polish altogether. I have a kit that has different buffers to shine the nails. It works great and is cheaper then polishes.
Your nails (finger and toes) need air to stay healthy. I have noticed that my finger nails are so much stronger and grow faster since I stopped using nail polish. It just takes a little time.

You need to rule out a fungal infection by sending off a small clipping of your toenail to a lab. This test takes several weeks. Call your doctor.

Add: As another posted suggested, podiatrists recommend Vicks VapoRub rubbed on the nail bed each night in lieu of costly and lengthy medication treatment.

Sounds like it may be fungus. My hubby had it really bad in his nail and literally had to have the roots of the nail burnt out. If yours isn't too bad I've heard that you can soak your toe in listerine (I know sounds weird). Or maybe find a high concentration tea tree oil (melalueca oil would be the best in this case but you'd have to know somebody in the biz).

I'd do a google search "yellow toe nails" and see if you can figure out if there is a home remedy or whether it is definitely still infected...... or call your podiatrist and see if the nurse will advise of the phone.

I'd make sure it's not infected and just the stain from being colored. If it's the stain, then you need to go without polish for a while til it grows out or wears off. If it's an infection, get it treated.

If it's yellow and brittle, that's fungus.

If you've ruled out fungus and infection, it can be a stain, not only from the color, but from not enough sun or air exposure, too (sort of how cultured marble will yellow if you leave something sitting on the counter too long. Move it, and a short while later, the stain is gone). Keeping them painted will only prolong the yellowing.

You can use whitening toothpaste. Just scrub it on with an old toothbrush. Twice a day, for a week.

Typically, discoloration or tints can easily be buffed off. Get a mildly abrasive buffer, it looks similar to a nail file, but much thicker. Your nail plate has 100+ layers and buy removing the top several layers you can get back the natural color.

Keeping them polished will only make it worse.
The lady that does my pedi's says the worst thing you can do is to keep a dark, heavy polish on your nails all-the-time.
Likely, if it's not staining from polish, it's a fungal infection and you can get a prescription from your doc. I've also heard (not tried, or seen this work) that Vick's Vapo Rub on the nail gets rid of it.
