in my case, i would not have made it through the first year without my family. we did a family party at my mom's with cake, ice cream, and presents. it was tons of fun. personally i feel like giant first birthday bashes are a huge waste of money. not to mention silly - we all know a one year old couldn't care less! love the idea that this is a celebration of making it through the first year, too! whatever you do it's for YOU so just keep that in mind.

The first birthday is for YOU, not for her. You made it through the first year, congrats!

For our girls, we had a cocktail party and invited the friends we'd been too sleep-deprived to socialize with in the previous year. =)

It pretty much depends on you and what you want for her. My step-daughter had alot of people who wanted to be there and they have just a small house, but couldn't afford a party out someplace (they can get pricey), so we had it at our house. It was a little crowded, but it was nice. If you want to have it out someplace, and there's a few other children, try booking it at Funtastic Play Center...Van Horn at Allen in Woodhaven. It's a great place for crawlers & runners, not as crazy as Chuck E Cheese or Caesarland. It does seem that everyone wants to celebrate a baby's 1st birthday, more so than the 2nd or 3rd.
good luck!

Catherine is right! They are not aware of anything really. Just don't make it so big and so long you overload the baby. keep it short for your child's sake.
Going to lunch with freinds, or dinner, is nice.( That way yo don't have people hanging out all day while your daughter is sleep deprived) Bring a camera, birthday hats and order dessert/cake. Put a candle on top. viola.

Hi K., for our son's first birthday I bought Subway platters, made a big salad, bought a cake and had cold champagne for the adults! We had family and close friends (about 12 people) and it was a great afternoon. There were 4 kids whole enjoyed playing together and the adults had time to relax and have a drink. I'm sure it will be a great day no matter what you do!

Hi K., my comment is the complete opposite of all the other posts. I'm really big on birthdays! For my son's first birthday, my husband and I went all out. I'm an event decorator, so I was in my element. We had a big backyard bash with decorations, a huge bounce house, popcorn machine, lunch (chicken nuggets and fries), coloring activites, cupcakes/ice cream, good bags and presents. The both the kids and adults had a blast. No my son won't remember the party, but he will be able to see the pictures. We spent a little more money than we expected, but I have not regrets. The party was fun!

I would definitely keep it low key. It really isn't the time to go all out. Kids never perform and first birthdays are no different. There are still regular nap times, and kids get easily overwhelmed with all of the people and decorations and change of schedule.
I woud keep it at your house where she is comfortable and make it have special meaning, but more tailored for the adults who will be there and remember it. Don't expect much from your little one year old!
