End of 2nd grade- and the Joliet diocese requires two years of religious ed instruction before being allowed to take First Communion, so you'd need to start her in religious ed in 1st grade.
Best of luck!
In what grade do children typically make their First Communion in the Catholic church? I believe it has changed since I was a child.

2nd grade here, which actually, is the same as it was back in the day for me.
It's 2nd grade at our parish.
it is suppose to be 2nd grade - my son did it then... i am having a problem though w/this for my dd now... the church we were at is like the one poster said - has to be 1st and 2nd grade (2 yr program) to do it - so tech we are behind (she is in 2nd grade) i thought of going back to our old church they have a 1 yr program however the classes are on sat. and we go to WI on lots of saturdays so we won't be home all the time.. i should have enrolled her in the summer class (that is in place of the fall class) but my dh broke his arm and we had no $ coming in and couldn't afford it then.. now i don't know what to do ...
my question is does it HAVE to be 2nd? i mean can they do it next yr if they are in 3rd? i remember when i was a kid i prob was in 2nd but my brother had communion at the same time as me and he was in 5th at the time... so to me can't you really do it anytime? it just is "preferred" in 2nd - if that was the case what if you DID miss it - so they are saying you can never then get communion?
