Flu Shot for 1 Year Old?

I just took my son in for his 1 year well check appointment today and the doc recommended me to give him the flu shot ( a serie of two shots) in the middle of October. My husband and I were discussing the necessity of it. My MIL told me that the three times that she took the flu shot she got really sick and do not seem to think that my son needs the shot.

Just want to know if any mamas out there have kids with the flu shot and how they reacted to it after and if it is really necessary?

Thanks.

My husband gets sick when he has had them, I don't get it ever and won't give it to my kids. Dr.Tenpenny and www.thedoctorwithin.com have some more information on why not to get it.

I am a registered nurse and have NEVER had a flu shot and neither has anyone in my family. My kids are 20 years old and 16 years old. IF we have ever had the flu it has been very mild.

Our nurse told me that only her and one other nurse did NOT get the shot. They were the ONLY TWO TO NOT GET SICK! She never gets the flu shot.

We do NOT get the flu shot and neither do our kids! They don't know WHAT kind of flu will be here. They GUESS. So you may be injecting those ingredients into your child for NO reason. And I've heard of lots of people who get sick soon after being vaccinated. That is NOT a coincidence!

My 16 & 13 yr olds have never had a flu shot - and it hasn't even been mentioned by my ped until relatively recently.

They are not in any high risk group and they currently homeschool (used to be in traditional school).

First of all, the flu shot does not and can not make you sick. People who say that are buying into myth. If she got sick, it wasn't from the shot. The flu shot does not deliver active virus, and therefore can not make you sick.

Should you give it to your son? Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes. The flu can be fatal to a 1-year-old.

Ok to Nikki G. . .Each year the scientist make a new vaccine for what they think will be the strand of the flu. They can't predict which strand of the flu will be the most spread, so they kind of just guess. The shot that you get will protect against A strand, but not against B. But if you've had C, D, E, F and so on in the past and E strikes, then you wont get sick. So yes you still can get sick when you have had the shot. Soooo. . . it's really up to you and not what others say.
There will ALWAYS be new strands of the flu, so there will always be another shot to get. I still don't know if I will give my son the flue shot. Regular shots yes, but flu i'm still undecided. Can't wait to hear what others say.

My family always get our flu shots, the kids since they were infants and me while pregnant. You do NOT get the sick from a flu shot. Your MIL had something else. Occasionally, someone is allergic to a component of the shot, but that is not the same thing. I haven't had the flu since college, when I did not get the shots. My kids never even had a red spot or swelling. Most kids get vaccinated for childhood dieases and so they are harder to catch, although whooping cough and measles are around these days. I actually had ptertusis (whooping cough) since my vaccination wore off with my age. However, fewer people get the flu shot and thus your son is more at risk of catching that than almost anything else. And I wouldn;t wish that on him. Ask your pediatrician for advice on how kids react. But I would never not protect my child if I could.

The times I got the flu shot, (back in the day before I researched vaccines), I always ended up with the flu. Now I have kids and have learned a lot about these things. I choose to boost my children's immune systems naturally and opt out on the shots. Check out Super Immunity for Kids by Dr. Leo Galland...easy, healthy ways to boost immunities thru essential fatty acids in their diet. My toddler is never sick, even her pedi is amazed. Here's a link for the book on Amazon...

My daughter has had the flu shot since she was 8 months old. I have never had any problems with it. I would recommend that you get it. As a matter of fact I called the pedi to make an appointment for her and they told me that it is too early yet. I did pass on the N1H1 for her and myself cause I really didn't know much about it and it is new. My husband got it though and he didn't have any problems. Good Luck

I have never had the flu shot. I did have the flu about 6 years ago; lasted about 3 days; drank lots of fluids and slept - big whoop. I contribute my great immune system on leading a healthy life and letting my immune system do it's work. My daughter is 2 1/2 - I did a lot of research on the H1N1 last year since everyone was making such a big deal of it. Ended up not getting the shot and no one in our family got it. To me if you have a serious health issue and your body doesn't have a chance to fight off something like the flu then sure, go get it the shot. But if you are healthy with a good immune system... well, make it a great immune system by letting your body do what it's supposed to do. My doctor friend...off the record was saying that people need to get sick to build up their immune system and I tend to agree... obviously.

My daughter gets the flu shot because her doctor recommends it and I trust him. I did pass on the H1N1 shot because I feel it is too new.

My son has been getting the shot since he was 1 year. At first, my husband and I didn't get it. We would usually still have at least one round of flu during the year. The last 3 years, we all get the shot and so far we have not had the flu. I know that we still have the chance but, we have been lucky so far. My son even got the nasal mist last year (it is a live vaccine) and he had no problems. I think the H1N1 is going to be one of the three strains in the flu shot this year, but I might be wrong about that.

I always get my kids flu shots and get them myself. My kids are 2 and 4 and have gotten them since infancy. None of us have ever had any side effects or gotten sick.

And I second Nikki G's response. Many get mild cases of the flu and still feel terrible. I had the real, full-on ugly deal about 14 years ago, and it made me understand why the flu kills people. I was a healthy 26 year old, and it almost took me out! Without a doubt, I think a 1 year old who had the flu like I had it (and then it developed into pneumonia, which it can easily do) would be in critical condition. I had rather not chance it!

My daughter got the flu shot two months ago and still has not got the flu. She is a completely healthy and growing little girl. It is up to you and you only whether or not you decide to do it. Everyones reaction to it is different.
