My son is six months old and started eating baby food slowly at about four months. I have fed him carrots twice within the past two weeks. First time he ate carrots I noticed that he developed a rash on his lower back. I first thought that the rash was from his diaper (i had questioned myself that it might have been the carrots but disregarded this thought becuase i could not find anything online about carrot allergies). I was putting cortizone cream on the rash and within a couple days it was not gone but very close to gone. I today fed my son carrots again and when I took him out of the tub to get him ready for bed I noticed that the rash has gotten worse and has even spread from his lower back to the top of his butt and some spots on his shoulders, it is also spreading in the lower back region to the front. Has anyone experienced any allergies to carrots? Am I doing the right thing by putting cortizone cream on the rash?

What can I do next?

Aleisha,

I have a son who is aout to be 8. When he was starting solids I gave him carrots and he developed a rash and did not seem to like them. I tried them 3 times to see and all 3 times he had the same rash and distatse for them. We ditched them for 6 months like the Dr.'s say, and when we tried them again, he was fine.
My advice is to try one more time in a day or so, if the rash gets worse, put the carrots on hold for a while. I was told it may be the acidity of them, not sure what that meant, but all the pros say to check at least 2x before declaring an allergy. Kids can be allergic to a number of things. Just take it one step at a time.
Good luck!
P.S.
You'd never guess my son hated carrots the first few times. They're his favorite veggie now!

I would call your pediatrician right away. Think if there's anything else that's changed, laundry detergent, baby soap or lotion, formula. Has he had shots recently? My daughter had a completely unexplained rash once. She woke up one morning and it was all over her, but was gone by noon and it never came back. I've never heard of a carrot allergy, but you never know - best to tell the Doctor and don't try any new foods until you get it figured out. Good luck!

My son never had an allergy to carrots, but to be sure it's carrots, make sure that's all you give him. And keep everything absolutely, strictly the same. That way you FOR SURE know it's the carrots. Also, are you feeding him for baby food jars, or do you blend things yourself? My pediatrician told me not to blend my own carrots or spinach because there's too many nitrates in it. Baby food makers make carrots speciallu formulated for babies. Just a thought!

Hello,

stop giving your son carrots, call your doctor right away, your child can have an allergy to any thing that is why they have you introduce one food at a time for 5 days at a time. if you keep giving your child the carrots. you could send him in to antifatic(sp) shock, that is scary. I have never heard of allergys to carrots but it could happen or he is alleric to what is in the carrots to perserve them.

I would ask your doctor about putting on the cream, especially since it is a steroid cream. Also get him to the dr esp when the rash is enflammed so the dr can determine if it is the food or maybe his has ecsma or something like that.

I think if the cortizone is clearing it up it's probly ok to put it on. I would call the dr. about it tho.
