"Free" Time to Actually Get Something Accomplished...

Hello out there,

My husband has just left to meet up with his parents with our boys to stay at camp for a few days. In fact, they do not plan to come home until Wednesday afternoon or evening. This means that I am home alone with our cat for THREE DAYS! :D I work full-time so will be leaving for work by 8 and am usually home before 6, will probably take a short nap each night (I'm perpetually exhausted) but I am deciding what I want to see done in my wreck of an apartment.

I am thinking basement, laundry upstairs (it never gets put away), taking some time to go jogging (rather than dragging 75 pounds in a stroller), and actually taking a shower each and every day, more often if I feel like it! I am trying to look at these few days as a lovely gift and was wondering what the rest of you would do. Maybe your answers will inspire me, too. :)

----I'm enjoying your thoughts! I love the idea of going into Victoria's Secret without a stroller and actually trying something on, even if I don't buy anything. I might have to do that! I do actually get a lot of reading in and will while the kids are gone, but when I say my home is a nightmare, I mean it in the most sincere way. I hope to get things tackled today and tomorrow and relax the rest of the time. I might even watch the Lord of the Rings movies while I sort papers in the living room so I can do something fun at the same time.

What can I do next?

RELAX!!!!!!

I would clean the first day just so the house was nice and I didn't have to look at the clutter while I was laying on the couch reading, watching tv, talking on the phone ect....

Get out of the house and go somewhere that you never go anymore because it is not kid friendly.

Have lunch or dinner with a friend..have a complete conversation with out being interrupted.

Oh, I am so jealous!!! I can't wait for my son to get a little older so he and daddy can go off camping and leave me at home. LOL!

Hope you have a wonderful time!

I get time to myself on a semi-regular basis. Usually I do a lot of reading, sit out on the deck with some wine, go to the movies alone, meet a friend or my sister for dinner, do some of the organizing projects at home that I never seem to have time for when I'm busy with work, a teen and a preteen.

Have fun!

Years ago I would have cleaned and cleaned. Then last year after I spent a bunch of years cleaning and cleaning and working I got cancer. Now I would take walks, go swimming, meet friends, read a book, dance in my house naked and have fun! Life is too short to have to clean all the time. And by the way I am doing very well. One year survivor!!! Enjoy your life!
Wear dirt clothes. Febreeze works wonders.

I would take one day to "clean and organize" so I would fell like I did something useful...THEN

I would sleep and sleep some more...I think I would spend a whole day just in bed...sleeping and then eating junk food like a whole box of krispy kreams while watching movies *I* want to watch, wearing my pajamas all day.

The next day I would read all day long...pick a book on my list and read the whole book at once beginning to end. I would read in the tub until I had reheated the water a couple of times and looked like a wrinkled prune. Lounge on the sofa and read...ahhhhh.....I might also go out to eat sushi, because my kids don't like it. And take my book with me to read at the table.

Oh forget the day cleaning...the third day, if money allowed...I would go for a whole spa day at tour local massage school. For 5+ hours they soak, salt, wrap, dip you in mud and paraffin...give your whole body a "facial" and your face too, get a pedicure and it finishes with a 2 hour massage...in the middle they serve you lunch in a dimmly lit room with soft music playing while they rub your feet. I am almost crying just thinking about it...then I would come home all relaxed and smelling good and crawl into bed and sleep some more.

Can I send my kids and husband to meet up with yours??

I would do nothing... no cleaning, no cooking... would wake and sleep when I want, channel surf, have QUIET time every darn day for 3 days... not "rushing" around, eat what I want, let the dishes pile up, go out with friends and not worry about coming home within a certain time frame, just sit and stare into space.... with my own thoughts and no one calling me every 3 seconds to "do" something, I would go cut my hair, get a pedicure....
OMG I would LOVE it!

I would NOT, use the 3 days for cleaning. I would give myself a 'vacation' on that.

Hallelujah and Raise the Jolly Roger!
If I had three days to myself, I would read, read, read and shop, shop, shop! (Of course that would be AFTER everything was straightened out in the house--but that's just me!)

Personally I would head to the library and get a book on my reading list, then to the store for a nice bottle of white. A lounge chair in the garden, or a comfy sofa, one glass of cool white a day and a book uninterrupted by "Mommy!" or "Honey!" are my definition of paradise.
Set yourself a clean-up limit of 2 hours or so though, so you don't waste this opportunity to just hang out and count the stars.

Oooh, if I had three days alone ... I would tackle the closets. I know that we have a lot of clothes that none of us wear any more and could be put to better use by folks in need ... but I never seem to have the time to get to it (maybe because I spend too much time on mamapedia :-). It would make me feel so much lighter to have that out of the way.

I also would arrange our photographs into albums - another un-done task that would make me feel better if I could get around to it!

Finally - just enjoy yourself (and the cat)!

My sister married an awesome man who was older than she and even before they got married, she knew he would be taking off for parts of the year.
She hated it. She cried. She begged me to come stay with her because she couldn't be alone.
I was very supportive, but I told her that she needed to take advantage of her time. The other wives didn't cry about it. They made it their time. They had lunches, had annual yard sales, went and got their nails done. It was all stuff they could do with their hubbies gone and they had learned to look forward to it as opposed to being sad.
Work on projects if you feel inclined to do so, but don't be shy about taking the time for yourself, whatever that means. Get a facial, a massage...do something nice for yourself that you wouldn't be able to do otherwise.
14 years later, my sister looks forward to sporting season because she does have the house to herself and she does what she wants...cleans or not, relaxes and reads, visits with girlfriends.
You don't have to slave while the "men" are gone.
Sure, you miss them, but they get their time and you get yours too.

Best wishes and enjoy your time!

Take a book in a hot bath with a glass or two of wine and some lit candles!! Call some girfriends (or mom or sister) for a lunch out or in!! Take a nap :) Do your nails, pluck eyebrows, dye hair, shave...lol... these are the things i can never find time to do!! Do you have a pool? I would soak all by myself with no splashy kids ;)

Have fun!! I don't think i have ever had that much time without kids and mine are 14, 13, 8 and 6... that is pretty bad! Please forget about the darn housework and enjoy yourself!!! Order in and have a blast!!

I can TOTALLY relate to you! :0) I have 3 kids (11, 8 and 6) and with their crazy schedules at school and after school activities, my house has been in turmoil as well. The times I get my parents to watch them for events my husband and I can attend, we don't have enough time 'home' to do anything. I have 2 doctors appointments this week - Tuesday & Thursday - my parents are taking the 3 kids for the 3 days. Wednesday will be my Tackle the House day... although I feel the same way as you - what can I do for "me" during that time as well. I've already got a few movies picked out.... will watch those while I sort a huge basket of unmatched socks and go through mounds of papers that came home the last week of school. :0) BUT... my kitchen has to be cleaned and the bathroom cleaned and laundry going before hand (my goals)

Anyway... hope you enjoy your days 'off'... take some time for you besides attending to your apartment.... have fun!!!

I had 4 hours this morning to myself for the first time since my youngest was born 3 1/2 years ago. I cleaned the kitchen (including dishes), took a shower (shaved my legs), cleaned out the minivan (because it was smelly), got an oil change (over due), went to the Dollar Store and went to Target. It was the most peaceful morning ever and I enjoyed every minute.
If I had a full 3 days to myself I probably would spend it in bed.
