To freelance can mean to be an independent contractor or consultant doing something that previously you did in a traditional work setting. For instance, I worked for a non-profit managing their database and writing fund appeals. After I had my first daughter, I freelanced and wrote fundraising letters for non-profits that paid me by the hour or by the project. I have been a freelance writer for about 12 years now (currently working on an article about RVing and families).
I got into it by pitching an article about stunt kites (a popular activity on Cape Cod). The editor I sent it to gave me the green light. They liked my style and versatility and I have been writing ever since.
Pitch an idea that you like. Tell them how the article will flow, where you will get your contacts and how the sidebars (break out boxes) will look.

Freelance just means that you don't work for anyone. You find your work, you do your work, and then you find more. Freelance usually comes with an occupation after it, like "freelance photographer" or "freelance graphic artist."
If you love typing, you may want to try medical transcription. My mom used to do it. At least when she did it, doctors would record their notes on a tape recorder, and she'd type them up. I think now you can get training for it, but she didn't do anything like that, so I'm not sure how it works nowadays.
I have done freelance work at home ever since my first son was born. It is basically contract work for a person or company. Some people do billing or book work for offices or even sewing, photography, whatever. I do freelance graphic design and illustration.
For a lot of freelance work you need some sort of experience or schooling. I am not sure what your talents are or what type of education you have but sit down and think about it. You will be amazed at what people will pay for. My girlfriend picks up laundry from people, takes it home, washes it and returns it. So the simplest things can work.
