OK...I'm not 5 but this happened to me a couple of months ago. I just could not hold it and kept going frequently. No pain, just kept having to go. Went to the doctor and it WAS AN INFECTION. Take him to the doctor.
my 5 year old suddenly started needing to pee 4-5 times in the morning, instead of once or maybe twice. it doesn't hurt him or anything, i'm just wondering why so frequent and such a sudden change. do you think it could be a bladder infection or something? it's been going on for a few days now...

It could be an infection. It could also be nerves. Does he go to kindergarten or preschool? Maybe something has happened at school to make him very nervous to go. I know I have a nervous bladder--when I get nervous I have to pee, and I can go 4 or 5 times when I would normally go once at most.
My 5 year old just went through this. He was not sleeping at night because he kept getting up to go pee. We tried to go to the zoo but we just kept bathroom hopping. This went on for weeks. If he was distracted enough he wouldn't have to go. It was so bad and so dramatic I had his urine tested twice. They checked him for everything. Nothing was wrong. The thing that worked, recommended by the doctor, is I didn't let him go more than every 2 hours. He would beg and plead to please use the potty. He was all better in about 2 days.
The doctor did suggest it was possibly constipation, but that was for sure not the issue.
So: Get his urine tested to rule that out - Make sure he isn't constipated - Don't let him pee more than every 2 hours.
M....I would take him to the doctor. By a simple urine test they can tell a lot. Maybe he has sugar diabetes. My husband does, and that's how his started. M. B.
Hi M....never had that prob w/ children before, but do you go with him when he goes? just wonderin, cuz does he really pee all them times , and alot or just a dribble? i don't think bladder infections have to hurt, just make ya feel like you have to go ALL the time. and is it just in the morn? i would watch them things for a day or 2, then maybe check with his Dr. GL :)
It sounds like your child could be constipated and it is putting pressure on his bladder.I would give him some stool softners and see if it improves in a few days if it doesn't I would seek professional assistance from his primary care Dr.
I would also be sure he is eating plenty of grains to help his bowels move freely and lots of water as well. It could be a UTI , but it really sounds more like a constipation issue.
Is it only in the morning or all day? Has he been eating anything different? Some foods and beverages function as diuretics (sp?). It could be related to a growth spurt.
If it's all day it could be a bladder infection but that usually includes a burning sensation. Frequent urination could also be a sign of Diabetes. Don't panic but keep an eye on him... what he eats and drinks... activity levels at different times of day, especially related to food intake.
If it's only in the morning... that's new to me. Frankly it reminds me of my puppy "marking" his territory...;-)... My nephew always had to use the restroom whenever we went somewhere new. I guess he was curious about other restrooms...;-)...
urinary tract infections and bladder infections are much more infrequent in boys than girls, but on cause could be constipation. A child can have daily bm's and still be constipated and the result is pressure on the bladder causing frequent urination. Is it just in the morning, or is it other times of the day?
M.,
I would take him to the doctor because of the sudden change from normal, just to make sure that there is not a physcial issue. Any sudden change in bowl or bladder habits calls for a trip to the doctor just to be safe.
