Frizzy Hair - Rancho Palos Verdes,CA

My 4 year old daughter has beautiful curly hair. The only problem is that it is very frizzy. She has a halo of hair around her head at all times. I'm just wondering if there is something out there that might help with the frizz on a child? I don't really want to put product in her hair, but maybe I'm drying it out by shampooing every day (sometimes every other day)? It's just that she really needs to get her hair washed - she's an active four year old!

Any advice is much appreciated.

my younger son has beautiful curls, but his hair is coarse....like touching steel wool. Water/rain rolls right off his hair! Takes a lot of soaking to actually get it wet at the scalp. :)

As a preschooler, we only shampooed his hair 2x week. & we always made sure it was a shampoo/conditioner combo.

During his early gradeschool years, sometimes he just used shampoo once a week & used conditioner for the 2nd time.

I know this sounds gross, but his hair does much better when it's left alone. He'd wet it down & refluff the curls, & by about 4th grade....the curls came to an end & he kept his hair buzzed. :(

Every single one of us miss his curls!

For your daughter, try skipping to every other day & alternate with conditioner. A humidifier will also help! Curly hair just has to be treated differently, & it takes a while for parents to adjust. Good Luck!

I have naturally curly hair. Sometimes it is in tight little curls all over, and other times it will be wavy on one side with tight curls on the other. Either way, keeping the frizziness at bay is always a battle.

My hair is baby fine in texture, but I have a huge volume of it. My hairdresser always takes more volume out than length off. It only comes to my shoulders. If you saw the floor after my haircut and didn't know how long my hair is you would probably think that I just had about 4 or 5 inches cut off when all she did was take the volume out and trim any split ends. After I let her take the volume out of my hair, I noticed it was much easier to control the frizziness. My son always calls me a lion when I am in need of a haircut. If she has a lot of hair, you might consider having the volume taken out.

I usually wash my hair every other day, unless it is absolutely necessary to wash. I usually use a leave in conditioner, but sometimes I just use baby oil. If you don't want to use adult products then you could try the baby oil. Rub a few drops of baby oil on the palms of your hands, and then gently use your fingers to comb through the hair. A little bit of baby oil does wonders! If your daughter's hair is long, then do it in sections.

Make sure you always use conditioner on her hair when you wash it. Keeping curly hair moisturized is very important in keeping the frizzies under control. Let her hair dry naturally, or use a hairdryer with a diffuser. Don't use regular hair brushes on curly hair. Use a thick toothed brush or pick. And when you do brush it, start at the bottom and work your way up. I have had a straight perm before, and it is so much easier to take care of straight hair. But curly hair doesn't need to be intimidating, it just takes some getting used to on how to care for it.

I feel your pain. You are describing me! Lots of conditioner. Other than that...... sorry, but product is the only thing I have found that helps. There are some very light oils that could help tame those unruly curls.

Good luck!

Im assuming your daughter is biracial? If she is DONOT wash it everyday. Wash it no more than once a week. You have to use some kind of moisturizer on it everyday. It will be more manageable and bring out the beautiful curls in her hair.

it really depends on her hair. like someone said, biracial children can have thick curly, frizzy hair. i myself have (caucasian) sort of middle-of-the-road, very wavy-to-curly hair that tends to frizz. my niece has very fine, limp, bright red hair, that is constantly frizzy AND looking dirty/oily. for my hair i quit using conditioner after i started using garnier fructis body boost, together with tressame flawless curls mousse. the mousse is SO moisturizing i don't need a conditioner, it makes my hair limp and i lose curl. it is really subjective as to her hair. i'm like you and don't like to use a lot of product on my child's hair. have you thought of a shorter cut? i know a lot of moms don't like that on little girls but they can be really cute.

I use Aphogee Gloss Therapy in my hair to cut frizz. I buy it at Sally's.

My daughter has always had curly hair that tends to be very dry. Aveda Dry Remedy shampoo and conditioner are wonderful. I also like Carol's Daughter Monoi Oil shampoo and conditioner (from Ulta or Sephora). You can also use a little coconut oil as an intensive conditioning treatment. Slather it on an hour before bathtime, then wash her hair as usual. For daytime, we use Beyond the Zone's Split Mender (leave-in conditioner) - you can get it at Sally Beauty Supply (purple bottle).

For sure washing it every day is not necessary unless your daughter is literally rolling in mud. Just rinse off her hair if needed (I do understand getting pieces of the bark chips in the hair at preschool... been there, done that! ;)

I have straight hair, but I use "It's a 10 Miracle Leave In Product". I've noticed that most of the reviewers for it say it's done wonders for their curly hair. It's a little expensive, but a 10 oz. bottle lasts me at least 6 months.

I have naturally curly hair and have been experimenting with the curly girl method. I have noticed a huge difference in my hair. Might be worth a try. There's lots of info about it online.
