Fun Things to Do on Halloween with 14 Month Old?

Hi Moms,

I'm looking for something fun to do with my 14 month old little guy on Halloween. I'm not looking to trick-or-treat (seriously doubt he gets the concept), so I'm looking to see if any of you know of anything fun at the malls or libraries, or other events geared for wee little ones? Googling keeps bringing me links for baby costumes, not baby related events for Halloween. So, if anyone knows of anything in the Oak Brook/Schaumburg/Bloomingdale areas, I'd sure appreciate any and all FYIs.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I work at the Bloomingdale Park District so maybe I'm biased, but we have an awesome Halloween event.

I worked it last year and we had a blast! It will be a little different this year because the big gym is being redone after the recent flood, but it should still be great. My nephew was about that age last year, and he loved it too.

Check out borders. They are having some kind of Halloween thing, reading books or something. I have not had time to check it myself. Also check the local library. Also check out the City of Chicago site for Chicagoween. they have preformances every night and will have one at 5 on the 31st. cityofchicago.org

Here's a link to "Boo at the Zoo" - Brookfield Zoo.

Some things may be a bit over his head, but what kid of any age doesn't like the zoo?! Hope it's good weather...

Schaumburg has a Haloween Boonanza from 6:00-9:00pm. "The CRC and Safety Park (off of Bode and Springinsguth) will be turned into a Halloween carnival atmosphere with a variety of themed activities. Activities include hay rides, prizes, candy, crafts, trick-or-treating, goblin games, entertainment and moonwalk.

Pre-registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Fee is $5 for youth if you pre-register. The fee is $7 for youth if you buy on the day of the event. Youth receive a wristband that includes all activities except concessions. Parents and children under 1 are free."

I took the description from the Schaumburg Park District website. We haven't been yet but have heard it's a blast for ALL ages.

Try you local Boarders store in your area. I know the one in Oak Park and Oak Brook has things going on for all ages but geared for little ones. I think they even start this weekend.

I took my 10 month old trick or treating last year and he totally enjoyed it. We just went, literally, around the block; hit a handfull of houses and got just a little more than a handfull of candy (people wanted to give more but I told them just one piece please!). He enjoyed holding out his little bucket and jiggling the candy in it. When we got home he just played with the treats. Then he got to see a few kids knock on our door before he went to sleep. I wouldn't rule it out for your 14 month old. Go with a small group of kids if you can.

Otherwise, your local park districts should be hosting some festivities.

I know Stratford mall has a halloween parade and show on Tuesday and Thursday. The Brookfield Zoo has Boo at the Zoo. Those are the two I know about, but I'm sure other malls also have things going on!

Give your park districk office a call. They'll have a list of all the festivities for all ages. Most townships celebrate the Halloween week and weekend. Have fun

Call your public Library and /or your local town hall. They often run events for children whose parents either don't trust the old Halloween tradition of trick or treating, Or like the idea of a safe party for thier kids. They are often free too. I have seen that the Museum of Science and Industry is doing cool things for Halloween and the Brookfield Zoo usually does too.

I would definitely suggest checking with your local library. They usually have special story times. Also check with your park district. They usually have family friendly parties. Your little guy may not be able to participate in all the activities but they may have a few things for him to do. It can't hurt to call them and ask if any part of their Halloween programs are geared towards your son's age group. And when you get there, look around for other moms with young kids. They might know of even more stuff to do.
