Gas Grills

Hi, As with anything you buy, quality and cost go together. One thing people forget to check out is the weight of the grill itself. The lower the cost the lighter the unit and more suseptible (sp)to being blown over in the wind. My daughter learned this the hard way. So having paid $200 for this grill a new one just made it more expensive to replace.

Go to BBQ Galore in Plano and educate yourself as to all the features available and what to look for. They are very knowledgeable. then you can make an educated purchase. Stick with Weber, Ducane (we had one that lasted over 10 years with minor part replacements. Another fact is that while Lowes and HD have these brand names, to get the price down, cheaper parts are used to get the cost down. Good luck, Nana

We have had two gas grills. I do not remember the brand of the first. I do remember that it was impossible to find replacement parts when something broke. Our second is a Char-Broil. My husband bought it at Lowes. Don't remember the price, but it has been wonderful. And we know that if anything breaks, we can easily find parts.

I just bought a 4-burner one at Home Depot for $150--most are around $200 from all the ads I checked-depends on how fancy you want it.

I would suggest buying the absolute BEST you can possible afford. We have a new Ducane which is a great brand. We paid about $800 but you can get them more reasonably priced.

So many of the grills have a lot of bells and whistles (sizzle). When we shop, we look for the steak without all the "sizzle" We go for top quality. We don't feel as though we need all the sizzle. Some sizzle is nice, we just choose what works best for us.

I also say to have a spare tank. That way you don't run out of gas. I did not check to see where you live BUT, you can buy a tank for $30 or so and not do the switch out. We go to Thurstons located at Parker and 75 and get our tank filled up for less than $12. You pay more when you switch them out PLUS, you do not have YOUR tank. We know how we take care of our things and some people are not as picky as we are about that so we bought 2 tanks and keep both full.

I would stick with higher quality stores for shopping and someone who will back up the product if you have issues. Lowes is pretty good, Home Depot used to be better but the quality there is lacking. I would certainly steer away from Wally World. They always have the cheapeast quality.

The grills that Sam's sells, Members Mark, are good. We've got a really nice one that we love.

We just bought our first one. We went to Lowe's and got the one they have for $199. We also had a budget for $300 but you have to buy the propane and the cover and the tools. This will eat up the other $100. I LOVE my grill. I have used it many times and it holds alot of food. It also has a side burner.

You can shop anywhere to compare prices, but look for 2 things in particular: the actual grill cooking surface must be porcelan coated cast iron, otherwise it burns up in a couple of years of steady use; and, the drip guard and burner need to be porcelan coated cast iron. Cast iron internal parts are very important to get lasting value from your purchase. Other thoughts: the side burners are cute and usually add a lot of money to the purchase price, or, are cheap and put there to take your attention off of the lighweight and inferior internal parts. Anyway, I've found that they are basically worthless, go for the side shelves instead. After many years of grilling, I have found that we never use the side burner, we cook side dishes in the kitchen, but the shelves are very handy or you can just set up your own side table beside the grill. Additionaly, check for the easy availability of replacement internal parts. We use the same basic grill for 8-10 years before the bottom burns out, but the burner and drip guard must be replaced occasionally, usually around $30-$60 for replacement parts. You know they are ready for cleaning and/or replacement when you no longer get a steady, even flame. A tip: purchase two tanks, that way you never get caught halfway through a cook-out and run out of gas. We have found that the campground in Lewisville (on I-35E) is a good place to fill the tanks, it's usually cheaper than an exchange system via a local store and you always know that you have your good tanks because they get inspected at the campground filling station at each fill up. There is also a propane place in Justin that fills and inpects the tanks. Always check your grill for gas leaks at all of the connectors before and after each use; remove all interior parts and scrape/clean the burner and drip guard as well as the inside surface of the grill after a year of heavy use, this prevents grill fires that can ruin a party and be potentially dangerous. FYI:

Do not buy a Brinkman. We had one that wasn't very old and 2 burners went out and we also needed a heat shield and something else ( my husband takes care of all that ) anyway, he couldn't find all the parts we needed on their website and he tried to call them. He called and called and called....never could get ahold of anyone. Finally I found a different phone number and he got a "live" person...the parts he needed were on back order for 6-8 weeks...the summer would be over before we MIGHT ever get them. We decided to just buy a new grill. We use one all the time and also have pool parties and we needed it.We ended up getting a different one at Walmart and my husband loves it.
