My son is 10 weeks old and he strugles a LOT with gas and "no2". I've tried gripe water and Mylicon... and nothing really helps. I even got from a friend a special organic tea mixture that I mix with the milk and that also doesn't work. I don't know hat to do anymore... I nurse and also do the the formula. Please help!!! Any advice is priceless for me!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I would try stopping the formula and just going with nursing if at all possible. I believe the formula is a bit constipating. Also try eliminating dairy from your diet and see if that helps him. Remember it takes a few weeks to get all the traces out. A breastfeeding friend had daughters who were affected when she ate onions/garlic (for what it's worth--something else to try)

I too would recommend talking to La Leche League folks-- you might get some good advice from moms there too, even though gas isn't strictly a breastfeeding issue.

Sometimes a warm bath relaxes a baby and then he'll poop; maybe combie with other things like belly rubs, pedaling the legs, etc.

Good luck!

Hi A.---The first thing you need to do is practice an elimination diet for yourself. There is likely something that you are eating that is irritating your babies immature digestive system.

It seems counterintuitive, as cows milk is touted as a healthy food, but it is one of the most allergenic substances that humans ingest. Cows milk was designed to make baby cows get big quickly. It is NOT meant for humans to drink. Please go to www.strongbones.org and www.pcrm.org to learn more. So, stop drinking milk. Then, start eliminating foods one by one to see how they affect your baby. Keep a food journal. It will take some time, but there are some foods that are more likely culprits than others. Feel free to contact me and we can talk about those foods.

The formula is another likely candidate. A pediatrician I work with offered the elimination diet AND the need for predigested formula for babies with lots of gas a reflux. Predigested formula does cost more, but in my humble opinion, the health of your baby is worth it.

DO NOT use those meds used to block the production of stomach acid. We need stomach acid for proper digestion and absorption of foods. It is far better for health to take the time and figure out what is causing the problem and then eliminate it from the diet. Be patient and this will soon pass.

Good luck. I know it's hard (my first was a very gassy baby...didn't think it would ever end) but know that you are doing something to help and that you will all get through this.

In health, D.

Both my kids were the same way. I tried all of the suggestions below but the one thing that really worked was time. Around 12 weeks they both got over it. Maybe their little bellies just need to mature a bit more? Hang in there

If he's 10 wks old and you're not breasfeeding him, he might be allergic to the regular formuls you're giving him. He could be lactose intolerant. I don't know what type of milk you're giving your baby but when my son was gassy and cried also. I switched from Advance Similac to the Similac Sensitive for sensitive tummies of couse and he got better! You may have to try also the one I think something 'Soy', which we also tried. It helped him also but he really did't like it so thats why we stuck to the Sensitive one. Lots of babies get very colicky and gassy. If you're breasfeeding, it's could be the cow's milk you're drinking or something that produces gas, you'll need to find out what you're eating that's gassy and that makes him gassy, poor baby!! :(
But babies that small cannot tolerate cow's milk, their digestive system isn't ready for it at all! Until they are one yrs old. I really hope your baby gets better soon!!

We switched to Gentlease Enfamil formula and that seemed to work. Try mixing the formula with Gripe Water. We used Little Tummies gas drops but not sure if they worked or not. Good luck!

Some formulas can be constipating, so maybe a formula change is in order. Ask your doctor if the baby is too young for diluted prune juice maybe once a day. Check first with your doc!! Good luck!!

have you talked to your OWN Pediatrician? people can offer suggestions but doctors know you. some peds say that it is not a milk issue if there are no other symptoms. can you only give your baby breatmilk? it is the most easily digested food for babies, naturally. otherwise, time. my baby is 9 months, exclusively breastfed (can't imagine the issues he would have otherwise!) and is just barely starting to grow out of the stomach issues.

Could be a bunch of issues-

lactose intolerance
gulping air when feeding
etc

I might suggest trying aventi bottles- and checking in with your local laleche league international group- llli.org

If he's having problems pooping- I might suggest 1oz of watered down prune juice (if your doc says OK), and lots of belly rubs, "pedaling" his feet, and back-patting..... You might also want to make sure you are using "Gentle Ease" formula to help with the gas- and have your peditrician evaluate your son for GERD/reflux.....

I saw someone else recommending taking cow's milk from your diet and wanted to second the idea. Both my kids had trouble digesting the protein in cow's milk. So when I was nursing, I couldn't have milk or soft cheeses (hard cheeses and natural yogurts didn't bother me).
If that's the problem, it is something they'll grow out of. At five and two, both my kids now drink milk and digest it just fine.
It may seem extreme, but give it a try.

Our baby had the same problem. We tried a lot of different things, including some ideas from our pediatrician: lay the baby on their back, hold their feet, and bend their knees up toward their chest to put gentle pressure on the abdomen; do the football hold--hold them tummy down with your hand between their legs and head in the bend of your elbow; rub their abdomen in a clockwise motion; and try putting them in a vibrating chair. Good luck!

Well, I would say that maybe your formula isn't agreeing with him. All my boys were really gasy on regular formula, I had to switch them to sensitive. (even though they aren't lactose intolerant or anything) That seemed to help alot!

Hope this helps! Good luck! :D

I read this online and it worked wonders for my gassy baby.

Hold the baby with its stomach on your upper stomach. Hold firm and close. Then if you can hold a pacifier in its mouth to keep it sucking is good, but don't suffocate. Then rock in a rocking chair/glider chair briskly. The pressure of your stomach on hers/his with the rocking motion is soothing. The pacifier takes the attention away from crying and sucking is also soothing.

This worked great for me and my daughter was asleep within 10 mins and I could relax. I know a screaming baby can wear on your nerves. Have patience and good luck.
