My 3 month old has this and she seems to having a difficult time with it even with the medicine. Do any other mothers know any tips for this? She sleeps in her bouncy and I keep her propped up at all times, but she still goes in these screaming fits and when they start it is very hard to stop them. Any advice will be well appreciated!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you both! Yes she is on Zantac and Bethanechol right now and I just have to keep uping the dose, she is fine for a few days but then has problems again. My docotor said she can't use Prilosec until she gets a little older but I really want to try it.

Look into cranio-sacral massage therapy. It's extremely gentle, and totally safe for tiny babies. My 3rd child got his first session at just 4 days old...just to be on the safe side after I saw what a difference this therapy made for my oldest. www.kenpiercy.com is the guy I see. There is a national provider directory at www.upledger.com but it's best to see someone with "CST-D" certification (the most advanced training and lots of experience). If it doesn't make a big difference after the first session, then keep looking for other solutions. This either works like magic, or doesn't really help at all. It's worth a try.

Good luck,

Have you tried more than one medication? My daughter tried Zantac and it didn't work but Prilosec really helped. Hang in there, it's so hard when they're hurting and we feel like we can't help.

You can also find a compounding pharmacy, that will customize the Omeprazole into solution or Suspension for your little one, and they can provide you with some really neat delivery devices, they even have binkies you can put the medicine in.

I agree with Sue. Trying another med might help. Mine was the opposite as Sue. Zantac helped where Prilosec did not. Also have you ever heard of a Tucker sling? You might find it helpful as we did. Really helps them to sleep.
http://tuckersling.com/ They have both slings for the wedge and the crib. We got one for the crib and worked great for our son.
I feel for you and I'm sorry that this is happening to you and your baby. It's one of the hardest things I had to do in my life before we got the right diagnosis and medicine.
Best Regards,
C.

Isn't Mamasource great. You have gotten some wonderful moms to comment on how things went for them during this struggle. If you are still breast feeding I would try an elimination diet for yourself to see how this can help her. I would also recommend that you add a probiotic to your diet. If you aren't breast feeding then you can add the probiotic to her milk. I can recommend a very good one to you. More than likely the bacteria in her gut is out of balance and this can help to ease her discomfort. Too much bad bacteria and it effects how we breakdown and absorb our food and it also effects our immune system. I hope this helps.

Both my son and daughter took Prevacid for their reflux from the time they were a couple months until about 12 months. It definitely helped with the pain but not with the spitting up. The GI pediatrician we saw said that Prevacid was the best one at the time, and that was in '08.

I also recently started both of my kiddos on a supplement which has greatly strengthened their immune systems and helped their allergies. It has also helped me with allergies and headaches. I wish I had known about it when they were newborns with GERD because I have heard stories of babies who were helped with that issue using the supplement. Message me if you'd like more info on it. Good luck to you and your little one. I know how difficult this is!!! God bless.

It seems that more and more babies are being diagnosed with GERD, most of them are on medicine for it, and it doesn't really work. Babies spit up, it just happens. A muscle in their esophagus isn't fully developed yet. It is natural. Now the stomach pains (colic maybe?), that is hard to take. My son was diagnosed with GERD, but I didn't believe it because he had no problems with breast milk. When we gave him formula he was miserable. How could it be acid coming up his throat when it only happened with formula? We did extensive research and this is what we came up with:

***If she is formula fed do not give her the formula with the DHEA in it. I may have the wrong initials, but it is the oils to help with brain development. The problem with them is during the processing a chemical is used that binds with them and causes stomach pains in babies. If you are concerned with brain development, I would use a formula without DHEA and put good quality fish oil in my son's milk. Carlson brand consistently tests clear of heavy metals.

***She may have a problem with milk, either from you drinking it and it gets into her breast milk or her formula. After trying 5 different formulas the one that worked with us was Baby's Only Toddler Formula Lactose free. We also used goat's milk.

***There are a lot of other things in breast milk that babies react to. Onions are one, but do an internet search and find other things that may react poorly with baby. Try eliminating them from your diet one by one.

***For immediate relief, Mylicon worked for us. Hyland's colic tabs worked sometimes, you just have to give it a few minutes. Gripe water worked well.

***We put towels under half of his mattress so it slanted. Another trick is to place books under 2 legs of the crib to make a slant. Then put those foam stabilizers on either side under the arms so baby doesn't roll down.

*** The best advice we had when he wouldn't stop crying was this: sit in a rocking chair with baby facing out. Firmly rub your hands, one after another, from the bottom of her ribcage to the top of her pubic bone 15 times. Count out loud, it soothes the baby. Then bring her legs up to her tummy for a count of 15. Then rub her tummy clockwise (don't go the other way or the gas "backs up") for a count of 15. Bring her legs up again for 15. Repeat until she calms down. It usually didn't take more that three times and my son was happy.

***This doesn't sound like your problem, but I'll mention it just in case. My niece had colic really bad. My sister tried everything. When she took her for Craniaosacral therapy the crying stopped almost immediately. It only took two treatments and she never had a problem again.

Hope something here helps.

I suggest that you add a little sea salt to her bottles, or you can take it and she will get it in the breast milk if you nurse. It sounds crazy, but my daughter suffered from acid reflux beginning at 2 weeks...I took her to Dr. Chalmers in Frisco, TX and this was his solution. It worked within 24 hours. She has not had additional issues since. The sea salt you use makes a difference...I use the salt I got at Dr. Chalmers...Premier Pink Salt.
